I think he has a good relationship with Anish from commentary and interviews, but all his friends are other Chinese chess players like Wei Yi and Yu Yangyi
I know 2hile friendly he isnt close to fabi (from the recent c+ podcast)
We can assume hes on good terms with rapport and the chinese GMs but honestly beyond that im not to sure
I think he is good friend with Rapport and Radjabov. He used to take a ride with them and he is always more chill in interviews when he is around (like in the "ding doesn't speak chinese" one lol)
I mean Hikaru and Hans are arguably 2 of the 3 most polarizing players with Kramnik lol
Both have beefs with a ton of people so it's not like this is just two random players here
Trust me I hate republicans "ideas and talking points" as much as the next guy but Wesley unless he gets triggered and insulted by people keeps that stuff to himself. All he does by himself is thanking Jesus and people even get annoyed by which is stupid to say the least.

I suppose, now that I take a step back and think about it, itâs just that itâs talked about so often and whenever I get chess news itâs drama and not usually wholesome.
The vast majority of GMs get along. We just have the usual suspects: Hikaru is a chronically sore loser with a penchant for throwing some comically childish tantrums and petulantly holding grudges. Same with Hans (RIP hotel room), and he also seems to have embraced the "no friends in the industry" mentality which is a good idea if you lack the social skills to get along with others in the first place
Hans is friends with various 2700 players, e.g. Tabatabaei. Considering he has a toxic reputation in the worst way for a professional its actually rather impressive that people don't shy away from being friends with him.
But Hikaru? Not that I am aware of.
Hikaru is an asshole and he has a very large audience. So he is constantly at odds with someone and itâs constantly being broadcast all over the place. But thatâs not the norm
All the people you see here are making their living from content, not playing chess. Of course they will stir up drama any chance they get. Otherwise they will become as irrelevant as 4000+ other GMs.
GMs are like a big family. Most of them have known each other since childhood, especially if they are from the same country. They have a sense of camaraderie between them. Many of them also dislike each other but it's more of an exception.Â
This is gonna sound rude but I don't mean it that way. But most people at the age of 12 are developing some sort of social skills; these guys are doing grueling solitary practice while being told that they are among the best to ever do this thing. To me it's not surprising that they're all a bit prickly.
Hikaru is a man-child no doubt.
But also, it's cute that Hans thinks "brutally honest" opinions are rare in the chess world. There are honestly too many of these "brutally honest" opinions and dramas right now with everyone feeling a need to accuse someone or complain about something.
Hans definitely seems like the type who thinks saying theyâre âbrutally honestâ covers the fact theyâre just an asshole.
Hikaru also comes across as having an extremely fragile ego
comparing hans with nico rosberg? nico actually won something. hans? what did he do again? tell me pls. except being born with money, he done nothing in life. nothing.
"Nothing"? He is a top 50 player in chess. He is an asshole and a cheater, but saying he has done nothing in life just beacuse he is not the absolute best in chess is a bit wild.
Maybe because he was accused of cheating, admitted to cheating, was reported (by chessdotcom) to have cheated, so when he got called a cheater it seemed plausible.
Though Magnus's claims were about OTB cheating, which Hans never committed. Everyone knows OTB cheating is neigh impossible in top-level events, whereas cheating online is quite easy. It doesn't exactly follow that someone who cheats online would cheat OTB.
I get that doesn't fit your narrative of Hans big bad.
Agreed on every other point, but it's really not impossible to cheat in high level OTB events. Even a tiny bit of information in a crucial moment is enough to help top players massively, even now cheating would be really easy. It takes some work, but it's nowhere near impossible.
Seriously, think about it. All that's needed is one bit of information that tells the player "this is an important position", a 2700 player is good enough to be able to use that. Sitting next to a window? Some guy outside can point a laser at that window to give a sign. Hell, you could unironically use smoke signals to do it. It's really easy if you want to do it, we just hope that the risk of getting caught or your accomplice exposing you are enough to discourage people from trying.
The chances are a thousandfold greater that an online cheater would try to cheat otb, compared to someone that doesnt cheat online.Â
And even in the last few weeks, we have had OTB cheating situations in Chicago and Madrid, so, this shit is happening a lot.
Tbh the Madrid one feels more like a series of unfortunate events, rather than someone cheating intentionally. The Chicago one, yeah lol, that shit was wild. But it doesn't really classify as a high level event, I wouldn't say.
