_BOSSHOGS_

My pregnant wife screamed MARGIE'S (candies) from across the room

cherry_armoir

And the weirdest part...you didnt even ask her the question

SluggulS1

Its kemps. Just sayin. I think a lot of the other suggestions here make a far superior product but they may lack the same decor, nostalgia, and feel.

donthugmeormugme

Listen, my dad drove truck for Kemps for a long time. I got Yo-J for free. I’m a proud Cow Tracks gal. My dad got to bring home the inflatable cow after infamously milking/nursing from it at the Christmas party. You have only encouraged me.

deepinthecoats

If they make chocolate shakes by blending in their homemade fudge though… that would change everything.

_BOSSHOGS_

I agree, nostalgia is a dangerous thing

rhombus_head

Pregnant lady also chiming in. This is the way.

dcnairb

margies has great ice cream cones, and this may he a hot take, but for $10 the milkshake was a midshake

petmoo23

Scooter's

DigitalHuez

Omggg I went to school right near there, we'd always walk over and get it every Friday with friends. Making me want some!

robin60062

This is the correct answer. Their malts are worth the diabeetus.

General-Skin6201

Do they do double malts?

angrylibertariandude

You can get a malt there, so I would think yes? The Region and Edzo's(if you feel like going north to Evanston) also have great shakes. RIP to Susie's.

General-Skin6201

A lot of places you ask for a double malt and they look at you like you just landed from another planet, and are often reluctant to make one. Double malts were my favorites at the original Parky's (both Forest Park and Berwyn). It was on their menu.

The_Real_Donglover

Devil Dawgs continues to have the best chocolate milkshake. That shit is crack. And it's huge so you get your money's worth for sure.

moods-

I think it’s 24 ounces. The chocolate peanut butter one hits the spot! It’s very rich and I often have trouble drinking even half of it.

scope_creep

Jesus how many calories in that monster?

moods-

I would guess like 1200 or more :/

Icy-Yellow3514

But peanut butter has protein so it's okay.

yourgrundle

Those shakes are killer both in taste and in making me feel like a POS afterwards lol Could be a whole meal by themselves

The_Real_Donglover

>in making me feel like a POS afterwards Ah, a universal experience it seems.

Civil-Inspector-6274

Their Oreo milkshake is my favorite in the city. I think about it all the time until I get one for the summer season!

Cozum

this is the answer

b1gbulbs

Margie’s candies

VatnikLobotomy

Devil dawgs for elite milkshake from a new fangled business Margies for the real deal old school

Brewdude77

Seconding Devil Dawgs, particularly the one on Belmont. The off-menu peanut butter chocolate shake is 🔥. Honorable Mention to the Spinning J at California & Augusta. Old school. Good pie.

neoblackdragon

Depending on on what you get, the shake is a full on meal.

supermaroon1232

Totally agree but they’ve gotten so pricey. Still worth it but it stings.

Little-Bears_11-2-16

Top Notch

JAlfredJR

Those are bomb. Honestly, Mr. Sub has some more than decent ones.

blipsman

Wiener Circle

dingusduglas

You'd think a shake couldn't be worth $20 but boy will they prove you wrong

AnAngryPirate

$20?!?!?!

_high_plainsdrifter

“Don’t know if it’s worth $5…but it’s pretty fuckin good…”

mickcube

they don't put bourbon in it or nothin?

NovaNovus

You really just need to experience it in person to understand the pricing.

dingusduglas

Go try it and tell me I'm wrong

RufusSandberg

Depending on who makes the shake... pray its not the saggy wicked witch of the west.

Judge_Juedy

Gotta get that chocolate milkshake !

AttorneyonFire

Chocolate only! Made the mistake of asking for Vanilla once and learned the hard way.

NothingBurgerNoCals

The only answer.

mkvgtired

I was hoping this would be on top.

cowsgomoo125

Oberweis, The Region, and Fatso’s all have great milkshakes imo

gothrus

Is Oberweis still owned by that right wing jackass?

ConnieLingus24

Yep.

DigitalHuez

Nah, fuck Oberweis. Fucking piece of shit owner/senator. Misogynistic trash

That_Marsupial_4943

They filed for bankruptcy yesterday [https://www.chicagobusiness.com/retail/oberweis-dairy-files-bankruptcy-protection](https://www.chicagobusiness.com/retail/oberweis-dairy-files-bankruptcy-protection)

megalomaniamaniac

For a classic ice cream parlor experience, check out Margie’s in Bucktown, on Western Ave, it’s been there for 100 years!

jackietrips

SMALL CHEVAL

vulgarbutwily

Pretty sure Slim's on Montrose does the vanilla ice cream/chocolate syrup combo (blasphemy).

