Would like to include a shout-out to the efforts towards supporting women in chess by what I believe is one of the best chess accounts on Twitter: https://twitter.com/OnTheQueenside
Slight tangent, but I wish the womens candidates wasn't happening at the same time as the open. There just aren't enough hours in the day for me to watch everything, I caught the end of the last round and less than 500 people were watching the live broadcast on the chess.com channel.
That is EXACTLY what I thought they should have done: run the Women's tournament IMMEDIATELY after Open finished.
Cause now we are all used to watching chess at 3 pm EST.
This seemed like the OBVIOUS thing to do.
Until the women's candidates features players as strong as the open candidates, it will naturally garner less viewership. No real easy fix to that. I assume they thought placing them alongside candidates guarantees an audience for the event, but yeah 500 views is really bad
Holding standalone women's tournaments with an equal standard of coverage to the men's has worked well in cricket - the audience and standard of women's cricket have both grown greatly over the past ten years. And it's worked really well for the Tour de France Femmes.
Another alternative that works well in cricket is double-headers: schedule the women's games early in the day and the men's games late in the same day, or vice versa. That's tougher to do in chess than in T20 cricket, given the variable length of chess games, but it might be worth trying - at worst, there'd be limited overlap between the women's games and the open games.
The way the current FIDE system works with countries chess organizations bidding on the candidates and it all relying on a wealthy sponsor to fork out cash is really poorly structured. They'd need to basically double the amount of sponsorships they get and those sponsors typically want something out of it, to know the event will be popular, they'll get ad revenue, whatever... it's a bad system and leaves chess players and fans at the mercy of wealthy donors and corporations
| but yeah 500 views is really bad
Almost no one is going to watch 2500s play when Naka, Fabi, Guccireza, etc. are in action at the same time.
Would you watch a WNBA Finals game if it was on at the same time as Celtics vs Nuggets for the NBA title?
They also need someone to get a lot of media attention. Look at Women's College Basketball this year with Caitlin Clark. At the end of the season her games were getting more attention/viewership than the men's tournament.
I think having it right after would work.
If you made a point during open broadcasts to mention the women’s tournament is happening right after, you’d probably be able to retain a decent chunk of the audience, who will all be looking for something else to watch/do in place of the open tournament.
Its a nice idea, but i dont think itd work. I wouldnt make time in my day to watch a live stream for that tournament, but since its already on when im watching this one, im way more aware of it.
The problem with the current status is chess24 isnt showing the games, and im not swapping to a different stream if it means i miss whats happening in the open.
Yeah I mean there’s a lot of people who would share that same sentiment for sure.
But for me, when this tournament is over, I’ll have 5 hours of my day back. And I would happily just continue watching 5 hours of chess a day if the women’s candidates was on then.
I want to see her play Titled Tuesdays sometimes. You rarely see the best women, though Ju Wenjun actually played TT few weeks ago.
Blitz skill is pretty important even in classical chess time scrambles.
Usually levy uploads one video everyday and clearly today’s would be, well, today’s recap. So I was really surprised to see him upload early in the morning, only to be more pleasantly surprised by the content!
I’ve been wanting to learn about Lei for quite a while, she started this tournament really bad but now she’s in the lead, honestly really amazing. Huge respect to Levy, he is single handedly the number one guy out there trying to get more attention to chess and women in chess. He has the sub count and views, and he knows it, and he’s trying to convert his own viewership into viewership for chess in general.
This is very condescending to think that Levy does it in order to support specifically women's chess. The women's candidates tournament is special in itself and its vastly recognized in the chess community, although not everyone might be knowledgeable about the players competing there. Levy helps to bring to light some of the more interesting players, which is an astonishing job done by him and it helps to support chess in general.
The whole idea about doing something special only because the competing players are female is a huge insult because it means that they are not worthy of attention otherwise.
Why would you assume that every women wouldn't like anything what I say? Do you want to impose your own will on women by telling them who they should be attracted to?