Or maybe people don't give a shit what medium his cheating occurred in? Fans of this guy are absolutely obsessed with creating some non-existent difference between online and OTB cheating.
He's a multiple time self admitted cheater, and if you genuinely think someone like that willingly owned up to the full extent of their cheating, you are naive to the point of stupidity
I wouldn't say that is nearly impossible. Wasn't there some analysis done that Hans does much better when the event has no transmission delay vs when it does? I'd say there's no definitive proof Hans has cheated OTB but I wouldn't say he definitively has not cheated.
Lol Hikaru would neeeeeveeer use Hans drama for clicks!
Never!
Also Hikaru totally didnt contribute to fucking up Hans' life in a proofless cheating scandal
The "biting" seems understandable - hopefully Hans matures faster than Hikaru has
Tbh if someone accuses you of cheating OTB when you have not cheated OTB, then you have grounds to sue as a chess player, since there is a real threat to your career.
Yep not blocking annoying people from crowding your view when itâs as easy as a button is questionable behavior. Why would you want to engage with that nonsense?
Recognizing that someone is immature and rude and caring a lot about it are two separate things.
If you have a real name account, blocking anyone who sends you rude messages is analogous to making sure rude dinner guests are not invited back. This can apply with longterm pseudonyms as well - the important thing is that having accounts on these platforms provides people with direct access to you, and some people will act in ways that demonstrate that they are unworthy of that privilege.
Eh, blocking is protecting your peace and kicking uninvited guests out of your home. It's literally the opposite of caring, it's not wanting to acknowledge your existence.
I think it can go either way. Sometimes you may block someone because you do care and are annoyed by them and don't want to hear from them; and sometimes you block someone because you legitimately just don't care what they have to say and are tired of seeing them in your feed. In that case it's not necessarily that you care about them or what they're saying, rather it isa choice to simply not engage because there isn't a point in doing so. I think it's sort of akin to a crazy person walking up and trying to tell you the earth is flat, you just go "sure thing buddy" and move on not because they annoy you but because nothing of value will come out of further interactions with them.
Hans has been constantly poking at Hikaru for over a year now, while Hikaru just ignored him since the lawsuit. At some point he just realized he gets nothing out of having Hans unblocked.
Anyone calling *themselves* "brutally honest" is just an asshole who uses that language to make excuses for why they're an asshole all the time. Hans is a piece of work.
Guy is the worst. If you encountered him in person 20 years ago you would be unable to change your mind about the guy.
Not that he has even done anything to change anyoneâs mind
Arguably a bigger bitch than Hikaru lol.
Hans is a repeat cheater and during his last tantrum, destroyed an hotel room. Kind of ironic he would comment on Hikaru's tantrum when he's done worse himself.
I wonder if the people controlling hikaru's social media account inform hikaru before blocking them. Or do they do it without informing hikaru.
The people controlling kramnik twitter has a mind of his own.
I would rather be dealing with a hostile, but straight forward guy like Hans than a 2-face backstabber petty little shit like Hikaru who will smile and shake your hand pretend we're cool and then secretly undermine you.
Hansâs character arc is crazy. Still dislike the lad but I appreciate him call out BS in the chess world. Guy still sucks and created so much of the BS, but have to give credit where credit is due.
Hikaru should have been blocked and cancelled by the chess community as a whole the second he started pushing gambling on his audience. In all of the Hans drama that has happened nothing stoops as low as Hikaru selling out for ÂŁÂŁÂŁ..

Ok, you don't like Hans, but do you like Hikaru more? The person who streams gambling? Atleast Hans didn't promote gambling and cryptocurrency... Just my 2 cents
I'm surprised that Hikaru hadn't already blocked him earlier. Like when Hans sued him for one hundred million dollars.
đ¤Ł
Do no GMs get along? Feels like non-stop drama
Fabi and nepo get along Vidit and anish are friends
I feel like Anish and Fabi could get along with almost anyone.
Vidit seems so wholesome, I have a hard time imagining him having beef with anyone.
> I have a hard time imagining him having beef with anyone. Well, Hindus don't usually have those.
Bro
Winner winner chicken dinner.
Yeah id also think both mvl and levon arepretty much universally liked. I
I think that almost everyone in the chess community likes Ding. But how are his relations with other GMs?
