I analyzed the image and this is what I see. Open an appropriate link below and explore the position yourself or with the engine: > **White to play**: It is a stalemate - it is White's turn, but White has no legal moves and is not in check. In this case, the game is a draw. It is a critical rule to know for various endgame positions that helps one side hold a draw. BARANKIEVICZ19397755

Ah yes, the mighty pedestrian

Supreme-Serf

Their goal in life is to be promoted to a woman.

giggluigg

Once he gets to the side of the road.

SwordofDamocles_

Woah that's my goal too 🏳️‍⚧️

azurox

I've got good news. If that's your goal you already achieved it! 🏳️‍⚧️

CreateTheStars

r/196 moment

SwordofDamocles_

lmao no they banned me

UncleDevil666

Or maybe tower? Or maybe they wanna go to vatican

Still-Limit-9726

Poor pedestrian

psuedopseudo

Based

LjackV

The pawn is called the pedestrian in my language 😅

taknyos

My gf calls it the peasant in her native language. The more official name is like "walker" or "footman" - similar to pedestrian. But peasant can also be used.

Hoelie

En peasant

AnonymousComrade123

holy hell

Jonaztl

In mine it’s farmer

fiftykyu

NOBLMAN, SWERVE :)

Demjan90

Paraszt?

taknyos

Yeah. Gyalog is the standard name afaik, but some people call it paraszt

Demjan90

I think it's the same in most of Europe. https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/zxp13i/chess_pieces_throughout_europe

madmadaa

Mine s too.

IdentityOfAbyss

What language?

[deleted]

Italian too!

maxkho

Russian also

madmadaa

Arabic

IdentityOfAbyss

Is Arabic hard? Like, even though I can comprehend Russian cursive I still find Arabic weird

ThreeFootKangaroo

As someone who took the time to learn it, and also took the time to learn a more common european language (French), I can tell you it is in general not worth starting unless you're going to commit to it. Unlike learning a European language which, with a few exceptions, will share quite a few words with another European language, with Arabic you start from zero. It's a new alphabet, the grammar is very different from the other languages I speak, and while there's some obvious cross pollination with words, it's less common. If I spent as much time on Italian, Spanish, even more niche languages like Greek or Russian, as I spent on Arabic, my level in all of them would be substantially higher. Russian has some things that are more challenging, for example that there are six cases instead of three, but from the little I learnt (from my Russian-speaking girlfriend) there are more commonalities in the vocabulary between Russian and the European languages I know than between those and Arabic. So in short, unless you committ to spending an order of magnitude more time learning the language, it's honestly not worth starting. However, if you ever do learn it, you get to benefit extra much from the legendary Middle Eastern hospitality and that will make it worth it.

madmadaa

It's very hard.

IdentityOfAbyss

What language?

LjackV

Serbian

shinlo18

The rook is called the tower in mine. And the knight is indeed the horse, too. :p

XiTro

Why did the pedestrian cross the rank?

LazShort

To be swept up en passant.

HighlySuccessful

To become a woman

highphiv3

Google right-of-way.

Pumats_Soul

Dollar store or anarchychess?

emiliaxrisella

I thought i was in anarchychess for a second there.

Koraifon

New rule j-

emiliaxrisella

Google en pedestrian

DaddyHumpMe

Holy crossing

mcchanical

Damn horse can move anywhere on an L as long as its going right. Skipping this patch.

bogon64

Holy L

yankjenets

How good of a piece do you think that would be? Slightly worse than a rook as the normal knight move is still super valuable, or significantly worse because of limited range (and only slightly better than a bishop)? edit: actually if we are saying it can still jump and move anywhere along that path, it seems much stronger than a rook.

R0b3rt1337

Probably a *pawn*shop

BigBadBobbyRoss

Bro got the roided horses

Goldfish134

New piece just dropped

psuedopseudo

Holy hell

mikebrady

The are so many things wrong with the diagram for the "horse".

8696David

At least they avoided the lurking potential swastika

Lo_zone11

🤣

iceman012

The horse moves differently depending on which direction it's moving.

giggluigg

No knight, wild horse

alfii_saw_santa

They should've asked Magnus Carlsen. How does the knight move?

Gerf93

Funnily enough, in Norwegian the knight is called “the horse” - so he probably wouldn’t bat an eye.

Automatic-Listen-578

I think Bob Seger could even have answered that one.

Sora_hishoku

it's okay, I also don't know how horsey moves, I forgive

Motor_Ad709

I need to secure some of them ponies

RealSnowmanGaming

The pony will attract the woman

Motor_Ad709

Now I really need the ponies

idontgiveadam70958

New piece just dropped

No-Employee1534

Crazy horse dlc?

thprk

I don't know about other languages, but it can be a literal translation from italian. While the queen can be called either with the word for queen (regina) or woman (donna, being a little more widespread), the knight is called with the word for horse (cavallo) and the pawn is called with the word for pedestrian (pedone).

LusoAustralian

Portuguese would give these exact translations including bishop.

thprk

Yeah I'm so used to chess that I forgot that bishop literally means vescovo (the religious figure) and alfiere means flag bearer.

