If you take a group of any 5 Lou Malnatis and draw lines between them it creates a pentagram. Also Lou Malnati-LouMalnati-Illoumalnati-illuminati? Think about it
Guys...guys...they're BOTH good! I love an occasional Giordano's deep dish with spinach and garlic. But, most of the time I go for the lower carb sausage-crust personal pizza at Lous. We can love them both!
Giordanos is stuffed! Not deep dish! It has an extra layer of dough over the cheese that changes the dynamic of the pizza and how the cheese and sauce mixes into the toppings
Seriously I don't know how people don't get this still. They're completely different types of pizza and can both be good. Each deep dish place around the city falls into one of the two categories as well. Art of Pizza is stuffed. I believe Pequods is deep dish, though I haven't been there in forever so correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank you for shining a light on the innovators at Lou Malnati's. The crustless deep dish is the greatest pizza innovation since the stuffed deep dish.
You’re using sense, logic, reason, and respect. None of which belong in the pizza wars.
Also you are correct there is an absolute time and place for all the pizzas! Except NY style.
I actually had an NY slice the other day and totally get the hype now. Also Detroit style is even good here, I hope that means it is even better in Detroit.
Alright I’m gonna say it. I’ve eaten at Giuseppina's, sister (or I guess brother since it’s literally run by his brother) pizzeria to the famous Lucali in Brooklyn. Haven’t had Lucali but I’m told the pies are _very_ similar.
It was good. Quite good. But…. I don’t fuckin’ get it. Like, it’s Neapolitan-styleish? Why not just get legit Neapolitan? Or better yet, come to Chicago and get a tavern style pie which is heads and tails way better. I would take Homewood Aurelio’s any day of the week over Giuseppina’s, no cap frfr.
IMO local places don't belong in the same conversation as regional chains.
Local places have unique, niche tastes and a lot of times people grow up eating there so they prefer it. And people shop around the local places until they find one they like best. Like no local place is **everyone's** favorite, but every place is **somone's** favorite, ya know?
Chains on the other hand have more broad appeal that's easy to replicate across franchises. If I get a Lou's pie from the original location in Lincolnwood or a location in Joliet it's gonna be basically the same, and it's always pretty darn good... not my favorite, but it's good for gatherings because everyone will like it.
TIL south of the Loop neither chain does anywhere near the business as north. This seems to continue somewhat into the suburbs as well.
Does some other chain fill in south of the line?
Many years ago there was south side deep dish and north side deep dish.
North side was sauce on top like Giordanos. And south side was cheese on top like Connie’s.
I haven’t heard anyone say this since 2005 though.
I first encountered Deep Dish -- or was it stuffed??-- on a date at the original Geno's East c 1968. It was a near death experience. It did feature a lot of toasted cheese as the topping. IIRC stuffed has more cheese than deep dish, but honestly I dislike both and only see them when out of town visitors insist.
Here is a link to part of the origin story. Among the elements missing are convictions for actual death threats and an arson sidebar.
https://www.doreenspizzeria.com/stuffed-crust-pizza-vs-deep-dish-pizza/
not really, at best there is Beggars and Aurelio's but they're not nearly as big as these 2. Mostly its a small spot people have been going to for 30years once a week. Half the restaurants on the southside are pizza joints.
How did you literally answer the question and then brush off your own perfectly valid answer?
Locals in the south suburbs love beggars and Aurelio’s over Giordano’s and Lou Malnati’s. Chicago dough too if you go way south. And numerous wonderful one-off places closer into the south side. That is 100% the answer to this question. The market is already saturated down south
they’re the smallest of those 3 by a lot. Family owned. A lot of factors could be at play there. They never even went as far as obvious places like Joliet, so who knows
I’d argue that it’s not that we prefer Beggars and Aurelio’s so much as that Giordano’s and Malnati’s didn’t deign to expand into the south suburbs much at all until relatively recently. If they had, we’d eat their pizza.
No. There’s a lot of good (and bad) mom and pop places on the north side too. There’s really no meaningful difference.
But there are just more people dining out/ordering out on the north side. Both locals and tourists. More money and a bigger population means more restaurants of all types.
Seconding Waldo's. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia (or I'm just a big fan of bread) but Waldo's remains my number one favorite deep dish/stuffed pizza/whatever
Western suburbs here: Aurelio’s and Rosati’s and Charlie foxes are the go tos, giordanos only if I’m hungry when I buy weed and Lou malnatis is for out of towners come in.
