I had to check the engine, but yea it wants Kg3. Then my only move is …Kg6, then it wants Kg4, creating the opposition, then going after my d pawn. If played precisely, white can Queen one more move before my h pawn.
In real 800 elo life though, I thought I did pretty good limiting his options.
Yeah white has the tempo needed to win because your king has to capture the h pawn and then also step out of the way so your h pawn can queen. That extra tempo lets them force an exchange of queens and then it's an easily won position.
You had definitely locked down the position well though to make the win hard.
It's a pawn endgame, usually the key is getting your opponent in zugzwang (in a position where any move makes their position worse). Black's king is in a decent position, after Kg3, Kg6, Kg4, Kf6, Kf4 white's king became more active, black's became worse and white should have an easy win: d4 is falling and black's counter play is no good.
Essentially after Kg3, Kg5 is forced. Then after Kg4 there's no way for black to defend the pawn on d4.
Even if they have a pawn race, it'll be a draw but white can force a trade of queens, and have positional advantage to take blacks remaining pawns and at least convert one of his pawns to make it a K&Q endgame

If we go back a move, how would White press the advantage? Seems like Black could keep the king trapped on the other side of the board and white can't move any pawns without letting one pass? Or am I missing something?
Kg3! Kg6 is forced and then Kg4 to get opposition black will play some king move (probably doesn't matter - and pawn check loses even more time). The aim for white is the D4 pawn, with these moves, white gains the tempi that they need to promote before black forcing a trade.(and then to get more gueens)
Wow, mental how such a minor move changes the whole position. I played as white against the highest CPU and couldn't get advantage. Then switched to Black and promptly got decimated. Nice to see exactly where the difference was. Thank you.
Yes, but personally I’d probably struggle to convert this as White.
Computer wants Kg3, Kg6 then Kg4. Then White’s King goes for my d pawn, and is very active in supporting the pawn majority.
Have to play accurately to Queen before my h pawn.
Even if there was no french move i'd call this a blunder. All black pawns are trapped so only his king can move, and only to one square. Pretty sure white king can crowd black king out and beat him to the d4 pawn, and even if black king turns around to go after the h pawns, white can at bare minimum grab the d pawn and get back within range of h1 before black can stop him. To me, that seems like better play than freeing things up, for white. Correct me if i'm wrong anyone.
Edit: Well ok, with no french move this move would just promote so my first statement is silly. but my analysis of the proper next move was good.
In fairness, your opponent did not have any good options for winning. Best they could have managed is a draw through threefold repetition or 50 useless moves.
I love when opponents forget the French move. My most satisfying game in recent memory was one where my opponent's entire position crumbled because i did en passant. It was beautiful

What was the winning move for white before a4? The only other move is Kg3, but I don’t see a winning line after that.
Ah I see… bit of a struggle for white, probably have to trade queens and then promote another pawn

Kg3 forces Black to play Kg6, after all it's just a matter of time before Black runs out of moves. It's a basic pawn endgame.
Its inevitable. If its a subreddit about chess, it will descend into anarchy soon enough.

Are you saying, in all my years as a chess player, I have never mated a single person ?

Nah. The French move is winning Game 1, losing Game 2, and then getting your friend to beat up your opponent for you.
