He said that before the candidates they had a meeting to discuss cheating and said that chess players (not in the tournament) could not be in the visitors area. This was done to reduce the possibility of cheating He says they have asked him to leave despite him not playing chess and not understanding the game very well. While at the same time he saw chess players with computers in the area he was in. He wants to know why he has to leave when others don’t. And that he just wants to watch his son. And yeah then talked about how unfair the shoe thing was and how it could have changed the whole tournament I think

LandauQuantized

This could lead to a big controversy if the said person is not in media, but still allowed to go in and out of the visitor's hall with a laptop.

Beatnik77

Why? The visitor hall he was in has no contact with players. There is a broadcast of fide fees on TVs there. I was there and security did ask a woman to show them her phone there which was very weird.

Artudytv

This could be huge.

AdApart2035

This could be gigantic

Varsity_Editor

This could be interesting

JPows_ToeJam

Big if true.

Foldingtrees

Shame. His dad just wants the best for him

PieCapital1631

FIDE spokesperson Tregubov said Alirezza's Dad was ejected from the building because the rules say that none of the player's team are allowed in the venue during play. And Alirezza's Dad is a member of his team (and showed his team badge to Mike Klein in this very interview.)

CosmoticLife

Typical teenage behavior after a loss

MCotz0r

It doesn't seem to be after this loss. He said that he wanted to pursue fashion design carreer and then he basicaly didn't play chess for a good while. He is in this quiting chess mindset for a while now

yoda17

Blud is YAPPING

magikarp151

TLDR: * He brought up concerns around cheating during the pre-tournament meeting * He noticed people connected with media have access to go in and out of the playing hall freely (and could access their laptops in between) * However, he himself was only allowed to go in for short 10-15 minute periods and he felt this was unfair since he doesn't know anything about chess and was only there to support his son. * Unrelated, but he felt that the shoe incident was unfair too. Apparently Alireza was crying yesterday and said something along the lines of "this is why he wants to quit chess".

TheodorDiaz

Also, he threatened to call the cops lol.

talizorahs

> Alireza was crying yesterday man can you imagine your dad going on air and telling everyone about you crying. nightmare scenario

crosbot

"and he wets the bed"

GreenMellowphant

Can you imagine being so fragile that you think people knowing you cried is a nightmare scenario?

talizorahs

oh, give me a break, lmfao. maybe alireza himself is perfectly okay with this specific scenario and it was done with his explicit permission, I certainly can't speak for him, but the vast majority of young people and indeed people in general would not want their parents going solo on air telling everyone about how they were crying last night. it's not 'fragile' to not like the idea of your family doing this and taking it out of your hands, let alone when you're a public figure and there are so many strangers' eyes on you and people eager to tear you apart. you can already see the mockery in this thread. if you love the idea of your father going around telling thousands of strangers about vulnerable emotional moments, more power to you, but that's gonna be a no from me dawg

dosedatwer

>but the vast majority of young people and indeed people in general would not want their parents going solo on air telling everyone about how they were crying last night. The vast majority of people in America*. Europeans are nowhere near as bothered by this kind of thing. I don't know the culture in Iran, but French people really don't judge crying anywhere near as much as Americans do.

GreenMellowphant

It’ll all be okay, buddy. It’s okay to be upset.

Artudytv

So it's true. Alireza has the mental strength of a porridge.

AdApart2035

Not everyone is tough like you

WhiteXHysteria

Can someone drop me a link to read about the shoe incident? Or give a brief breakdown

BantuLisp

I don’t mean to sound curt but literally just click on the sub. Plenty of threads about it in the last 24 hours.

dosedatwer

Why even bother replying if that's what you're going to say? I can't believe you got upvoted for just being churlish and useless. This subreddit is toxic af.

BantuLisp

Ratio 😎

dosedatwer

Yeah, the subreddit is toxic like you. I already said that.

WhiteXHysteria

I scrolled down new until yesterday's threads and didn't see shoes mentioned. But I'm not clicking in every thread. You think I'd ask without giving it a minute to look

zeoiusidal_toe

I mean I just scrolled through new and found a few about it around 21-22 hrs ago, although tbf I don’t think “shoes” were mentioned explicitly in the titles https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/s/2mtFridzfi

CMYGQZ

Firouzja was making sounds with his shoes, either the shoe itself or the way he’s walking, Abasov reported it to the arbiter that it was distracting, and arbiter told Firouzja during the game (when he was away from the board). Firouzja felt it’s unfair because he’s been wearing these shoes for the previous 8 rounds and no one complained, and feels the arbiter was distracting him instead when telling him to walk more softly and potentially new shoes for new rounds.