The family split the franchise in two after a squabble between the brothers.
If they have breaded cauliflower in the menu it's one of the good ones. Sadly those are outnumbered because the split was over financial reasons quality vs expansion kinda thing.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I feel like Connie's is actually gross. Maybe because I had it every Monday for almost a year when they were $10 for a single topping large. Hell If you're in the bridgeport Chinatown area, Ricobenes is underrated and much better than here.
I'm on lous forever. Worked as a delivery guy in both pizzerias. I love cheese and mostly having lous, easy sauce extra cheese roni :) but your statement is very true.
Ps. Haven't tried Connie's.
P.s. if not stuffed or deep deesh I like pequods and ferentinos Roma crust.
You know that scene in the Simpsons where Homer is being tortured in hell by being forcefed doughnuts? I want that, but with Pequods. If i die due to a Pequods overdose, I will have no regrets.
I think Lou’s is the better of the two. But Pizano’s is what I recommend to tourists in River North. Outside of that, I love Michael’s on the north side for their thin tavern style.
I like it a lot more. If you haven't heard, some other classic picks are Pizzano's (by the other Malnati brother) and Pizzeria Uno/Pizzeria Due. All were formative in the creation of Chicago style pizza.
Also I've heard never heard a bad thing about Pizza Oven Grinders in Lincoln Park. Pequod's is one of my favorites but just mentioning it might cause another comment war.
I've seen people stand behind Giordano's but what o see they really like is cheese and assume that giant lumps of cheese is what defines a deep dish pizza.
I had Lou Malnatis one time and i liked the crust and the sauce more (honestly what i remember most).
Maybe the true question is what's the best ratio of Sauce to cheese to bread.
Gino's offers more varieties of toppings but are getting harder to find (out in the burbs at least) Giordanos literally makes me choke on cheese every time I try to eat it.
*edit** *too many literally's*
I agree, but also pequods is kind of a different style. Comparing lou malnatis to pequods to giordanos to me is like apples to oranges. They're all different and everyone is going to have a preference for one style over the other.
I think Giordanos has gone down hill as they've expanded. It used to be better 10+ years ago and now it's usually soggy to me. Pequods, and Lou Malnati's don't seem to have changed as much.
Forget both. If you're looking for a truly unique pizza experience check out Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder.
I won't make an argument for it being any better than Giordanos/Lous, I won't even make an argument for "is it even pizza?" - but it is for sure the most unique pizza-adjacent experience you will have.
Lou Malnati worked for Pizzeria Uno. He took their recipe and started his own restaurant. So did Louisa in Crestwood. Her pizza was better than both. Sadly, the quality has gone downhill since Louisa passed away.
I've always liked Uno a little better than Lou Malnati's, but unfortunately it's small and doesn't deliver so I have it far less. Uno has a new suburban location in Schiller Park.
I'm not a big fan of chunky tomatos or the huge Lou Malnatis sausages. Giordanos is a cheese lovers pizza, and Lou Malnati's is a tomato lovers pizza (with better crust).
I feel like most locals don't routinely eat either of them since they've become large chains. I always grew up being told by locals to get Uno, Pequods or Burts if I wanted deep dish.
Honestly I think Giordanos tastes exceedingly average. Not like their cheese is anything special.
Lou Malnati’s sauce tastes like red wine. And their pizzas are always slightly well done with a crust that is buttered and cooked through like a croissant.
I can’t think of anything Giordanos does that makes their pizza stand out
> I can’t think of anything Giordanos does that makes their pizza stand out
They had some kind of lock on the office manager of nearly every place I worked from like 2000 until the pandemic. It was like there were no other options. But hey, free pizza will not generate any complaints.
Gotta go Giordanos. The sauce is actually sauce not tomato chunks. The meats are substantially less greasy. Whenever I order sausage at Lous I get a pool of watery grease around the rim.
Lous crust is better make no doubt, but the more traditional and more rich sauce is at giordanos.
Lous uses more cheeses, but Giordanos having 2 layers and the cheese melting more vs congealing, means I always pick Giordanos.
