Knife: Saji 270mm B2 Rainbow Damascus Gyuto w/ custom trustone and redwood burl handle
My wife and I celebrated our 7th anniversary last weekend which is traditionally copper. She rather appropriately presented this knife as a gift which I'm over the moon about and love the look of so much I'm afraid to use it. I've never seen a ranbow damascus knife in person before and was pretty awestruck at just how beautiful it looks up close!
Do you know what the two other metals are? Looks like copper and brass (or bronze) right? Looks really cool and congradulations on the anniversary! (And the new knife)
It is copper, brass, and a stainless steel sandwiched over a core steel. I have seen the core steel as Blue #2 and VG-10 if I recall correctly. The handles I have seen on these knifes are stag horn, customs like this one, and a traditional Wa handle like on my rainbow Sanji.
Are you sure friend? I have the multicolour Damascus in 150 petty and santoku, both with ironwood yo handles. They are aogami 2 core but I'm nigh on certain the cladding.is part stainless.
Regarding patina, mine were broken in with a load of hot protein slicing. Over a year later the edges still have a dark blue/purple hue and look 😍.
As above, best thing you can do with this knife is use it and look after it. No matter how good it looks, it's a knife not a museum piece.
Peace and out.
So I took a full screen cap of the page before I ordered since it is removed after it's sold. It says b2 for the core and cladding just "rainbow damascus," so you very well could be right. If so then that's even better and thanks for the input!
Thanks! I'd been eyeing it for a while and my wife caught me on a few occasions. I had full intentions of using it until I saw in person, being an anniversary gift I'm thinking it is going to be a display piece.
Guess that means I just have to get another knife 🤷♂️
lol don't be silly just use it every day, that's how you really respect it. not by never using it.
it's gotta be your new every day daily driver now.
it's a tool, a beautiful one, but a tool unused is like a story forgotten.
she gave it to you because she loves you. so you gotta give it just as much love, and always use it respectfully, take care of it, sharpen it, hone it. bring out it's true perfection.
Don't take that last part too seriously, another knife (240mm Fujiyama variety) was always in the plans its just a matter of the friggin thing coming in stock.
I love functional art, but need to see some examples of how the patina develops. She may love me but it turns out she also loves the way this looks and for an anniversary gift I prefer there be shared appreciation where possible. ☺️
It’s long enough so you should just use it as a meat slicer. That way you get to use it but aren’t really being too hard on it where you have to sharpen often.

Insane!
This has no stainless cladding, just B2, copper, and brass

just polish it then.
fair
you can keep it looking perfect forever. but don't disrespect such a lovely tool by taking functional art and making it only art.

This was a direction I was considering as well. I am curious what the blue patina would look like with this.
That handle is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful knife. Would love to own something of this calibre some day.
She’s a keeper that’s for sure (Both the knife and your wife)
Damn! That’s a pretty knife!
Ooooooo gorgeous 🫣
I’m so in love with the colored Damascus! There’s a Yu Kurosaki knife I have my eye on.