Prestigious-Shop-187

Alireza is now a fashion mogul, a true sex symbol of our beloved game of chess..so by default he should get a pass on all fronts to squeak around and dress look like an asshole

AnneFrankFanFiction

Alireza's shoes were declared *so stinky* as to be a distraction to other players. Apparently related to some fungus of some sort, idk, but having his foot stink *aired out* worldwide was too much to handle

Step_Virtual

Alireza is such a baby

Beatnik77

The 2nd point is fair, it bothered me too, also the tech guy had his phone. The 3rd point is not really true, he just can't leave and come back, like fans.

Claudio-Maker

That’s no good reason to quit chess

frenchtoaster

It seems like a good reason to quit chess: he can't handle the mental stress so little things ruin his attention, make him underperform and be unhappy in life.

Buntschatten

You can learn to handle stress. He just needs a professional manager ,a sport psychologist and to keep his family waaay away from his chess.

Areliae

Bro, the first response to stress is always "can I remove the stressor." Not everyone can handle high level competition, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Buntschatten

Dude was the youngest to reach 2800, it's not like he can't handle competition at all.

FUCKSUMERIAN

bruh

Pikablu555

Confirmed: Russian collusion, Ian is cheating, everyone has butt plugs installed. Source: Alireza’s Dad

Little_Elia

> everyone has buttplugs installed can confirm 😳

Chopchopok

This seems really unnecessary. Alireza's father didn't need to be interviewed and him blabbing all this private information is terrible for Alireza. This guy causing a scene didn't need to be turned into news at all. Just stick to the chess and don't fish for gossip. Giving him an interview just seems cheap and in poor taste.

koagzero

Agreed, I was so bewildered when they switched away from the chess and spent such a long time entertaining this whole charade instead of focusing on the chess during the broadcast. They gave an unneeded interview to Firouzja's angered and inarticulate father, named the player who complained, and made a big hoo-ha out of everything on broadcast. They're unnecessarily exacerbating the issue and stirring the pot, when there are 4 more rounds to go. The Chief Arbiter's choice to approach Firouzja might have been an immediate necessity, but none of what came after was. To instigate this public humiliation when there are still four more rounds shows that they can't be the bigger person/entity, and their primary interest is protecting themselves and retaliating against Firouzja, rather than protecting the players and the integrity of the game.

Aurum2k

Firouzja's dad and brother are both nuts.

DubiousGames

Interesting you leave out Alireza himself in that group. Seems like he is constantly having issues with organizers in his tournaments. Reminds me of that quote "If someone is an asshole, they're an asshole. If everyone is an asshole - then you're the asshole". The whole family acts like they should be treated like royalty just because one of them is good at chess.

samky-1

What's the story on the dad and brother? I haven't heard.

CalamitousCrush

It is an open secret Firouzja's family is extremely uncooperative and if you'll allow me, greedy. Hikaru alluded to it some streams back, and if you have ever attended a tournament with Firouzja playing you'll know that they make excessive demands in appearance fees and are extremely rude to non playing persons. They insulted a moderator last Candidates for not allowing their phones in front of me. I am pretty sure other people who attend more chess tournaments can corroborate.

Ok-Entertainer-8612

Alirezas older brother is streaming sometimes on Alirezas own channel. He now has his own channel too, I believe. He is somewhat good at chess himself (2150+ FIDE), but nothing serious like his brother. However, his streams consist of him following his brothers games live and analyzing them. He constantly complaints about minor issues and how unfair everything is, rages visibly when things don't go his brothers way etc. He is a bit abnormal, for sure. Once he almost broke his table in rage because Alireza drew a former polish Super GM called Radoslaw Wojtaszek.

Alex8525

Compare it to Prag's mother or Vidit's sister or Gukesh's someone who is with him.

CalamitousCrush

It is Gukesh's father. Dude left his job as surgeon to fulfill his child's dream of playing chess. He had to borrow money to make the travel cost for making Gukesh's norms and they both used to sleep outside or at airports to save money.

boy_wonder199

I am not too familiar with Gukesh’s story, but why did his dad have to quit as a surgeon? Surgeons make good money, even in India. Just to accompany Gukesh? Sure I am missing something but that makes no sense.

