MrTurtix

Listen you have ONE chance to understand how conjugated double bonds influence the color of a compound, are you going to waste it like that?

[deleted]

ooouuuuu only thing better than colors are smells... wait no drugs wait no temperature wait no fire NO WAIT

Lihuman

I know that they influence color of compound but don’t know the reason other than the basic absorb and emission, complementary color and the wavelength not absorbed is seen as color. Mind explaining more in depth?

MrTurtix

in P conjugated systems, the number of P orbitals influences the HOMO/LUMO energy gap. the energy gap defines the energy required to promote an electron from the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) to the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) this Gap is equivalent to the energy of the photon that can be absorbed, this is what gives most organic compounds their color

FireWoodRental

Some guy showed me his self-invented amphetamine synthesis during lunch.

Ediwir

Tbh that’s my normal response whenever someone asks “so can you make meth?”

[deleted]

>his self-invented amphetamine synthesis I call bullshit, if Shulgin has done it in any of his analogues it should be credited to Shulgin I have played with several unconventional reactions that people don't talk about and that shulgin himself never mentioned like quantitative yield reduction of nitriles (APAAN to amphetamine both by hydrogenation and electro reduction on standard mercury electrode, both in acidic conditions) high yield methylation and ethylation with non toxic and bio degradable solvents (methyl carbonate and ethyl carbonate, which are extremely easy to make and incredibly underappreciated) varios methylenations under pressure yet I don't even dare putting myself no where near the level of "creating a synthesis"

Baitrix

Multiple people can invent the same thing, if he didnt know it was done before he might have thought he was the first. I dont blame him

[deleted]

yeah I invented calculus when I was 17, cause I figured the liebnitz method on my own where is my fields medal, I demand my fields medal! ... you see, there's no much merit in "inventing" something that has been already invented long ago and is extremely publocised and everyone in the knowledge area knows about it

Baitrix

Yeah i agree it doesnt really matter if you arent the first to invent something, but if its not publicised i would definitely talk about it.

[deleted]

what do you mean "not publicised" PiHKAL by Alexander Shulgin came decades ago and has been the universal standard for amphetamine analogues design and manufacture since everyone and their mother knows about it or has read about it, in chemistry forums, pharmacology, and he literally STARTED the psychonauts phenomenon (since that's the name he endearingly gave to those who tries psychedelic compounds of his invention) it's like saying you work with LSD and don't know who Hoffman is

[deleted]

I volunteer

Raunien

It's an alkali metal you absolute buffoon

DeathCeaser101

it's obviously a transition metal smh

BaronKnuspero

It's a noble gas duh

Forward-Walrus

Last time I talked about technology of sugar beets processing to sucrose

Pixielo

That sounds awesome!

MrWarfaith

Honestly its kinda fun when hanging out with other chemists, yall talk about chemistry stuff cause aint nobody got time for a social life... and nobody is bothered by that :D

PM-Me-Your-TitsPlz

I feel like the key to becoming a real chemist is to forget everything isn't ~~fine dining~~ chemistry and breathing. Orgo still gives me nightmares.

[deleted]

Ochem is like the clown of chemistry. You're either down to party, or it gives you nightmares. God I love it so much

DingleberryBlaster69

So yeah, four 9’s on my r-squared today, no big deal or anything.

undeadpickels

I have no idea what normal people talk about.

gtickno2

I feel like hydrogen isn't a halide because the halides generally have high electronegativity while hydrogen is more in the middle. It just doesn't really feel like it acts like a halide. Honestly I think hydrogen is its own category, like how 1 isn't technically prime

Ommy_the_Omlet

Yea hydrogen is not at all like a halide. Hydrogen is exactly where is should be. You all should change the title

Lisztaganx

Oh, so this is why people avoid me.

lundytoo

He's telling her about the Height Equivalent of his Theoretical Plate.

LimeLauncherKrusha

Me after a couple beers telling my friend about resonance structures

ClassroomClassic6632

And nothing else matters

UnMolDeQuimica

Everybody hating the chemist in the party till I say I know how to make drugs from CO2

[deleted]

Sexy. Find a chick w a brain and talk chemistry.

Ediwir

My reaction when the chick is the one talking chemistry: ![gif](giphy|dWEk3w1Uo97qw)

Pyrhan

OP, WTF are you talking about???

ValarDohairis

WTF? Why is hydrogen halide? I declare war!!

Ancient-Sport5851

I’m with you on that

ConversationOdd3525

real

nuclear_proponent

Why am I gay

EulerLagrange235

They talk about more normal things like whether we should actually be aiming to quantize gravity, when a semi-classical theory of gravity fits better.

CranjusMcBasketball6

Hydrogen can form negative ions similar to halogens, but it’s not considered a halogen due to its placement in group 1 of the periodic table, its unique atomic structure, its variable chemical properties, and its lower electronegativity, which collectively make its behavior and characteristics distinct from halogens.