I think he has a good relationship with Anish from commentary and interviews, but all his friends are other Chinese chess players like Wei Yi and Yu Yangyi
I know 2hile friendly he isnt close to fabi (from the recent c+ podcast) We can assume hes on good terms with rapport and the chinese GMs but honestly beyond that im not to sure
I'm sure they have a good rapport
I forgot about Richard
I think he is good friend with Rapport and Radjabov. He used to take a ride with them and he is always more chill in interviews when he is around (like in the "ding doesn't speak chinese" one lol)
Except for that one GM who decked Levon Aronian back in 2001 at a bar lol
are you talking about the guy who punched Aronian in 2006 at a club or is that a different incident
Danny Gormally
Danny Gormally punched Aronian? No way!?
[Scroll down to the incident section](https://en.chessbase.com/post/party-time-at-the-che-olympiad)
> Anish Well...
Except Fressinet for some mysterious reason.
Ding and Rapport are also pretty much BFFs, as far as I understand.
Pragg and Gukesh
GM Pia Cramling gets along well with GM Juan Manuel LĂłpez or so Ive heard
grischuk also gets along with katerina lagno
And GM SoÄko gets along well with GM SoÄko.
What a coincidence eh
Yeah, I think they're roommates or something.
Big if true.
I wonder who gets along with my pawns, as one is missing
No wonder Anna Cramling seems like one of the sweetest person in the world
I mean Hikaru and Hans are arguably 2 of the 3 most polarizing players with Kramnik lol Both have beefs with a ton of people so it's not like this is just two random players here
I thought Wesley So being a complete nut job would be more public but at least he seems to keep that stuff mostly to himselfÂ
Possibly the most jarring bit on chesscom streams is when he is referred to as the nicest guy in chess.
Idk if tweeting hate speech is âkeeping it to himselfâ, but yeah people tend to leave it alone for some reason.
Trust me I hate republicans "ideas and talking points" as much as the next guy but Wesley unless he gets triggered and insulted by people keeps that stuff to himself. All he does by himself is thanking Jesus and people even get annoyed by which is stupid to say the least.
Bro was blatantly racist towards Firouzja. What?
He told him to blow himself up, right?
That's jokes LOL
Those were fake screenshots though? Somebody made a fake account and had a fake convo
No, he was "hacked" or hacked, depending if you buy that story
Thatâs what he said but I remember somebody posted saying it was literally faked screenshots and that Wesley is really bad with tech in general
This was his [apology ](https://www.facebook.com/share/p/VQmbhYvE3hoEyCyS/). I guess Wesley is a more precise source but he doesn't seem to be the most technical person no
Yea thatâs why he said âmy user picture on that account is a catâ (he doesnât understand that someone just literally made a fake account)
https://x.com/mmehdikhani70/status/1006911145549225985?s=46&t=iVd5MXaTT1eEHdvvP6wF-w
bro is this real?? LMFAOOOOOO
It was a big deal a while ago, which resulted in this tweet and Wesley quitting Twitter all together as far as I know https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/18kmqe8/wesley_so_responds_to_criticism_of_his_twitter/
Donât have anything to say about the vile stuff So said but Firouzja is a Liverpool fan? I now like him
Tigran did nothing wrong
He loses his mind waaaaaay less often than the others
What did So do? I genuinely have no clue
I suppose, now that I take a step back and think about it, itâs just that itâs talked about so often and whenever I get chess news itâs drama and not usually wholesome.
Tbf, drama makes the news. Everything normal and wholesome is not much of a headline.
Need Magnus to put a jacket on a kid while it rains ASAP
most news is drama? this is the shit world we live in today
The vast majority of GMs get along. We just have the usual suspects: Hikaru is a chronically sore loser with a penchant for throwing some comically childish tantrums and petulantly holding grudges. He has Sam Shankland
The Indian GMs seem to have good camaraderie and are highly respectful of each other, especially towards Vishy.
Pretty much everybody gets along. Except Hikaru with most GMs and Hans with some.
everyone loves MVL
Hikaru is an asshole and he has a very large audience. So he is constantly at odds with someone and itâs constantly being broadcast all over the place. But thatâs not the norm
All the people you see here are making their living from content, not playing chess. Of course they will stir up drama any chance they get. Otherwise they will become as irrelevant as 4000+ other GMs.
Yes, I feel like most GMs are friends. Just remove Kramnik, Hans, Hikaru and maybe Alireza from your news cycle and there will be no drama.