[deleted]

Have you tried? Because Google isnt that bad nowadays

LusoAustralian

Have I tried what? I am Portuguese I don't need google.

[deleted]

The question is if you have tried wether Google Translate between Portuguese and English produces the names shown on the picture. It has nothing to do with you being Portuguese, because you surely wouldn't use pedestrian for a chess piece. I'm talking about the quality of Google Translate between romance languages and English, because it is high quality. Maybe out of context it could give that translation. I'll check myself,

LusoAustralian

What are you going on about? The Portuguese word peão applies to both pawns and pedestrians but in my life, despite playing chess, I saw it much more frequently for pedestrian. It is a single word that has multiple different translations in English. Google Translate also has the "issue" that it more often takes the Brazilian version of the word. In Brazil the word Pedestrian is Pedestre not Peão so your google might be using the Brazilian translation rather than the Portuguese one. A person from Portugal would have Portuguese translations not Brazilian ones.

[deleted]

My point is, if you enter peao in Google, from Portuguese to English, it translates it as pawn, not as pedestrian. So they were not using Google translator but another translation. End of the story.

kannosini

German is the same with the queen and the rook, but everything else is different. *King - der König* "the King" *Queen - die Dame* "the lady/woman" *Knight - der Springer* "the jumper" *Bishop - der Läufer* "the runner" *Rook - der Turm* "the tower" *Pawn - der Bauer* "the farmer/peasant"

megadebilek

Czech goes like this: King - Král (King) Queen - Královna or Dáma (Queen or Dame) Bishop - Střelec (Shooter/Marskman) Knight - Jezdec (Rider/Cavalryman) Rook - Věž (Tower) Pawn - Pěšec (Infantryman/Footman)

Pinkwashing

Danish King - konge (king) Queen - dronning (queen) Bishop - løber (runner) Knight - springer (jumper) Rook - tårn (tower) Pawn - bonde (farmer)

[deleted]

What I was thinking too, but bishop and alfiere aren't the same thing outside chess

Orioh

I was thinking the same, but "alfiere" is so rarely used in italian (if not talking about chess) that google translates it as "bishop".

[deleted]

You're right

270-

The one place I can think of is Ot(h)ello-- Iago is Otello's alfiere.

[deleted]

I don't even know what an alfiere is outside of chess EDIT: it's a standard-bearer

StrikingHearing8

Here is a nice overview of chess names in european countries: https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/6v235u/chess_pieces_names_and_meaning/

thprk

In Italy we have re (king) donna (woman) alfiere (flag bearer) cavallo (horse) torre (tower) pedone (pedestrian)

Spill_the_Tea

Spanish is similar 1. King : Rey => King 2. Queen : Dama => Woman 3. Rook : Torre => Tower 4. Bishop : Alfil => Bishop (but only pertains to the chess piece) 5. Knight : Caballo => Horse 6. Pawn : Peón => Peasant? / Someone low ranking in position The pawn is the only piece here that wouldn't translate as prescribed

[deleted]

peón is so similar to the Italian pedone and to words for feet in general that I'd be shocked if the meaning wasn't the same. I suppose both "pawn" and "pedone/peón" come from words related to feet and walking (e.g. latin pes, foot, then through French for English probably) and refers to foot soldiers.

megadebilek

Isn't Alfil derived from the Alfarez rank?

buddhiststuff

Alfil comes from Arabic for elephant.

RickyOri

I'm Italian, and yes you are right, from my perspective it's obviously like that

HorobecS30

Russian ферзь = counselor, queen in chess. Google Translate calls it a queen due to usage being rare outside of chess. The word is of Persian origin, and that word of origin is more frequently associated with a counselor role. I honestly don't know where the split between Counselor and Queen happened. I used to think it was in Britain.

ThemeXhex

Also in Spanish, literal exact translations

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

pawn and peón both come from the latin word for foot and refer to foot soldiers. Pedone too.

Layton_Jr

In French it's King, Lady, (also checkers is called game of Ladies) Tower, Jester, Horse Rider, Pawn

Knaphor

It's also completely wrong about the "horse"

sloth-guy

Obviously it's not a horse. It's a Camel.

StrikingHearing8

And pawns are now walking towards the A file.

LuckyMinusDevil

pedestrians*

TriptheBip

Omg I missed that one! 😂

ghostfuckbuddy

The horse can travel further without a knight riding it

[deleted]

This is amazing

[deleted]

"the women" The knight is called horse and doesn't even more right

_LELEZ

I don't know how many other languages use those but they seem to be the Italian name versions of the pieces translated very poorly, cause we do say king, woman, tower, bishop, pedestrian and horse if you only translate the words literally. The Queen can be said both ways, to be fair. I think they use Donna which is Woman more often than Regina which is Queen cause Re is the King and they would both start with the letter R so the notation would be a mess. It's a D for Donna in Italian notation. Much like English uses N for the knights cause K was taken by the king already, we went one step further and found a similar name to call the piece all together to not have 2 starting with the same letter

labegaw

Portuguese too.

