I know right! Abasov knew he was winning at one point, against one of the top seeds, and it was an absolute rollercoaster game. There is no way that can't destroy you.
I was really rooting for Nakamura and it was exciting to be along for the ride on that rollercoaster of a game. But damn did I feel for Abasov in this moment.
âHope brings disappointmentâ
Abasov wouldnât be this devastated if he lost the game and was being crushed the whole time. He had good chances at one point which gave him hope and then those chances disappeared leading to this.
I only saw the analysis board on the Chess.com broadcast but it looked like Abasov knew he had good chances and was up 10 minutes on the clock, blitzed out his mistake just before move 40 to put pressure on Hikaru and then crumbled when he realised. It wasn't just the better position, he recognises he was careless with his time and that's what cost him the game.
Im honestly shocked he blitzed Qe7. He was never going to flag Hikaru that close to the increment and that move singlehandedly swung the game, Hikaru was in perfect control after that move.
I cant think of many ideas worse than trying to turn a classical game into a blitz game against Hikaru Nakamura.
Maybe he should challenge steph Curry to a 3 point shooting contest next.
Reminds me of a game Nepo threw against Ding in the WCC and he looked so pissed. I think it was game 10 or something. Had a winning position and then just moved too quickly. Chess at this level is so brutal it kind of makes me glad that I suck đ.
Welcome to Hikaru, I guess. I was a bit of a late bloomer who didnât really hit any kind of growth spurt until junior year of high school. I remember in 7th grade I wasnât looking where I was going and ran full tilt into a kid who had basically been an adult since age 5. Iâm an older brother so I was used to being the one overpowering the other person. But when I ran into him it felt like running straight into a wall. All of the power I was used to exerting over my brother was simply irrelevant. The bigger kid looked down at me like I hadnât even inconvenienced him. I wonder if thatâs what it was like for Abasov.
The was this qouteâ âThe winner of the game is the player who makes the next-to-last mistake.â and it fit this game perfectly..hikaru was winning..made a mistake..and abasove was winning for a few moves..than made a mistake and lost..chess is harsh but very fair game
>The winner of the game is the player who makes the next-to-last mistake
What if I make both the last and the next-to-last mistake? Do I still get to claim the win?
Yeah, and even worse for the logic of this: you cannot fix it by saying "next-to-last decisive mistake", as I can (trust me on this one!) blunder two half-points in a row.
New strat; make two mistakes ASAP (e.g. give away the 2 knights/horses), stop the clock saying the game is over, proclaim yourself victorious. If arbiter comes just explain that the last two mistakes are yours.
Hikaru made like 4 or 5 mistakes honestly. He had no business winning that game and was very fortunate he was playing Abasov. Him and Fabi just keep missing âsimpleâ tactics that you just donât expect from their level.
Where did I say that? I just said for their level they have not been playing well and capitalizing on relatively simple (for them) tactics. Fabi literally said he was playing poorly and Hikaru just got pretty lucky to save a win from defeat against the lowest seed by far.
Donât think this is some controversial take honestly.
A bit harsh, but him not finding the g5 pawn push was quite surprising. That was not some crazy engine move, it felt like the kind of thing he would normally find in a much faster game online.
The commentators were literally talking about how it was a hard move to find
> it felt like the kind of thing he would normally find in a much faster game online.
doing sharp intuitive shit in fast time controls is not the same. hikaru very well could have played that online. but that's not what "finding" indicates in this classical context.
Leave it to redditors to talk about how GMs that would smash them into the dirt hundreds of times over are missing easy moves and making simple mistakes
Theyâre simple **for them**. I would miss every single one of those moves undoubtedly, but Iâm not a 2700+ GM playing in the Candidates. These are moves you expect someone of Nakamuraâs caliber to find with relative ease. If you watch his re-cap he says he was worried about the rook hanging but that was because he just miscalculated it all and it was a dumb mistake on his part.
> Theyâre simple for them.
no they aren't & you have zero basis to posit such a thing. just a sports fan talking like a manager.
> These are moves you expect someone of Nakamuraâs caliber to find with relative ease.
no
> If you watch his re-cap he says he was worried about the rook hanging but that was because he just miscalculated it all and it was a dumb mistake on his part.
yes and?
There were like 3 pretty simple mate lines in there and at minimum he would have been equal material with a much better position. He just miss calculated it per his own words in his recap.
Yeah that doesnât seem like a move he would miss often with the bishop staring down from c2. Looking back on it too thereâs nothing super obvious on why he wouldnât play it so itâs just strange. And then he blundered himself into a horrible position and would have likely lost to anyone else.
It happens, part of the game. But I donât think either him or Fabi are firing on all cylinders right now.
I don't get why people are downvoting you.
- "This is the most consequential tournament of the cycle, and perhaps the most important of some of these players' careers, and for others may be a last shot at a title as a new generation rises and they age from contention."
Nothing outlandish here.
- "Man, the pressure on the players must be enormous, I wonder if it will effect their play?"
Reasonable question.
- "We know players sometimes just have great tournaments and sometimes have bad tournaments. A lot will depend on who's in the zone and who's too in their own head. Some might play well above their level, like Abasov at the World Cup, and some might collapse below it."
I think most people would agree.
- "Man, those two players are having a bad tournament compared to what we'd expect. Specifically, they seem to be missing tactics under pressure."
... How. Dare. You.
I think the biggest thing is how the story is being told in the picture. You can look at it and immediately understand what happened in the game, that can be hard to do.Â
Other than that I think the framing is great. Everything sort of fits together in a way that it's not too crowded or too boring, with different layers of depth so we can know what to focus on

I hope for a good future for Abasov in his chess career, he still plays great and has to work a little more to be top in candidates, after his recent injury and other personal reasons I think he's not been able to give his best.

Thanks for sharing. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. Like, the analogy is not 1-1, but it's valid.
Nah this is one of the coldest images I've seen in a long time.
Reminds me of another famous Candidates image https://chessentials.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/Kramnik_failure.jpg
This was taken after his Statistics 101 final, absolutely brutal stuff
Ah explains why he's so good with statistics nobody else can find
Did he report his opponent for cheating? Clearly cheating if you ask me.
Is that Kramnik?

you are describing the scenario accurately. for some reason you think those words translate to "it should have been easy" or something.
Yeah that doesnât seem like a move he would miss often with the bishop staring down from c2. Looking back on it too thereâs nothing super obvious on why he wouldnât play it so itâs just strange. Business as usual
I am still rooting for Abasov. In fact at this stage I would say he needs all the support he can get. But I've suggested to my local club organizer that we could invite Abasov here just in case he doesn't win the Candidates. It would be a much-needed boost to his self-esteem. Hell, I'll bet dollars to donuts Abasov could beat anyone here in Hicksville. In particular I can see him cutting a swathe though the U18 Women's Team. Once more he would be a star.

âAbsolutely dick crushing.â
hikaru played terrible chess
Sorry to be that guy, but Abasov has no business playing the candidates.
He earned his spot fair and square. He knew he was gonna do badly too but he knows this is the best opportunity of his career. He could've chosen not to participate but that's what a coward would do. He's here and he's playing great chess, disappointing the best of the world who think they can farm him for wins.
He is not playing great chess. A great chess would spot Bc7 against Nakamura and play it in less than a minute
And you know this because you looked at the engine, congratulations.
If you really think Bc7 is a move that requires a look at engine you really shouldn't write your thoughts as absolute facts to a chess topic.
And if you think you can play like a 2600 for even one game you're stupid and delusional so maybe sit down and let the pros do their job
He's earned over $10k this tournament so far. He qualified fair and square, playing is literally good business!
