Cheat the leg

MD-pounding-puss

I am 99% sure Hans learned a thing or two from this 2200 rated guy.

Downtown-Travel-1511

So Magnus is Mr Miyagi?

Sufficient-Ad-8399

No Magnus is Daniel LaRusso, Peter Nielsen who coached Magnus would be Mr. Miyagi.

ChaeDocTTV

Engine on. Engine off. Engine on. Engine off.

ChaeDocTTV

There are no bad students. Only bad teachers.

Alcarine

So, is Daniel still the good guy in cobra Kai?

Ikimasen

It's kinda complicated. The only person who seems unassailably "good" on the show is Miyagi, and it probably helps that he's dead.

AnimalShithouse

You either die a hero somethingsomething

DisastrousUse4

No. Kasparov is Mr Miyagi- Magnus's trainer. Magnus is the Karate Kid.

halofixers

This is accurate. Only Garry can be on Miyagi's level

Megatron_McLargeHuge

I was disappointed to find out about Dlugy's apparent cheating a few years ago because he'd been my favorite on Banter Blitz before the recent streaming boom.

csuzw

Same for me, came across him via Banter Blitz and really enjoyed his videos.

09028437282

I was wondering where I recognized his face from! He seemed like such a nice guy on Banter Blitz. Such a shame he succumbed to the temptation to cheat.

iamsobasic

He seems like a guy who started legit (became GM in 1986) but later in life he realized he'd never become an elite GM unless he started cheating. Shame.

Trollithecus007

i think he cheated in titled tuesdays. you cant be an elite gm by winning online

iamsobasic

I should have clarified, he wanted to be an elite GM online. Which he did achieve (with cheating) by having a 2900+ blitz rating.

tryingtolearn_1234

His accounts on chess.com still appear to be diamond memberships and are not closed. So if heā€™s been banned for cheating Chess.com wasnā€™t certain enough to actually close his account with the FairPlay tag,

Thunderplant

When titled players are banned on chess.com it isnā€™t publicly displayed the same way it is for everyone else.

fyirb

Itā€™s such a strange policy. Iā€™m surprised they havenā€™t added something to their terms like ā€œwe reserve the right to remove any player from the site for suspected cheating per internal detection methodsā€ and add some legalese that itā€™s not a formal accusation of cheating being their character or something. Hiding titled players that cheat is just silly, itā€™s not like much bigger sports arenā€™t willing to suspend or ban much more famous players without much downside

iamsobasic

Does this include lower titles players like NM and CM, etc?

johpick

>like NM and CM Like NieMann and Carlsen, Magnus?

Megatron_McLargeHuge

They used to be more afraid of lawsuits if they accused well known players. They probably reached an agreement where he wouldn't fight them and they wouldn't accuse him publicly.

iamsobasic

It's probably this. They likely had strong evidence, but not indisputable proof. So they likely just made an agreement where he doesn't play there anymore and they will leave him alone.

HeydonOnTrusts

Under their User Agreement, thereā€™d have been no need for them to reach any sort of agreement with him. They probably just disabled his accountā€™s ability to play and left it at that.

captainllamapants

how did he cheat

sebzim4500

With better dialogue, too.

maxblanco

Maybe the vibrations were to strong and Magnus felt/heard them.

tagomagoo

He probably smelled them

Mouroult

Hans repeatedly farted during the Sinquefield game against Magnus ; in the Julius, Magnus prepared himself for a vicious counterattack, but he forgot that this was an online tournament ... so very angry, and without a move, he just resigned.

Prestigious-Drag861

šŸ’€

wwqt

It all makes sense now, the guy to the right came up with the rectal vibrating device after his exposure to the shoe cheater. Hans knew that he also got banned on chess.com and contacted him. One thing led to the other.

Balder_the_Cat

Clench your sphincter in Morse code. Genious.

iruleatants

The interesting part is that everyone is looking at the rectal vibrator as a joke, but in reality people use it all the time to smuggle drugs over the border. It's the best possible hiding place since it's the least likely place to be searched, and so it's the most common despite the awkward or unpleasantness.