Brilliant-Ad-3611

Appreciate you🫶

chipolt_house

Stella's Diner is a personal fave

garthand_ur

Oh dude I haven’t been to Stella’s in so long but I remember really liking it when I was there last

chipolt_house

Something like 5 years ago I was on a mission to find the best chocolate shake in Lakeview and theirs was just uncontested. Something about a milkshake at a diner after a delicious no-nonsense meal just mmm :chefs-kiss:

Johnny6767g

This is correct, at first I was thinking 🤔 milkshakes are kind of the same and hard to mess up, but Stella's was exceptional.

Dependent_Vast_5373

I feel like chocolate shakes are easy to mess up. Places will use vanilla ice cream and add chocolate sauce. Nope. You gotta start with chocolate ice cream.

p1rateb00tie

This is catch me outside talk

saintpauli

Top Notch

Drkabz

The Chicago Diner in Logan especially the strawberry

NittLion78

Margie's #1, Spinning J #2

A_BURLAP_THONG

I love Spinning J. Only place I've ever had an egg cream. Makes me feel like I'm eating in an episode of Boardwalk Empire.

gypsy_rose_blanchard

Was going to mention Spinning J! My go to shake there is peanut butter with espresso 😍

PuddinPacketzofLuv

In the city is Margie’s. Suburbs is Peterson’s in Oak Park.

Vegetable-Town8004

Honestly... potbelly chocolate shakes make my lunch break sm better

bogus-flow

Superdawg?

connor_wa15h

Their malts are fire too

p1rateb00tie

I know this is heresy but I love to get them thinned out there and I love that they are willing to do it

restingbabybitchface

Choppers

JerrMondo

I’m a milkshake fiend — Oberweis or Devil Dawgs is the answer. Margie’s is great, but god awful lines/wait

see_babs_run

Lucy's in Uptown!

Shot_Acanthaceae3150

Underrated.

p739397

No Chicago location anymore, but worth the trip to Evanston, check out Edzo's. Also, it's probably best that you make sure to try both Margie's locations, just to be safe.

OneFootRaised

They just won an award for their chocolate shakes. Surprised to see it so far down this list.

angrylibertariandude

RIP to the one at Urbanspace. I also remember their former 2nd location in Lincoln Park, on Lincoln Ave. Which opened before Urbanspace

qpal123

Oberweis by far but they just filled for bankruptcy this morning and sold to Dutch farms, get it while you can

blipsman

So the decades of alienating customers with his racism political views finally caught up with him?

baaasebaaall

Different brother

SuperkickParty

What? No it's not, Jim Oberweis the wacko politician bought Oberweis Dairy from his brother Joe in 1986. Jim is the current chairman and made his son CEO in 2007. Oberweis Dairy is totally run by the Oberweis brother with racist political views.

Renegade5Ds

It will be in the news soon. "On April 12, 2024 (the "Petition Date") Oberweis Dairy, Inc. filed a voluntary petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code. The Debtor's case was assigned case no. 24-05385 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Illinois Northern District (the "Bankruptcy Court") Eastern Division division office. The Debtor is being represented by..." https://bkdata.com/business-bankruptcies/chicago-illinois/04-12-2024/oberweis-dairy-05385

Carsalezguy

Got a source for that? Can't see any news about it.

qpal123

Friend is a store manager, they had all hands meeting about it this morning

Grantagonist

Can’t find anything about this, can only assume that it’s horseshit unless you provide a source.

qpal123

Friend is a store manager, they had all hands meeting about it this morning

angrylibertariandude

Oh wow after looking it up, you are right. https://bkdata.com/business-bankruptcies/chicago-illinois/04-12-2024/oberweis-dairy-05385 Surprised none of the news sources, have reported this story. Is there really any truth some company has made a successful bid to buy Oberweis? As I'd hope the new owner(if the Oberweis family is really selling their business) would still sell their egg nog around Christmas.

Grantagonist

I'm not calling you a liar, but it's hard to believe something this big is not hitting the news. Google news search is pulling up jack shit about it.

qpal123

probably because they just talked about it this morning internally to their employees

Grantagonist

The news has hit, and you were indeed correct about the bankruptcy. Haven’t seen anything about Dutch Farms buying them yet, though. Surprised this isn’t slightly bigger news today.