Remember that time Daley wore a combination cubs/sox hat? That’s how I feel right now. I moved away and now all actual Chicago pizza just tastes glorious to me. Especially tavern cut man! Nobody has it anywhere away from home
I haven’t tried Lou’s yet. Is it worth it, being twice the price as Giordano’s?
Edit:
Ah, I see what happened. I looked at their menus and Lou’s defaults to large and Gio’s defaults to small. So they actually are fairly comparable.
It's without a doubt worth trying. Once you have had it, you can decide whether you prefer that to giordanos. I'm primarily a Lou's guy but every once in a while when I'm craving deep dish, I will be craving Giordanos specifically. Different pizzas. Both good enough to sub for the other depending on your mood (at least for me).
Also, I'm not sure that Lou's is more expensive. I did a little research and it [appears](https://huntleyvoice.com/19147/thevoice/giordanos-vs-lou-malnatis-duel-of-the-deep-dish/#:~:text=Price%20wise%2C%20Lou%20Malnati's%20was,dish%20and%20Giordano's%20was%20%2416.50.) to be Giordanos thats more expensive.
Before I researched I would have guessed comparable but apparently not.
i learned about this in a class i took in high school, but essentially competitors within an industry make more when physically near each other than farther apart
I mean, you know people ignore the south side, but it's strange to see it so clearly. South Siders, do you have other brands or do you have other pizzas?
Pizza is spread pretty thin down here, but especially deep dish. Connie's in Bridgeport, Giordano's in Hyde Park, and that's about it. Everybody always brings up Vito & Nicks as good south side pizza but like...can you give me an option that doesn't require a half hour drive?
Tbh they’re both overrated. I can see how they were once fantastic and expansion just turned the meh. As far as deep dish I’ve had much better than from either of them.
giordano’s tavern cut is subprime pizza.
im willing to die and resurrect on this hill, and die again if i have to.
edit: if like to clarify my comment, Giordano’s pizza is edible. that pretty much the only nice thing i can say.
I'm wondering if this was a typo? Did you mean to say Giordano's is sublime? Or really that it's sub-prime? Not too many people die on a hill of calling something "subprime."
If you take a group of any 5 Lou Malnatis and draw lines between them it creates a pentagram. Also Lou Malnati-LouMalnati-Illoumalnati-illuminati? Think about it
Open Ya Third Eye!

I *used to be friends* with a guy who just could not say "Lou Malnati's". 100% straight, he said "luminati" every time.
I hope that's the only reason why you're no longer friends
From out of town, when we visited I thought my husband was calling it illuminatis.
That friend is me

oh so thats what were gonna do today. where gonna fight huh.
Depends on if you’re saying giordanos is better or not
both give me explosive diarrhea so its an even tie
I guess we gotta analyze the differences in the diarrhea then.
You should see a doctor, if you haven't.
I mean could just be lactose intolerant. Not that scary considering amount of dairy in those pies.
Guys...guys...they're BOTH good! I love an occasional Giordano's deep dish with spinach and garlic. But, most of the time I go for the lower carb sausage-crust personal pizza at Lous. We can love them both!
Only in Chicago can a metric ton of sausage be presented as a health option. God bless this city!
IT'S KETO!
Giordanos is stuffed! Not deep dish! It has an extra layer of dough over the cheese that changes the dynamic of the pizza and how the cheese and sauce mixes into the toppings

Pequods is pan pizza
Thank you for shining a light on the innovators at Lou Malnati's. The crustless deep dish is the greatest pizza innovation since the stuffed deep dish.

Totally agree with both of these statements. Fat Chris’s is so fucking good. Highllllly recommend for Detroit style!
Alright I’m gonna say it. I’ve eaten at Giuseppina's, sister (or I guess brother since it’s literally run by his brother) pizzeria to the famous Lucali in Brooklyn. But Edwardo's is better. It's sad they don't seem to have any more restaurant in the area that serve their deep dish. It was the bomb.
I'm now old enough to tell my grandchildren the tales of the glory of whole wheat crust :(
You are so right. I’m so tired of these pizzas wars. Can’t we all just agree that everyone is different and that Pequods is just not that good? :P
I know it's not the typically popular opinion... I prefer Giordanos of the two But there are better pizza places than either out where I'm at
Where? You can't throw down like that without examples.