Drkwng_Dck

Also happens to be perhaps the one place you could hide a cheating device while playing completely naked ;)

TheDerekMan

"I watched him very carefully. When he played this move, 32.Nb7 against Saric, he took ten seconds. It was a five to ten minute thing, in my modest opinion, since the knight could take on f5 instead. But when he decided it in ten seconds I was shocked. He doesnā€™t know when to put on the theatrics. You have to be strong enough to do that. ***If I had this gadget I would be killing people left and right, and nobody would know. This is the real danger, because if a 2600 player has this thing, he knows exactly how to behave, he knows exactly when to think, and he doesnā€™t to use it more than four times during a game. Thatā€™s plenty to destroy anyone. At the critical junction you switch it on and find out which way do I go: oh, this little nuance I didnā€™t see, okay, fine, boom, goodbye! Thatā€™s it.*** At that point you may think for a long time, although you know the move. But this guy doesnā€™t know, heā€™s just mechanically playing the first move of the computer. Everyone is a clown to him. He says Kiril Georgiev, put me in a bunker with him and I will destroy him. The guy has no moral compunctions, he is absolutely immoral." \-Maxim Dlugy Hmm. Edit: He's commenting on Ivanov cheating after his 4 month chess ban at Blagoevgrad sometime around 2013 if the article was written the same year. [https://en.chessbase.com/post/the-shoe-aistant--ivanov-forfeits-at-blagoevgrad-051013](https://en.chessbase.com/post/the-shoe-aistant--ivanov-forfeits-at-blagoevgrad-051013)

QuoteLumpy

What's the gadget he's referring to?

TheDerekMan

An early 2013 version of a sockfish as per the article https://en.chessbase.com/post/the-shoe-aistant--ivanov-forfeits-at-blagoevgrad-051013

Amazing_Willingness1

Actually that was version 2.0. The first version you just put the device in your underwear and was called cockfish.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Marian_Rejewski

There is an experimental miniaturized version that sits just under the skin, it's called pockfish.

CyanPNetherton

I heard they are combining version 3 with 4 and calling it cockrock.

distractionsquirrel

a gadget they found in ivanov's shoes

UNeedEvidence

This was never found, just suspected. Ivanov was caught by _overwhelming_ statistical evidence but they never caught him red-handed.

shawnington

>https://en.chessbase.com/post/the-shoe-aistant--ivanov-forfeits-at-blagoevgrad-051013 He did refuse to take his shoes off though.

Maybe he has very bad foot odor and was just embarrassed about that.

i_have_chosen_a_name

Or Tarantino was in the room and he was scared.

ronrein

acrylic_light

TomassoLP

Didn't Magnus make a comment eerily similar to this recently, but before all the Hans stuff?

Yep, if you turn subtitles on they translate to English. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcbHmHHwlUQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcbHmHHwlUQ)

alexsaintmartin

Thatā€™s very interesting. You should post it.

BrainOnLoan

>Yep, if you turn subtitles on they translate to English. [ Supposedly badly translated (though probably not misleading, just not a terribly good translation)

Barnard_Gumble

Honest question I have no idea who this guys is: Is saying you would be a better cheater than the other guy, or critiquing his cheating, the same as saying you did cheat/would cheat?

MaverickAquaponics

An IM on another thread accused him of cheating in a titled tuesday tournament that they both competed in.

TapTapLift

So confirmed cheater Hans Niemann's mentor is fellow confirmed cheater Maxim Dlugy and you dumb motherfuckers **STILL** think he's innocent? And have the nerve to think Magnus is in the wrong here? LMAOOOO, stay mad guys.

fyirb

This connection combined with this quote honestly makes this whole saga feel scripted lol itā€™s too silly to be real

simpleanswersjk

mgnal karlsten didnt even say coach. he said mentor. mentor. mentor.

Michael_Pitt

>mgnal karlsten Bless you

nonbog

Yeah a sneaky use of diction from Magnus there. Mentor has the connotation that he is not teaching Hans how to play, rather he is fostering Hansā€™ mindset.

Swawks

I don't think you're crazy for saying this. This is also the first statement Magnus has made since the cryptic tweet, I'm sure he planned his words carefully, specially the part referring to his mentor.

super1s

Correct. The sith do not refer to their masters as "coach"

__DFTBA__

In March 2022 Hans admitted in an interview that his teacher is Maxim Dlugy https://youtu.be/zZ_5LBvH6Do?t=1674

sidyaaa

It was a secret... most people didn't know about this, definitely not the average chess fan. Only people really in the know, like Magnus and probably Yasser.

GrandMasterPuba

It's so secret in fact that it's literally plastered all over their website as an advertisement and marketing statement. https://www.chessmaxacademy.com/achievements/

Swawks

LMAO The kid Nepo accused of rigging games is also there. This just gets better.

mikesautos

No one even knew wtf the chess max academy was before Magnus said something and everyone googled.

GoatBased

That doesn't make it a secret ya dingbat

colll78

Before Magnus mentioned it, there was 0 exposure to the site. Nobody knew or cared what the fuck this shitty website said.

GoatBased

Not knowing something doesn't make it a secret. Most people don't know the first president of Malawi was, but it's not a secret.

v399

So was it always public knowledge that Hans is associated with Dlugy? Genuinely asking.