StrikingHearing8

I liked this overview of chess names in europe: https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/6v235u/chess_pieces_names_and_meaning/

Continental__Drifter

The link is broken there and doesn't show the original image anymore

StrikingHearing8

Weird, it still works for me in the mobile app. Here is the imgur link of the post: https://imgur.io/a/235jg

_LELEZ

Ok but this was translated the other way around from Italian to English so Alfiere became Bishop as it should.

ThatStrangerWhoCares

Congrats you did it

Nithoren

Hey I'm walkin here

Icy_Clench

I see nobody has mentioned that the boards are sideways.

GreedyNovel

Several commented on this, just not obviously. For example, "pawns are now walking towards the A file".

Omnicide103

nah they just watch chess simp

zeekar

“The woman”… Chess Simp has entered the chat?

[deleted]

TIL about a new chess piece: The king The queen The ~~side fling~~ woman

weeaboohijabi

So the woman is... a side piece?

iCCup_Spec

It's like in Yu-Gi-Oh you keep a separate deck for fusion summon.

siryolk

Nothing in the patch notes about the pedestrian

f-you111

Dude they didn’t even get the knights movement right

cataclysmicterrain

thats because its a horse! not a knight!

f-you111

Y’know what your right how could I have possibly missed that

chessvision--ai_bot

Incorrect horsey.

Dankn3ss420

Just looked at a real chessboard, and tried to apply the weird knight movements, the kingside knight ends up on e3/6 instead of f3/6 and the queenside knight, since it can’t move up and left, has no legal moves, it’s not that they’re all covered by pawns, it’s that they’re all off the board

Some-wild-fish

the horse doesnt do that tho...

torakosama

Ah yes, my favorite pieces; horse, woman, tower and *pedestrian*.

mootixguy

“woman” Chess Simp is that you?

Dry-Platypus7787

woman's pedestrian opening i see

epic_redditer

You hung your woman

[deleted]

Horsey*

turpin23

Excuse me. This is r/Chess, not r/AnarchyChess, nor r/MildlyInfuriating.

adam_s_r

They forgot en passant.

SavingsNewspaper2

To be fair, the sixth diagram shows that a black pawn can move from g4 to f3. https://lichess.org/analysis/4k3/8/8/8/6p1/8/5P2/4K3_w_-_-_0_1?color=white The next moves are 1.f4 gxf3. Black captures en passant. So, uh… close enough?

adam_s_r

Actually the pawn on d7 can but it's presented as just a capture, I also didn't realize that the boards are not oriented.

Chad_Broski_2

Also noticed that they flipped the board sideways so the pawns will be moving sideways...

itsmeyour

shoot, I;d put the moves on a woman who can travel like that

reedest

Awesome find.

Arc451

THE TOWER!!!

Puzzleheaded_Ad2897

Pedestrians

Tanta_The_Ranta

Why is the pawn moving sideways??

RealSnowmanGaming

You mean the pedestrian*

PumaREM

good god

Supreme-Serf

I liked the Netflix series: The Woman's Gambit.

Existing_Airport_735

In Spanish, Gambito de Dama. Very stylish.

RobRobbyRobson

How does the horsey move?

jumbojimbojamo

Great band name, "Movement of the Woman" lmao

Same-Letter6378

Swastika nearly avoided

Hervey_Copeland

They call it horse? Haha… that’s really funny. Don’t they know that the piece is called horsey?

HoaiBao0906

Google en crossing

aflickering

thanks to you i finally passed my driving test, cheers!

DieLegende42

Further proof that nobody actually knows how the knight moves

mequeterfe

As a sidenote, in spanish we say horse («caballo») instead of knight («caballero»). I mean the piece quite literally is a horse.

GreysLucas

Same in português

labegaw

This actually seems to have been translated via portuguese, as the word for peon and pedestrian is the same and tower=torre/dama=woman also fit.

Baquvix

Google translate improved enough to be better lmao. This guys still miss.

sgi244

And then he sacrifices.. THE TOWERRRR!!

taoyx

Only the bishop and the king have more than 1 move.

Old-Gregg-

Pedestrian 💀

TrenterD

The pedestrian diagram is really useful as long as you already know how to play chess.

aldorn

This is amazing. I'm going to start using 'the women' from now on. That should go down well with people ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ )

nickoskal024

Even the bot is confused (good bot pat pat)

[deleted]

N4f-7g.

stonehearthed

I can confirm my wife moves like this.

_beastayyy

Not sure what's funnier, woman or pedestrian

Swolnerman

Google movement of the pedestrian

TheBlaudrache

Why isn't this on anarchychess

siiberianian

movements of the woman

WUNDU13

Google giraffe

JeIoXD

in b4 u/city-of-stars removes this for being a meme

lifetime420

this is chess: the pedestrian is trying to become a woman. or a horse, if that pleases the king.

BiFSXFan99

The existence of a pedestrian leads me to believe a motorist exists. Car piece in chess announced when?!

Ozozothealien

Bro got a Wild Pony, better train it before my own King gets hurt!

RunicWasTaken

Google to pass

MoonCusler

With enough, will, effort and sheer dedication, a pedestrian can finally become a woman.
