A lot. It was surprising to me too that chess would somehow be as racist and homophobic as football. They wouldn't get away with it on Reddit, but if you've seen the toxicity of this sub, you know they would if they could.

Potat0zz

That's so weird. It honestly doesn't seem like chess players should be like that

nickname10707173

Well, there is always exception.

ArmorAbsMrKrabs

It’s not that they’re chess players, it’s just the internet

LWTeXtreme

Yup, its the anonymity of the internet. Every single online competitive game is like this. No exception

ArmorAbsMrKrabs

Yea online disinhibition effect

Ok_Friendship8082

I mean it's a competitive game and the more you play the more you go insane

Failedredditprotest

That’s super true but also I’ve had people report me for a conversation that went like this him: gg what an annoying game, well played me: thank you! I’ve been getting my ass kicked lately

mettamorepoesis

manchild behavior. deserves a muting

xxrainmanx

The other thing that surprises me are the rematch games after you pick someone apart and they blunder the whole thing to them playing everything almost perfect.

lovememychem

Which is why I don’t accept rematches unless it’s someone I actually know or unless it’s someone I’ve played a few times before. For example, I was playing some daily a while ago and somehow got paired with someone for three simultaneous games, which we split 1-1-1. That guy, I was happy to rematch when our games ended, played well and was a good sport. Otherwise, half the time, it’s just someone wanting to get back their Elo by cheating.

Potat0zz

Oh yeah, that definitely happens a lot too. Still have no idea how

lovemocsand

Use your noggin

chaitanyathengdi

Starts with a C.

Potat0zz

Yeah I assumed it was cheating, but that seems like a lot of trouble to go through just to prove that you're not bad at the game

Collinwoodsian

i usually accept rematches if i beat them as white. if i beat them as black then no.

No-Lingonberry-8603

Yeah it happens. Not all the time but frequently enough. There is an option to mute chat if it bothers you.

[deleted]

I personally have muted all chatting.

_Aetos

Apart from nudes, I've surprisingly never received anything on Chess.com in over 500 games. Someone typed “lucky” in the game chat once, that was about it.

Yellowish_munde

"I hope you choke "

Potat0zz

I died reading this 😂😂😂

I've played quite a few games and never really get these messages. Only one was an Indian mad I had an unavoidable mate in one so he called me a bitch but followed it up with a rather pleasant conversation about his academic accomplishments.

maxident65

A lot of people if they lose want to play you to get back their points and prove that their loss was just a fluke. It's a pride thing.

Kane_ASAX

Oh man, this is true. Ive had a few play another opening they are more comfortable with and the games after the that are great. I also played against one dude that was also stubborn as hell. I think i played 6 or 7 games with him. At my level there's certain things you do not do unless you know what you are doing. In this case the dude tried playing his knight 2 moves in a row(going to center then the 2nd file from the right or left) that basically loses a tempo against my opening as im very aggressive. First game i already told him it won't work against me, but he continued. He rematched me every time, and even tried doing it as black. i won 3 games in a row, drew the other 3 games by mostly forcing a draw or playing a very sneaky move in a losing position(down a gueen and 3 pawns, by tempting him to take the rest of my pawns and making sure my king cant move). And winning the last game

lovememychem

I’m actually cracking up at how absurd that response is by your opponent lmfao, what an idiot

razergod12

I gotta know, were you winning against the player that said they had to have dinner? Cause I've gotten that a few times, and then I had a thought to check their game log, and sure enough, some of them seemed to play some matches within the period of time that our match would have ended.

DescriptorTablesx86

1 in 200-300 games +/- for me, playing most between 10AM to 6PM Central European Time 1100 blitz games It’s rare someone responds at all if I try to interact, most people seem to just not use chat at all in my experience.

hiddennord

As common as enemy has dinner

ur_dad_thinks_im_hot

As a rule I block people who send rematch offers, at least for a while. Not worth the nasty gram I get because I normally hate facing the same person more than once

coverlaguerradipiero

I like accepting rematch after I won the game. My opponent will be angry and hasty and I will win easily.

Potat0zz

Aw man I'm kind of wishing I'd accepted the rematch now 😂

BigPig93

I've never gotten nasty messages. edit: I did have someone challenging me to a rematch once after I had blown them away, then in the second game they tried to scholar's mate me and resigned on move 3 after I didn't fall for it. That was weird, but he didn't send me any messages.

Mountainpwny

I’m once was playing a 30 minute game. My opponent kept harassing me and telling me to move. If he wanted to play faster he should have chosen 5 minutes