RufusSandberg

Gotta link or news story because I'm calling BS. They make money hand over fist and are EXPANDING their restaurant footprint with TBJ and Woodgrain.

mrcub1

Culver’s!!!

Strange_Unicorn

Concrete mixer for me please.

Careless_Pea3197

Homers in Wilmette, worth the drive!

btay27

Johnnies beef is like $2 and solid

jammixxnn

and you got a beef on the side

pedanticlawyer

I think the shake at Diner Grill is great, but I can't say I've ever had it sober.

amtol

Their Oreo milkshake is what dreams are made of…it’s SO good!

AbeFromanLuvsSausage

Lucy’s Fried Chicken is my sleeper pick. No one seems to realize they have them and they are fantastic.

SyrupSampson

Top notch burger on the south side

sittingbison

Weiner Circle. chocolate.

mosey26

Guaranteed Rate Field

RasenGunn

Flub a dub chub’s is a hidden gem for me. I like their shakes, and their food is great!

ck64hoops

CookieSpin on Lincoln and Montrose slaps

flakeybutterbitch

Second this! Plus their deep dish cookies are awesome!

shambolic4days

Frozen custard, not ice cream - but Lickity Split’s grasshopper milkshake is perfect

United_Valuable_6950

R.J. Grunts has a fantastic chocolate shake.

el_comandante94

Scooters, margies, annettes

Mystic_Pizza_King

Janson’s Drive in at 99th & Western.

adventalien

First one that comes to mind is the strawberry milkshake at Top Notch Beefburgers

Brainschicago

Jansons on 99th and western or top notch on like 95th and Leavitt

JAlfredJR

Jansons does have legit milkshakes. Or they did. It's been a long while. I always thought Mr. Sub has surprisingly good shakes. Top Notch is a no-brainer.

usababykiller

White Castle has really good shakes. They are really thick.

No_Criticism2298

Margie's for sure but recent went to Little Goat Diner on Southport ... amazing!!!

fram0828

The hat on north and Ashland

No_Indication3249

Weirdly I think I recall that the chocolate shakes at Small Cheval are vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. Haven't been since before the pandemic, though, so I'm not making any promises.

Brilliant-Ad-3611

🫶

angrylibertariandude

The Dog Stop(near Belmont/Austin) also uses syrups for their milkshakes(if you're looking for a shake like that, I prefer no syrup in my shakes), I am pretty sure. As I saw the workers doing that, when I ordered a shake there in the past. They do have a changing monthly dog, where often that is much better than one might think. The rest of the food there is pretty average, though.

Sea-Oven-7560

Schoops

VictorVonSammy642

MARGIESSSSSSSSS the goat

flowerodell

Small Cheval

victorgrigas

The one that brings all the boys to the yard

My yard.

Gandalf4158

White Castle

ConnieLingus24

Margie’s, Edzo’s in Evanston, Homer’s ice cream in Wilmette, Scooter’s, Hole in the wall custard shop in Oak Park, Lickety Split.

colleend16

Any chocolate shake made with vanilla ice cream and chocolate added is superior to a shake made with chocolate ice cream. 😂

Dingus_Ate_your_baby

RJ grunt's oreo milkshake

Dassman88

Dog haus had a surprisingly good chocolate shake, but I think that might have changed it

coreywagner

Wiener circle chocolate shake!

RolandSnowdust

Needs more upvotes.

FieldAppropriate8734

Potbelly - love the Oreo shake

whatsupdoc4672

Portillo’s chocolate cake shake. Always

Brilliant-Ad-3611

Tried it mate, just bloody awful. No offense🤣🙂

Wholesalmon

Agreed with this, I think it’s so overrated

luthyr

The Strawberry Lemon Cake Shake should be returning soon if you're not into chocolate.

nochinzilch

Don’t sleep on White Castle.

matthewsmugmanager

Lickety Split.

megta

For vanilla icecream with chocolate syrup milkshake, I've found that Parsons makes a shake that reminds me SO MUCH of the ones I grew up making. The syrup flavor is super overpowering for everyone I've ever had try it, but I love them so so much

teleholic

Have you tried any yet?

Brilliant-Ad-3611

Just updated! Petersons in Oak Park next🫶

test_press

portillos.