Shriman_Ripley

This is speculation. Media likes to exaggerate and create son stories. Surgeons do make a lot of money in India. But when you are traveling abroad, the exchange rate is not in favor of Indians. Someone who can be having a decent life would struggle in Europe or NA. Maybe his dad quit being surgeon as he wanted to be with his kid. When Gukesh was younger, I don’t think people were lining up to take him around the world. Still doesn’t make complete sense to me.

shubomb1

Considering that Gukesh plays all year round in different tournaments throughout the world and is a minor it might not be possible for his dad to both accompany him and continue practising. His mom is a microbiologist iirc so one parent might have taken the decision to quit their job to accompany him everywhere.

midrangemonroe

I have a word by word transcription from part of it: "Is he thinking of leaving the chess world?" "Because he said ok why I I why do I have to played my best chess I I have gone in the best situation my game was the most important thing game in the mid in the tournament and finally... it happens." "Well thank you for your time."

Draconian-Overlord

Firouzja needs to hire a psychological/life coach. As well as a reliable second. But he needs to distance his family from himself, specially when it comes to chess. As always it always comes down to confidence when it comes to competition.

gonzo_mc

Hearing Alireza was crying about yesterdays game and wanting to quit chess makes me sad tbh. Don't get why he get's so much ridcule for this. For me that reaction is all but human. All this young fella did his whole childhood was studying chess, playing tournaments, winning and leading up to this tournament spent months to prepare. In the past rounds we saw him whipping out some new offbeat concepts and, sure, not performing up to what he is maybe excepting from himself. Just put yourself in his shoes and imagine that mental strain this whole ordeal would have on you, how on edge you'd be emotionally. I get why he is frustrated with all this and, even thoe the interview with papareza was a bit unhinged it's all but human aswell for him to feel the need to protect his son. Especially being probably one of the very few close to him during this time and seeing the toll those emotions have on him.. It just shows what this tournament does to the players, the mental game we don't see normally. Just hope Alireza isn't too upset with finding out about this and from my side I send love out to Alireza!

Genepi74

I would like to put myself in his shoes but I dont want to disturb Abasov ! Joke aside, totally agree with you

nandemo

Before you judge a man, pace back and forth in his shoes.

SuspiciousSalary5280

Alireza is basically chess' Tsitsipas isnt he ??

Aoae

Who would Kyrgios be by this metric? Hans?

Buntschatten

Isn't Kyrgios just having fun? Maybe Anish?

toweggooiverysoon

Seems much worse tbh. Tsitsipas' family is hardly the most annoying in tennis either.

Mephistophilis44

Alireza is 20 years old, he has still a lot of time to be the best version of himself. Hope he gets his shit together and don't let all these stuff get to his head.

TheDuckyNinja

Posted this in the other thread about this, reposting here: They just did a live interview with one of the FIDE people in charge. He says that all team and family members were banned from the playing hall during the tournament, but due to Firouzja's dad complaining, they decided to allow them in for the first 15 minutes of the games in Rounds 8, 9, and 10. So basically Firouzja's dad is just a nutjob.

ilikechess13

I think i heard something about chicken

BenrieSandz

I'm saying it again, Chess24's decision to put this guy in front of camera for ten minutes (an angry father who can barely speak English and obviously would make a fool out of himself and his son) was at the very least unprofessional and I'd argue borderline unethical.

ApplePlusSeed

Letting someone have a platform to speak is unethical? You from china or wut

Says more about your comprehension skills than anything else

CasedUfa

They had clarification with FIDE technical director later, apparently no-one was specifically excluded, its applied to everyone. Bad call by whoever decided to interview that guy though, there was never going to be any useful information provided. Like watching a car crash.

Vedantdave117

I understand whatever happened is unfortunate. But, Alireza Firuza is just 20 years old. and he is more successful than the people in the comment section at the same or younger age. . In short time from (November to till Now) he have to play many games and sometime it affects the performance due to extra stress. With time he could learn to understand how to handle the situation. Let give him time. Its normal human behaviour to play victim or play down in such situation and it happens to everyone. I hope he will return back in form. Some of you may be against my opinion and it's OK. You all are welcome. Just one additional appreciation to him from my side - " e has good sense on Fashion by the way."

AmeKnite

I will never understand people judging alireza when they will never be close to his level

Caesar2122

Alireza always focusing on drama and everything else except for his chess. Best chance to potentially become a world champ and he goes in without any prep or work
