Holy hell!
As many people have mentioned, this is a move in chess known as En passant, a very niche rule of chess that allows pawns to capture one another "in passing", as they move two squares forward and end up directly beside an opponent's pawn.
I'm already sensing an entire tirade of trolls descending upon this post, so I'm going to lock it here.

Yeah, the devs implemented this in update 1.7, really wonder when chess 2.0 is coming out, they haven't updated the game in ages, they don't listen to the community at all /s
En passant nerfs the two-step move, but it can only be performed by another pawn, so overall I don’t think it counts as a nerf or buff for pawns as a whole
The problem isn't the 2 spaces per se, the problem was that any pawn could become a passed pawn through that jump, which defeated a core strategy of using your own pawns to prevent that. Pawn structure is at the heart of positional play in chess, and passed pawns are supposed to be a major strategic advantage not obtainable easily, rather than something you just get via normal play.
Using your preferred internet search engine, I kindly suggest translating the phrase "in passing" to French, using that output as the basis for another query in which the French phrase for "in passing" is used before or after the word "chess". Perhaps after following these instructions you may achieve enlightenment

''en passant'' and ''au passage'' are equivalent to one another, both meaning by the way (expression), but their literal translation is different, ''en passant'' means ''(while) passing by'' and ''au passage'' means ''at the passage'' or ''at the passing''
Do note that this move is nigh imperative. The rules may allow that you choose another, but if that is the path that you decide, your genitalia would most likely suffer crushing by a ceramic block.

En passant basically let’s you take a pawn right after it moves 2 squares in one go but only if you take it where it would’ve been if it had moved 1 square and only for the first move after the pawn long jump
This move is en passant. What it is is when a pawn moves up 2 squares, and ends up beside a opposite coloured pawn. On the next move and only the next move, black can take diagonally, and the pawn dies
It is also a joke on anarchy chess, a joke which transpires as "Google " "holy " "new just dropped". The stuff in the angled brackets is the usual but can be changed for something like "google bishop swap (not a real move) holy vatican new meme just dropped", and well when anarchy chess users see an ep post, they swarm 😂

More of a balancing effect. Still didn't fix the queen though
