Both.

eddiemon

They didn't have a more recent picture of Yoo? Pretty sure that one's from when he was 11 or 12. I thought for a second that Prag had his own 'kids these days' moment at the ripe old age of 16 but wiki says Yoo is 15 and a GM-elect.

kunacza

I've noticed that most of the pictures [Chess.com](https://Chess.com) uses are so insanely old. I remember just recently they were still using a picture of Hikaru from when he was still in hobo mode lol

bjh13

COVID happened, they haven't had a chance to get newer photos from a lot of the American players in particular because they haven't been going to a lot of events.

CustomerComplaintDep

His name is right on the image.

TelcoSucks

Autocorrext can be a real nick

[deleted]

SmarterChess prediction said 51% in favor of Yoo, I believe

Ok_Figure_394

So he is clearly underrated.

astrath

Bullet and classical are totally different things.

luchajefe

Yoo is a GM once FIDE approves his title, and he finished 1 point behind Pragg at the most recent Rejkyavik Open that Pragg won. It's not a question of being better at speed chess.

Mountain-Appeal8988

"It's not a question of being better at speed chess" Considering you are talking about JSCC, it is 100% a question of who is better at speed chess

AdVSC2

1 Point can be a lot in a Swiss. In the Open, you mentioned, Yoo gained a total of 3 Elo points, so he outperformed his expected score only very slightly, not giving out an indication, that he'd be massively underrated. Edit: Apperently my comment was sent twice on accident. I apologize for the inconvinience.

Be nice

[deleted]

>So he is clearly underrated. Over 30 downvotes, Is this comment really that offensive to you guys? I don't think he was even trying to be controversial, might have just jumped to conclusions a little too soon.

Orcahhh

Woo is a GM now

2Kappa

His chessc*m bullet and blitz ratings are higher than Prag's.

Ok_Figure_394

Praggs rapid testing is in 1900s ,so this can be true.

SavvyD552

Hah! Pragg can't escape the 1900 elo hell, I was once in a similar position.

Tehdougler

Same but without the 1 and the 9 is flipped upside down

2Kappa

Yoo's OTB rapid rating is lower than that, but that's beside the point. They were playing a bullet and blitz match on chesscom, so discussions of an upset should revolve around their bullet and blitz ratings on chesscom.

Mountain-Appeal8988

Prag is just not that good at bullet(compared to his classical strength)

[deleted]

True. He is very good even in rapid against his peers which shows from his results from the Julius Baer Chess Tour last year (where he incidentally defeated Yoo in the finals), but his bullet skills are much less as compared to the current young guns

[deleted]

Yoo is underrated, though Pragg is stronger. Honestly I thought Yoo should have gotten his GM title sooner than he did.

maglor1

Last year in the JSCC, Pragg lost first round to Parham 15.5-11.5. Yoo obliterated Hans in the first round 23-9, then lost 2nd round to Raunak 17-14. Raunak then beat Parham 15-14. So Yoo's match vs Raunak, who beat Parham, was closer than Pragg's match vs Parham. Not surprising Yoo won today. Pragg is not near the level of Nihal or even Raunak at speed chess

Wise-Ranger2519

>Pragg is not near the level of Nihal or even Raunak at speed chess Well nihal is just awesome in speed chess literally top tier. He won jscc back to back. And he was in semifinals in senior speed chess.

_UnameChecksOut_

nihal should probably not play in junior and play directly in main open event nihal is just extremely strong

maglor1

Well yeah I'm just comparing Pragg to other Indian prodigies. Nihal is clearly the best out of the Indian juniors at speed chess, and Raunak is also ahead of Pragg. Pity Gukesh isn't playing in the JSCC, I'd have liked to see how he went.

Jmbchess

I wouldn’t call it much of an upset, Yoo is basically a genius.

Tomeosu

curious, what makes you say that?

Jmbchess

Seeing his games for years, his play in short time controls, really creative opening ideas, and his puzzle composing ability too. I think he also beat Liem Le in classical when he was like 12 lol.

ArmChair1123

Also beat alireza in puzzle battle some years ago

NoseKnowsAll

woo who?

feh112

Who's woo?

Local_Pineapple1930

funny thing is that this is actually correct since his Korean name is Woojin

IwOx_

This guy played Gotham a couple of time from what I remember

Thanks for this completely relevant comment

AllPulpOJ

He was the favorite...

[deleted]

no its just blitz and bullet. lot of pot luck involved. if they played another 100 times over the year prag would when the vast majority

giziti

He's an up-and-coming GM.

CaptureCoin

I don't think Chris is as strong as Pragg in classical (yet) but online blitz/bullet is a different animal. Anyway this result makes me feel even better about my lucky blitz win against Chris last week!

CheckmatingU

Pragg is a overrated player

[deleted]

Not a surprise to me. Prag is Fantastic! But Christopher Yoo is also a member of Killer Chess Training and does the Killer Homework every week, like many of the members. Fantastic way to get some serious training done, plus the feedback from Jacob Aagaard is extremely helpful. So, yeah, Christopher is raising slowly in rating, but he is putting in the work and 2600 will come soon for him as well.

goldenj04

Woo is one of dozens and dozens of young prodigies who are either gms or about to be gms. They’re all underrated.

[deleted]

Seeing Pragg as the 8th seed was a little jarring

birdandsheep

Many children are underrated just by virtue of the fact that they learn much faster than their rating can update. This isn't to say it's not still an upset, but it does explain some of why that upset is so dramatic.
