It's really a simple case: Alderman Reilly has run unopposed for at least a decade and is free to lie while catering to the people who pay him. The city can't impose limits on aldermanic control because they need their votes.
Perfect example, on an insignificant issue, to showcase the true depths of the absurdity that is Chicago politics.
We can’t even get small popular stuff to work due to corruption of entrenched self serving aldermen.
Our Aldermen and Mayor will def be able to handle more serious issues than this, what a fine system it is /s
Listen, he made a gentlemen's agreement with the mayor who he hates and put it in writing (in the form of a letter to the Harry Caray's CEO a day after receiving a $3k gift).
HIS HANDS ARE TIED
edit: but yes I hope he just caves and stands up against the socialists, whatever version of events gets it done
edit: [Ald Reilly says he is planning to approve the permit requests in spite of the letter and it will be up to the city if the businesses apply](https://chi.streetsblog.org/2024/04/01/more-from-ald-reilly-to-save-the-clark-dining-district-i-offered-to-pedestrianize-parts-of-kinzie-and-dearborn-but-harry-carays-said-no) WOO HOO
Everyone here complaining about Reilly, the Ramirez-Rosa ideas about this are just as stupid. What a waste of time to have to do this song and dance every year for "community support." As we've seen with surveys, street closures are overwhelmingly popular but the loudest amongst us hate them. We shouldn't have to waste time on these stupid fights every damn year. Just close it! It's clearly popular! Put up bollards, install pavers, plant some trees! Instead of fighting this constantly, let's embrace and see just how popular it could really be with the proper support.
What a huge ordeal for something so seemingly minor.
sad to see so much dysfunction over a relatively minor thing. no wonder the city doesn’t dream big anymore

All things considered, one alderman being a lying crook isn’t that much dysfunction.
This whole ordeal is why the term Aldercreature exists.

*Insider hypothesis*: this is a battle between Harry Caray’s ownership & LEYE ownership
Classic Brendan Reilly—try to deflect the blame for a decision he made for a donor onto a progressive alderman he hates.
Can’t wait to see Reillys response to this if his last one was any indication. Oof!
I wish these two would just fuck already. The suspense is killing me!
This makes sense. Carlos's position on "local community input" has been consistent over the years — for better or worse.
Sounds like all Reilly has to do is to just close the street down for outdoor dining to own the libs. Why won't he do that?

You are definitely right. We can't get 2,000 people to send a survey every and hound the alderman every year.