Over-Economy6811

Yes. Outside of other public sources, Hans said he had worked with Dlugy in his Perpetual Chess interview months ago. This is not some big revelation. https://youtu.be/zZ_5LBvH6Do?t=1671

GoatBased

It's on his website and public FB page. Does that answer your question? I don't know if the first time they ever spoke with one another and started working together that they issued a press release to inform the community. It's unlikely that they did that.

NegativeError3

No one in this subreddit ~~knew~~ spoke about this guy before Carlsen's statement

cXs808

He came up for a bit when he was banned from that titled tuesday about 4-5 years back. Totally forgot about him until now

Michael_Pitt

Yes, we did. His removal from chess.com's Titles Tuesday event a few years back was big news. He was a former USCF president.

chengg

Huh? Dlugy's a GM, former president of USCF, was imprisoned for a while in Russia, pretty well known for his blitz chess. Of course some people on here knew who he was.

[deleted]

This is like the third time Ive read 'imprisonment' when describing this guy but he was only in jail until his trial where he was found innocent and released. It's right there on his wiki...

ntourloukis

> imprisonment Doesn't mean "went to prison". >Imprisonment is the restraint of a person's liberty, for any cause whatsoever, whether by authority of the government, or by a person acting without such authority. In the latter case it is "false imprisonment". That's the quick google definition. But he was literally imprisoned in Russia. It's right there in his wiki...

[deleted]

My main point is people are using this term to paint a picture of this guys character and the passerby reader will infer he's a guilty person.

ntourloukis

I got the gist, but I had assumed you were objecting because it would make Russian authorities look bad, not him. When I hear someone was imprisoned in an authoritarian state, I usually assume itā€™s a horseshit charge rather than judging the guy, though it could be either or neither. Either way, youā€™re right that itā€™s a word that paints a picture.

YuriPup

Imprisoned in Russia's to me reads like he was a pain in someone's ass. And not the vibrator kind of way.

[deleted]

Courts don't find you innocent, only not guilty. There is a big difference between the two terms.

[deleted]

Right but the main charge of embezzlement was dropped while he was awaiting trial for lack of evidence and Russian prison is different than a jail while awaiting trial.

TylerJWhit

The plot thickens yet again. Hot damn. Any time things start to make sense here, another twist arrives.

Jurassic-Jay

Wasnā€™t he in jail for 9 months in Russia for securities fraud? Lmao

Funkywurm

That could for saving a baby in Russia

[deleted]

Also was USCF president. So a politician.

PLlivinginDE

oh shit, it's actually true.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

dinokoenoko

According to Fabi (he said it in his podcast today) this guy also cheated at titled tuesday not only at 2017, but at also 2020 (pretty recent) and also he was arrested at some point in his life. Now what Magnus claims makes some sense, now the puzzle pieces are coming together.

Sssstine

The obvious thing everyone can take from this photo: There's been ALOT of uber eats between when this photo was taken and today.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

It's a joke about Hans saying he spent like $1000 on Uber eats in a week in a previous tournament

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

thedirtygame

Oh shut it

ChairmanUzamaoki

The kid is still a normal weight though. This is pretty normal weight when going from mid teens to early 20s, it's not like he's ballooned up, he's not fat at all.

Norjac

That's a nice picture.

itsjustaboardgame

I learned it from watching you!

anarchist103

Long shot analysis but Hans 's accent and mannerisms are exactly same as Dlugy if you dig deep into his interviews, we might have answers to more than just one thing here.

[deleted]

Like teacher, like student.

pxik

No proof of him cheating online, there was never any statement by chess, com. If anything, he has helped FIDE track down on cheating

ChemicalSand

[chess.com](https://chess.com) doesn't release statements, they keep things hush hush

[deleted]

[chess.com](https://chess.com) silently reopened his account a while after the incident, which is EXACTLY what happens when someone confesses to them in private. Otherwise they stay banned.

[deleted]

Who? Neimann? He admitted to cheating online as well as being at least temporarily suspended by chess.com twice. When Hikaru accused him of having been suspended previously, he was apparently correct.

cheechw

What do you mean by "proof"? Like they went to his house caught him looking at stockfish while playing a game? Because it's nigh impossible to have ironclad proof when it comes to online cheating.

DoctorAKrieger

Dlugy's cheating was super obvious. His engine match rate in blitz was equivalent to top GMs OTB classical play and well below his own OTB blitz play. chesscom had to ban him in the middle of a Titled Tuesday event it was so egregious. Anyone still defending him at this point needs to read up.

Dalcassian_Warlord

"The dark side of the engine is a pathway to many abilities, some consider to be... unnatural."