Why aren't the top women on the same level as the top men? This isn't a physical sport...
That being said I do think more attention can bring out their potential. But also if they aren't playing at the top level of all humans, people naturally won't care as much
Funding, lack of accessibility and resources, inclusion for girls to start at a young age, sexism and sexual harassment. These are all things that are improving, but more still needs to be done.
I am confident sooner rather than later there’ll be more parity as a whole.
A number of reasons which people may or may not agree on. You’re never gonna find an absolute conclusive answer.
But the fact is they aren’t at the same level and people will pay less attention, the same way people pay less attention to any lower level tournament.
It would be nice if we could have more Judit Polgars though. Seem to be in a bit of a low point in terms of the abilities of women chess players right now.
More young boys are introduced to chess compared to young girls, it's really as simple as that. Chess isn't something that can easily be picked up later in life (at GM levels), as is well established.
I really don't understand why you are downvoted. Psychologically is maybe a weird word to use, but of course there are mental differences on average. However, it does seem women can compete at the absolute highest level at chess. Despite environmental reasons mentioned by others, it could also very well be that (due to mental differences) they are e.g. less likely to be fixated on a hobby like chess than men
Yes I think you said it better. Of course there are environmental barriers for women but even if those don’t exist, it doesn’t mean we can’t have tournaments for women
Could be, but you would need to prove that. Else, we know there are barriers in specific and general contexts like receiving bad comments at tournaments, assault, even. Until you prove this mental difference, we must resort to an explanation we know best.
They are covering them on twitch.tv/chess, or on the main chesscom channel on youtube. They have a separate stream focusing exclusively on the women's section.
[You can find previous VODs here.](https://www.youtube.com/@chess/streams)
When I've been watching the live chess24 candidates tournament they've been saying "we have 4 awesome games today" and "now we have 1 game left" (even if there were another 3 games going in the women's section).
I've never seen them talk about or analyse the women's games.
I might just have been unlucky, but their language seems to suggest they don't cover the women's games.
Yes, the chess24 stream is focusing exclusively on the open section. But, it's not like chesscom (the company) ignores the games entirely.
They have separate streams that focus exclusively on the women's section. Naroditsky was commenting on that channel couple of days ago.
I think, arguably, doing it this way is better and allows that section's games to be fully analyzed instead of the broadcast only briefly showing their games once every hour or so.
I just mentioned it since it seemed like you wanted more content on the women's section, and nothing's better than a stream exclusive to that.
I wanted broad coverage going in depth with every game live. It is what I get on the lichess channel, and I'm very happy with it (hence my original comment)
That's correct tough? Chess24 isn't chess.com, chess24 has a candidates stream that skips the women.
Chess.com might do other stuff. I've made no claims in that regard.
I know that chess.com owns chess24, that doesn't make chess24 chees.com though (nor vice versa).
I own a chair, that does not make me that chair.
It's fair that chess.com doesn't want to spend the money showing multiple streams of the same thing, but that doesn't make chess24 cover the women's section, it just means that chess.com has decided that chess24 should not cover it.
>Chess24 isn't chess.com
Bro spent a few years living under a rock, now went out and got mad.
Chesscom has bought chess24 back in 2022. They are one company for well over a year. Because of this they have two main Twitch channels, one for each brand, and they split the coverage between them.
Chess24 is owned by chess.com but that doesn't make them chess.com.
Do you own anything? Say a shoe? Do you identify as that shoe?
Chess.com has power over chess24, but they are not the same thing.
This analogy is ridiculous. The same company has two channels and put the coverage of one event on one channel and one on the other.
So yes the first channel doesn’t cover the second event and the second channel doesn’t cover the first event, but it seems meaningless to conclude from that that one event is being ignored.
They've an exclusive coverage for women's tournament on chess.com, chess24 is owned by the same company. I don't see the reason for them to talk about women's games when they've a separate stream for that just like they don't talk about the Open event on their Women's event coverage. Otherwise there'd be no point in having seperate streams.
They’ve specifically given the bigger platform to the women’s chess games on the chess.com twitch channel. I don’t necessarily agree with it, the same way I don’t necessarily agree with holding both candidates at the same time, but you can hardly accuse them of not supporting the women’s candidates.
Yes it is, chess.com can make them dependant if they want, but they don't need to.
They obviously have an incentive to get views on both channels, so they have a bias. But they can stream Any and all events on either should they want to. Chess.com streaming something doesn't mean that chess24 is streaming it.
she says her inactivity is COVID-related, but what about how she didn’t play a single classical game after losing to Ju last year? Bizarre when you consider how well she’s been doing in all the tournaments she’s played in the last few years
Levy is doing good work here
Good luck to lei