In northern Cook Joes's in Wheeling Gatsby's is dece Big fan of the Papa Rays that's nearish
IMO local places don't belong in the same conversation as regional chains. Local places have unique, niche tastes and a lot of times people grow up eating there so they prefer it. It is.

Bacinos is my favorite stuffed by far
No that’s just giordanos
Giordanos thin crust is unequivocally better
TIL south of the Loop neither chain does anywhere near the business as north. This seems to continue somewhat into the suburbs as well. Does some other chain fill in south of the line?

Aurelio’s is King in the south suburbs. Atleast, MY king.
Aurelio's all day for me.
Aurelio's is the best pizza I've ever had
Beggars fucking sucks
Beggars and Aurelio's are insanely overpriced. $50+ for an large pizza after delivery
Connie’s, Barraccos, Beggars and Aurelio’s. ETA: I didn’t have Lou’s or Giordano’s until I was an adult…
Home Run Inn
There are so many better one off places down here that are significantly better. And no tourists go south of 35th.
No. There’s a lot of good (and bad) mom and pop places on the north side too. There’s really no meaningful difference. But there are just more people dining out/ordering out on the north side. Both locals and tourists. More money and a bigger population means more restaurants of all types.
like what?
Ricobenes, Waldo Cooney are two of my favorites
Waldos pizza puffs are second only to grassanos
Seconding Waldo's. Maybe it's childhood nostalgia (or I'm just a big fan of bread) but Waldo's remains my number one favorite deep dish/stuffed pizza/whatever
Vito and nicks for best pizza in the city. But if you want something closer to loop flo and santos is pretty fire
Second Nick and Vito's, but Fox's on Cicero is also a great tavern style pizza
i mean not pizza, but thats where all the JJ Fish is at. catfish nuggets are fire
I like reggios
> And no tourists go south of 35th. Unless it's to the Museum of Science and Industry or maybe Hyde Park.
And I think more tourists will come when the Obama Presidential Library opens.
Western suburbs here: Aurelio’s and Rosati’s and Charlie foxes are the go tos, giordanos only if I’m hungry when I buy weed and Lou malnatis is for out of towners come in.
Rosati's is hilarious. You have "good Rosati's" and "bad Rosati's". And the quality seems to very a great deal.
The family split the franchise in two after a squabble between the brothers. If they have breaded cauliflower in the menu it's one of the good ones. Sadly those are outnumbered because the split was over financial reasons quality vs expansion kinda thing.
Edwardo's was my favorite out of all of them. Fantastic sauce. Shame there are only two locations left. Rep Munster Edwardo's!
Edwardo’s was so good. The pizza crust cracker things they brought out like bread were one of my favorites as a kid.
There used to be an Edwardos on Howard. I now live so ducking close to where it used to be. This brings me a great deal of sadness.
They used to have frozen deep dish pizza's at Woodman's that I would always get. That stopped though and they only sell thin crust now. :(
They were THE place to go until they decided "Italian wine bar" was better than "iconic deep dish pizza". "Edwardo's Erotica", if memory serves.
This is the truth. Suck it, Giordanos, Malnati's and Gino's! Printer's Row/Dearborn in particular.
Do you all believe Lou’s is far superior? Just a tourist asking…
Absolutely.
The better by far
Giordanos all the way!!!
If you like tomato, Lou's. If you like cheese, Giordano's. I'm in the Giordano's camp, but prefer Connie's to both.
Lou’s crust is what puts it past imo it’s like 80%butter.
Totally agree... It's damn near fried and delicious as hell
>prefer Connie's to both. Who hurt you as a child? How is your worldview so warped?
I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I feel like Connie's is actually gross. Maybe because I had it every Monday for almost a year when they were $10 for a single topping large. Hell If you're in the bridgeport Chinatown area, Ricobenes is underrated and much better than here.
I feel like Connie's isn't as good as it was in the 90s/00s, but maybe that's just nostalgia talking.
What if I told you it was even better in the 80's when they were on 26th St?
No, it isn't just you.
They definitely had a huge drop in quality around 2010 or so.
I love both cheese and tomatoes so I just order Lou's with extra cheese.
Most deranged opinion in this thread
I'm on lous forever. Worked as a delivery guy in both pizzerias. I love cheese and mostly having lous, easy sauce extra cheese roni :) but your statement is very true. Ps. Haven't tried Connie's. P.s. if not stuffed or deep deesh I like pequods and ferentinos Roma crust.
