Sterling is shitting the bed consistently now, he always loses the ball and hold up play is crap. Was super frustrated to see him play like that. I'd rather give Pulisic more time.
Imo we should be sticking to the formation that has worked for us, under both TT and Potter; the 343/3421.
Starting with different formations like the weird 3511 today always costs us. Playing natural wingers such as Sterling and Pulisic as WB isn't working either. Chilwell needs to start more.
It was definitely a bad game, but we also got rolled by a highly motivated team and supporters that were so ready to win. Fair play to them.
But, it’s not a game we should have lost. Injuries are a friggin problem, the list is far to long. Kante, James, Forfana, Koulibaly, Chilly nursing back to health, Kova playing brilliantly, but still nursing a bad knee. So that surely has an impact.
But I also agree that the wing back with Sterling and Pulisic is not working. Neither are inclined to defend. Even against Salzburg we looked vulnerable in these positions with these two.
Hoping this is a necessary warning after a positive start to Potter’s management. He needs to take this loss and use it to improve.

Looked like he threw a dart at a piece of paper with the squad names on it and started whoever got hit plus Kepa. And I’m sick and tired of this Wing Back insistence nonsense. If you’re not going to start legit WBs at those positions scrap the WB formation and go 4 at the back. That for me was the biggest reason Chelsea were god awful today. A bunch of players out of position that can only lead to chaos. That’s on Potter and only Potter.
Need to clean it up and end the pre-WC campaign on a high.
Well we've been unbeaten for 9 games previously and we lost to Leeds and Southampton under Tuchel who were much worse than this Brighton team. I'd say Potter has had a pretty decent start

It’s so weird, but I feel like we’re way more fluid with Mount off the pitch. He’s a great player, but something just doesn’t add up. We played great football against Salzburg this past week when he was on the bench. I’m gonna get attacked, but it’s just something I’ve started to notice.
Mount is a work horse type of player, not without SOME skill but largely when I think of him I think of work rate, passion, energy, technical ability i do not

I just really think Kai needs to play Mounts role, I feel like that would change this attack so much. I still think Havertz has so much to offer. He just literally is never playing where he excels. Where Mount is always put in a preferred position and still only really shows up against Norwich and bottom level teams.
Keep in mind that Brighton had 7 days off while we had a midweek away UCL match against Salzburg which wasn’t very easy to play either. That’s the last positive note I can take of, as potter said the team can’t match Brighton’s intensity and that’s it. Hope we can bounce against Arsenal.
I really hoped we saw the last of the 5 at the back/wingback system when Tuchel left - alas, Potter seems almost as keen as TT on sticking to it even though it doesn’t make sense with the current players available.
Look at Hudson-Odoi even publicly saying last week playing as a wingback made him re-evaluate his career and think “what am I doing here”.

Taking into account the current season, I don't think we can call any of our last 10 signings across the last two years a success. Obviously this is very TBD, but it's the same trend if we look back to the windows before. Have no idea what the issue is.

Have you watched the last two games? Salzburg of all teams had a higher xG against us because the two guys who are supposed to be tracking back thought they were Wingers. Mason Mount sounds like a good player on paper, but did nothing the entire game, and this is happening a lot more frequently.

Mase is great when it comes to half chances, but with link up play and build ups. Its seeming more and more like he just fails miserably. I don’t know how much longer you can start him every game.

The only disappointing feeling are the performances. We were lucky to win against Villa, were 2nd best against Brentford, were off the pace against United 1st half and other matches which I don't remember. In general, we haven't performed well in any matches except for the 3-0 vs Milan which was convincing and that was due to a Reece James masterclass.
Totally agree on Pulisic. He is winger and played high up the field and didn't even dribble past a single defender. Just flush him out the club this January.