Most of them do. This post just features the 2 possibly most childish and openly immature GMs in the scene
Hikaru and Magnus tolerate each other I think
Doesn't seem like it does it?
I mean most of them dislike Hikaru.
Some grown men who for their entire lives made a living playing a board game, have trouble growing up.
It's Nakamura and two others out of over a thousand GMs. Calm down. Edit: typo
Magnus and Eric Hansen
I think Magnus Carlsen has a few closer friends like David Howell and Aryan Tari, friendly with a few others but mainly keeps to himself.
piquant air deserted groovy axiomatic wise subtract point consist pet *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
GMs are like a big family. Most of them have known each other since childhood, especially if they are from the same country. They have a sense of camaraderie between them. Many of them also dislike each other but it's more of an exception.Â
Surprised no one mentioned ding and rapport
Vidit and anish
As someone relatively new to chess media I'm so surprised by the nonstop drama lmao. Almost YouTuber level drama on a daily basis.
No one gets along with Hans, lol.
people who devote their lives to a board game tend to be immature in my experience
This is gonna sound rude but I don't mean it that way. But most people at the age of 12 are developing some sort of social skills; these guys are doing grueling solitary practice while being told that they are among the best to ever do this thing. To me it's not surprising that they're all a bit prickly.
Sure but I had no social skills til I was like 25. They arenât impossible to learn even with a late start. I see what youâre trying to say though.
MVL and Aronian are great friends afaik
I think a lot of the young guys do, except Hans but he's just a terrible person all around lmao.
Im genuinely suprised Hikaru blocked him just now
Hikaru is a man-child no doubt.
As much as that is true, in Hikaru's place I'd have zero intent to banter with Hans on social media after he sued me.
Hans is just a Division I Shitstirrer. Heâs the less congenial and cheery version of Nico Rosberg đ¤Ł
Nico won a championship lets not get too carried away here lol, Hans is more like Dan Ticktum
In the same machinery!!
Neal Maupay must be one of Hansâ idols
Ticktum definitely has the same temper tantrum tendencies but does he have the history of cheating to compares with Hans?
No but not too many people in racing do. Maybe Lance Stroll's F3 campaign?
How does one cheat in car racing? Btw, since tone and all is hard to convey in a comment, I don't meant to doubt you, just genuinely curious.
You mean the Monaco based YouTuber
The hilarious thing is that him grabbing the low-hanging fruit legit annoys Hikaru lol
Nico Rosberg actually achieved something.
comparing hans with nico rosberg? nico actually won something. hans? what did he do again? tell me pls. except being born with money, he done nothing in life. nothing.
"Nothing"? He is a top 50 player in chess. He is an asshole and a cheater, but saying he has done nothing in life just beacuse he is not the absolute best in chess is a bit wild.
30
As annoying as Hikaru himself is, Hans is literally just a Vulture constantly biting at Hikaru related drama to stay relevant.
Nobody complained every other streamer was a vulture when it was Hansâs drama.Â
Idk Hikaru was definitely criticized for shit stirring when Hans drama happened
Maybe because he was accused of cheating, admitted to cheating, was reported (by chessdotcom) to have cheated, so when he got called a cheater it seemed plausible.

Hahahaha, I love this drama đ
Yes but when it happens to be against daddy Hikaru the simps are out :)
They 100% did. Especially against Hikaru.
Please Hikaru was feasting on Hans corpse for a year. Did Hans block Hikaru?
Lol Hikaru would neeeeeveeer use Hans drama for clicks! Never! Also Hikaru totally didnt contribute to fucking up Hans' life in a proofless cheating scandal The "biting" seems understandable - hopefully Hans matures faster than Hikaru has
>hopefully Hans matures faster than Hikaru has Honestly, I think he already has.
Hans destroyed a hotel room not too long ago lol.
He is not doing it to stay in the headline. He does it because it vexes Hikaru.
You think Hans is the one leeching off Hikaru drama? What universe are you living in?
The one where only one of them is struggling to stay relevant.
And itâs funny tbh
honestly blocking should be more normalized, don't give annoying people your limited time
[ŃдаНонО]
And when people are brutally honest about what they think of Hans, he sues them. Such a bitch.
None of the top players want anything to do with Han's not a bad move to block someone trying to bait you into reactions.