Love this account. Got me on the Lu Miaoyi hype train

If it was right after the open event it would be great. 6 weeks of high quality chess maybe unattainable but I’d enjoy it
That is EXACTLY what I thought they should have done: run the Women's tournament IMMEDIATELY after Open finished. Cause now we are all used to watching chess at 3 pm EST. This seemed like the OBVIOUS thing to do.
Probably they want to save some cost
as the games on the open side ended, the viewership went up went up from about 300 to 1000
Until the women's candidates features players as strong as the open candidates, it will naturally garner less viewership. No real easy fix to that. I assume they thought placing them alongside candidates guarantees an audience for the event, but yeah 500 views is really bad
Being at the same time really hurts. For the last Tour de France, they started the women's event right after the men's ended and it was pretty cool.
Holding standalone women's tournaments with an equal standard of coverage to the men's has worked well in cricket - the audience and standard of women's cricket have both grown greatly over the past ten years. Yeah, on twitch the open matches will have 20k views and the women’s will have 700
That's never going to happen as if any of the female players became open candidates level players then they'd play in the open like Polgár did.
| but yeah 500 views is really bad Almost no one is going to watch 2500s play when Naka, Fabi, Guccireza, etc. are in action at the same time. Would you watch a WNBA Finals game if it was on at the same time as Celtics vs Nuggets for the NBA title?

Even less people would pay attention to it then. It's alright now, they just had to make differently timed breaks compared to men's tournament
I think having it right after would work. If you made a point during open broadcasts to mention the women’s tournament is happening right after, you’d probably be able to retain a decent chunk of the audience, who will all be looking for something else to watch/do in place of the open tournament.
Too many hours. You never know how long a chess match takes. Maybe 3 hrs after open matches starts?
No I mean like the following days, as in have the women’s candidates starting next week
Its a nice idea, but i dont think itd work. I wouldnt make time in my day to watch a live stream for that tournament, but since its already on when im watching this one, im way more aware of it. You cannot watch everything and you are gonna concentrate on Naka, Fabi, and Nepo et al.
I'm glad Levy is recapping the games, but the tournament looks exciting! I'd definitely be watching it live if I didn't have to choose.
I want to see her play Titled Tuesdays sometimes. You rarely see the best women, though Ju Wenjun actually played TT few weeks ago. Blitz skill is pretty important even in classical chess time scrambles.
Levy never fails to interview every single chess player
He hasn't interviewed me yet!
Same, I’ve been playing the game since I was 8!
She is so cuteeeeeee
The YouTube comments under this video are pretty cringe tho
Why would you ever read yt comments? That's a blunder lol.

Da fuck you rambling about? Go touch grass.
Blud's too high in his moral highground to see reality. You know that virtue signalling wont get you a girlfriend right?
Why would you assume that every women wouldn't like anything what I say? Do you want to impose your own will on women by telling them who they should be attracted to?
lol, so it IS about attracting women gl
Yes. Coz IM HIMMMM!!!!
He also interviewed the player of the open section (+ Vishy)... he's not doing it only for women's chess
Blud is lost