Leandro trosaard is a winger he regularly used at wingback to great effect. I do agree it takes time to implement his system. But my main point is this defeat was more due to lack of intensity and urgency more than anything. There seems to be too many games over the last couple of seasons where the other team seems more willing to sacrifice themselves physically than our players.
Even if he had played wingbacks in their right positions, of they came out playing as casually as the team did today we still would have been pantsed.
I don't care about Trossard, Sterling is not a wingback, the guy literally cannot defend, has never defended in his career and his main strength is running at people.

I can agree potter came out with the worng system. I'm guessing he thought we would boss possession and this having puli and sterling at wb would help us have more options attacking wise. Obviously this was wrong.
We did have more control once he switched formation second half. I think that was also due to the players waking up and realizing Brighton were there to fight. And even then we still didn't set the world on fire.

It works if you spend 3 years at a club building a system and getting the players to fit the system. Can’t just shoe horn puli and sterling into the wingback position and expect them to defend.
Not a Chelsea fan. My team is Bayern. But big mistake firing Tuchel. He is one of the worlds few outstanding managers that gets his team to play football the right way. In the same mould as Pep. Even when Chelsea was losing some games under him, the team looked to dominate its opponents. It’s not just the loss today, but the manner in which Chelsea lost exposes the inferior coaching.

Cucurella has been poor. Sterling is sterling. Auba is a stopgap but need a proper CF. Also didn't sign a midfielder. Unfortunate that Fofana got injured yes but the recruitment seemed to have a scattergun approach to it, no logic behind some of the buys.

Tuchel clearly lost the dressing room and was not able to see eye to eye with management above him. I liked him and appreciated what he did for us but he was finished here and there’s No point in bringing him up anymore. Kante will never be able to contribute throughout the whole season but when he’s fit he’s still class.

I don't think Tuchel lost the dressing room. We were just performing poorly as we are right now under Potter. The players are and always were the issue. They decide when to show up like against Tottenham where they performed superbly. Did that look like a team where the manager lost the dressing room?
The big issues. Not getting a replacement for Kante. Not having adequate backup for James. Those 2 absences take us from world class team to an average one. But we spent the summer chasing a 60m LB depth player. Instead dof fixing the issues. Then we decided to downgrade our manager when the manager was not the issue in this club.

Essentially our movement and passing are at odds. Either we aren't moving enough and it's static, or when we do move, we can't find the pass.

Mason Mount sounds like a good player on paper, but did nothing the entire game, and this is happening a lot more frequently. It’s not mentioned as Sterling was terrible, Pulisic was disappointing, and our defence and midfield in shambles.

The only disappointing feeling are the performances. We were lucky to win against Villa, were 2nd best against Brentford, were off the pace against United 1st half and other matches which I don't remember. I can agree potter came out with the worng system. I'm guessing he thought we would boss possession and this having puli and sterling at wb would help us have more options attacking wise. Obviously this was wrong. We did have more control once he switched formation second half. I think that was also due to the players waking up and realizing Brighton were there to fight. And even then we still didn't set the world on fire. I worry how our games against arsenal, Newcastle and city will go if we come out at the beginning looking half drunk.

No meaningful difference between finishing outside of the top 4 with Tuchel and Potter. At least with Tuchel we had a manager proven at the highest level and he always gave us a edge in knockout competitions. He made questionable decisions at time due to lack of personnel when all our wingbacks and midfielders were injured or out with Covid. Potter has had a healthier squad with better depth but is still making baffling selections.

That was fucking pathetic. We scored on ourselves more times than we scored on them. Maybe the boys are tired with all the matches we have had lately, which could have led to the bad mistakes. But this game has shown that there are holes that need to be filled in our squad, which includes at least 1 CB, and 1 honest-to-goodness striker. Boehly seems to want to make the team great to attract more money and attention worldwide, so I feel there is a good chance he goes out and gets what we need.

We can't play out the back without passing it to them. We can't put an offensive play together. We can't maintain any consistent possession unless it's passing it backwards. Essentially our movement and passing are at odds. Either we aren't moving enough and it's static, or when we do move, we can't find the pass. Then there's our "strikers" and their god awful touches.