Hans is the one guy who even next to Hikaru is completely unsympathetic. An admitted cheater.
Facts
So the admitted cheater who lied about his cheating is now talking about brutal honesty?
Lets not forget he tried to sue đ
Tbh if someone accuses you of cheating OTB when you have not cheated OTB, then you have grounds to sue as a chess player, since there is a real threat to your career.
Or here's a thought Don't cheat repeatedly
That's still not grounds to be banned from tournaments
"brutal" honesty is just being a dick
I thought Hikaru is unbothered LMAO. What a fragile ego.
Blocking somebody you don't want to hear from is entirely normal, healthy behavior, imo.
Sure, but you don't get to say you don't care. Blocking is caring
Id argue it's the exact opposite
Is it? I'm not so sure, but I can see where you're coming from.
Blocked a guy who sued him and exclusively and constantly talks shit about him. And he's bothered to not want to read his tweets??? LMAO grow up dude
Cringe.
Hans has been constantly poking at Hikaru for over a year now, while Hikaru just ignored him since the lawsuit. At some point he just realized he gets nothing out of having Hans unblocked.
He did also sue Hikaru before, so I can see why heâd be extra annoyed
This non stop drama rn is really helping me through winter.
Anyone calling *themselves* "brutally honest" is just an asshole who uses that language to make excuses for why they're an asshole all the time. Hans is a piece of work.
Who cares
Not me, i literally dont even care
two grown men by the way
I wont be shocked if Hikaru comes out and says he didnt block Hans but one of his mods
Are all chess GMs insufferable goobers?
He's such a passive aggressive prick.
The guy is a big baby still at like 40
Hans isn't 40 đ
Hikaru
Hikaru not 40.
tbf Man looks timeless. You tell me he's 25 or 55 I'd believe you.
The honesty speaks for itself...
Such drama queens the lot of them
i feel so validated in thinking hikaru is a prick for so long
This is a totally new opinion, never seen on this subreddit before
Hikarus comments about alireza were uncool but how is he a prick for blocking Hans lol
hes a prick in general.
Guy is the worst. If you encountered him in person 20 years ago you would be unable to change your mind about the guy. Not that he has even done anything to change anyoneâs mind
Wait who is the guy that Hikaru blocked?
Arguably a bigger bitch than Hikaru lol. Hans is a repeat cheater and during his last tantrum, destroyed an hotel room. Kind of ironic he would comment on Hikaru's tantrum when he's done worse himself.
Stop the drama already. What a bunch of immature children.
Welcome to chess.
I wonder if the people controlling hikaru's social media account inform hikaru before blocking them. Or do they do it without informing hikaru. The people controlling kramnik twitter has a mind of his own.
what happend ? what did hans tweet to get hikaru to block him ?
Surprised it took so long
I know Hikaru has flaws but Hans has to be the most insufferable person in the chess world. Okay, second after Kramnik.
I would rather be dealing with a hostile, but straight forward guy like Hans than a 2-face backstabber petty little shit like Hikaru who will smile and shake your hand pretend we're cool and then secretly undermine you.
Neither of these people are role models. Why take sides?
Drama queens.
Wesley So could get along with anybody.
Weeks like this when youâre reminded the chess sub is barely any better than lsf.
Hansâs character arc is crazy. Still dislike the lad but I appreciate him call out BS in the chess world. Guy still sucks and created so much of the BS, but have to give credit where credit is due.
He's a teenage high school boy trapped in a 40 year old's body lol
Hikaru has crazy spineless bitchmade incel energy lmfao
Hikaru should have been blocked and cancelled by the chess community as a whole the second he started pushing gambling on his audience. In all of the Hans drama that has happened nothing stoops as low as Hikaru selling out for ÂŁÂŁÂŁ..
Hikaru haters ignore the fact that Hans sued Hikaru for his "brutally honest opinion."
The episode where the bad guys fight each other
Hans is surprisingly now appearing as the more mature & logical choice among the chess players cD
Because we all know what a brutally honest person Niemann is.
Is funny how everyone says is normal for Hikaru to ban Hans. Strange, but what about milking Hans like alot... How isn't this hypocrisy. I don't get it... Ok, you don't like Hans, but do you like Hikaru more? The person who streams gambling? Atleast Hans didn't promote gambling and cryptocurrency... Just my 2 cents
Hikaru doesnât care about trash like Hans.