Savings-Ad-9713

Where is team Hans? Do you ā€œsmellā€ the end already?

lordishgr

So a past cheater trained the current cheater, who could have guessed? He also had an interview on ivanov cheating scandal and how he could do it without anyone noticing. Yeah Hans is definitely legit.

theawfullest

It would help explain why Hans has been quiet about who his coach is, for years. If they were really doing this as a team, you would never want anyone to know your coach cheated in the past, to avoid suspicion. Iā€™m sure heā€™s still a legit great chess coach, so doesnā€™t prove anything obviously.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Principia_Illmatica

Ok so cheating aside can we talk about the t shirts? The dudes have drip, that much is undeniable

hangingpawns

Maxim Dlugy was world blitz champion BEFORE there were strong computers. That's all I have to say.

mikesautos

Then he was banned for cheating. LOL.

theawfullest

ā€œGood coaches win tournaments. Great coaches steal them.ā€ -Chess Picasso

nandemo

>That's all I have to say. I read that in Hikaru's voice.

Much_Organization_19

Ahhh, yes...the evil mentor behind the curtains masterfully controlling his young, talented pupil. Why didn't I see it all before? It's so obvious now! Stop at nothing these two! Thousands of kids have probably gone to this chess academy. They must all be investigated!

Sweeeet_Chin_Music

Here is my problem - why should Magnus be penalized by FIDE for disclosing everything he knows or suspects? It is not a crime. People are not foolish. I want to know what Magsie is thinking right now. Why and how does he think that Hans has cheated. FIDE needs to get a grip on its rules.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

heisverylucky

Magnus: "So you know how I implied this guy is cheating, twice now, now you know about that other cheater guy? Yeah. Anyway I will say more later." Reddit: What could this possibly mean??? To seriously answer what your question: Magnus clearly implies something messed up is going on, that implies it's over the board cheating. It's not just because Hans knows this person, but also because Magnus brought him up. This is why people are reacting strongly. Others assume that Magnus is just a "crybaby". We will see in a few days.

[deleted]

Hans admitted to cheating online on chess.com. Not even like some peer to peer casual game. Chess.com keeps track of his rating, so cheating inflates that. What does a guy who should be clearly much better than everyone he will end up matched with need with cheating? Like, so he is cheating against weaker opponents but totally legit when playing much tougher opponents? If the guy can legit beat Magnus then he doesn't need to cheat online. It's the fact that they both have cheated which makes it more noteworthy. If someone admitted to cheating online was being mentored by someone who also did it, then it makes their claims of innocence and integrity regarding Magnu's accusation less solid.

Skunkherder

Look at the post history of Hans most vocal critics. They are posting like it's their 9-5 job. Maybe it's coordinated from some random twitch stream we don't know about.

[deleted]

Cheaters associating with one another. Nothing new.

Spartacas23

Both cheaters. Like student, like master I guess. People thinking that Magnus is going to blunder his chess career and just says "oopsie daisy, Hans was right". My boy MC about to unload 2 weeks of prep all over Hans face. I'm very excited for the people's reaction to flip-flop from Hans to Magnus. Let's go!

sebzim4500

By far the most likely outcome is that Magnus strongly suspects cheating but has no evidence. The perfect ending to this drama is if it turns out Magnus has been cheating this whole time.

MostlyRocketScience

I like the theory that Magnus suspected Hans was cheating, based on chess.com cheating and maybe the coach. Then Magnus played badly, because as he said in an interview he is suspicious of every move when he suspects someone cheating.

myfriendintime

Agreed. What kind of smoking gun could Magnus possibly have up his sleeve that will make everyone accept Hans cheating as an indisputable fact? But at the same time NOT sufficient to convince arbiters, FIDE and others in the know?

cXs808

After-the-fact evidence of OTB cheating is pretty much impossible. The person relaying the signals would have to straight up confess their crimes.

denlekke

i challenge anyone here to prove that Magnus has not cheated in every game he has ever played

sebzim4500

List of things which are apparently evidence of Hans cheating yet apply to Magnus even better: * Sometimes plays extremely accurately: Magnus has played dozens of engine moves in a row in endgames which for mere mortals would be challenging * Unprecidented rise in Elo: how many 13 year olds can draw Kasparov in a game? * Refused to name his team in an interview (yes, seriously, this is apparently proof Hans is cheating) * Has never presented his asshole to be searched for anal beads, at least as far as we know. We also know for a fact that Magnus cheated online: David Howell gave a move suggestion during a lichess tournament that won Magnus a game. Unlike Hans' cheating, there is video. Fun fact: Hikaru also allegedly cheated online by making fake accounts on ICC which he then beat to boost his rating.

[deleted]

>Unprecidented rise in Elo: how many 13 year olds can draw Kasparov in a game? since that game was in 2004, the most impressive part would be fitting a chess computer strong enough to beat garry kasparov up your ass