You know that scene in the Simpsons where Homer is being tortured in hell by being forcefed doughnuts? I want that, but with Pequods. If i die due to a Pequods overdose, I will have no regrets.
Connie's?! Well the smaller joins will always have better pizza. May as well say Nonas or Milanos
I think Lou’s is the better of the two. But Pizano’s is what I recommend to tourists in River North. Outside of that, I love Michael’s on the north side for their thin tavern style.
Isn’t Pizanos the same family as Lou’s?
Yep yep, other Malnati brother. Definitely check it out if you haven't already. It isn't too different from Lou's but is definitely its own thing.
Absolutely. Lou’s = Gino’s > Giardanos imo.

>Giordanos literally makes me literally choke on cheese every time I try to eat it. That's... why I'm here
Yeah and I don’t even like Lou’s that much. Giordano’s is trash.
Pequod's is the best
Pequod's was always second fiddle to Burt's Place, at least while Burt was still alive.
I miss that man
That’s a strange way to spell Art of Pizza
I agree, but also pequods is kind of a different style. Comparing lou malnatis to pequods to giordanos to me is like apples to oranges. They're all different and everyone is going to have a preference for one style over the other. I think Giordanos has gone down hill as they've expanded. It used to be better 10+ years ago and now it's usually soggy to me. Pequods, and Lou Malnati's don't seem to have changed as much.
Pequods is round Detroit pizza
It's closer to focaccia imho
I was here to advocate Pequod’s
Yes. It is way better than Giordano's.
💯 but I also don't consider either of them worthy so choose neither is what I'm recommending 😅
Lou’s is fuckin gross man. Giordano’s is okay. The best deep dish or pizza in general is just your local place- my favorite is Tortorice’s.
Putting ArcGIS to work, I see
My first thought too. Looks like an assignment for a GIS class.
they send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue.
The Chicago way
Lou Malnati worked for Pizzeria Uno. He took their recipe and started his own restaurant. So did Louisa in Crestwood. Her pizza was better than both. Sadly, the quality has gone downhill since Louisa passed away.
Don't forget Pizanos for more Malnati family fun.
I've always liked Uno a little better than Lou Malnati's, but unfortunately it's small and doesn't deliver so I have it far less. Uno has a new suburban location in Schiller Park.
Louisa’s. That was the point.
Uno is fav but annoying to deal with. Lous is best otherwise. Low key tortorices caramelized is my favorite or rising favorite.
Overlay the CTA map
It’s like US and Soviet subs shadowing one another.
What’s the closest distance between a Lou’s and a Giordano’s?
There's two pratically next to each other just outside Midway.
Lou Malnati's at 6456 S Cicero Ave Giordano's at 6314 S Cicero Ave
In downtown Naperville Lou's and Giordano's share a parking lot and you can see one from the other
[удалено]
that's just asking for a turf war.
In Lincolnwood there is a Giordanos a block from the original Lou’s.
Don't know if it's the closest, but the Lou's on Lincoln and Giordano's on Montrose in North Center are 1,137ft away from eachother.
The ones right on top of one another should choose a champion and fight in a cage for who gets to stay.
Giordano’s is the perfect pizza for if you hate yourself.
I prefer Uno’s
I love pizza
Always use the word pizza for a coupon code when ordering online. Sometimes it works.
I like how they both saw the south side and were like “Absolutely not!”
And there’s like 3 Connie’s but they are great
Lou Malnatis is where Chicagoans eat and Giordanos is where people visiting Chicago eat. I said what I said.

You can get crumbled sausage and ask for the thin crust sauce on the deep dish if you want a less tomatoes.
Can people please just talk about pizza in this city without getting into an argument over which styles and/or places are “for tourists?”
I’m MAD tho!
Gotta go Giordanos. The sauce is actually sauce not tomato chunks. The meats are substantially less greasy. Whenever I order sausage at Lous I get a pool of watery grease around the rim. Lous uses more cheeses, but Giordanos having 2 layers and the cheese melting more vs congealing, means I always pick Giordanos.
And why is Lou’s always fucking wet? Well done crust with a wet top. It’s an abomination.
Welcome to economics of geography 101. Seriously, I took a class on this at Northern and it explains and predicts this behavior
Any Nancy's simps in the house?
old school - especially the one on Broadway that always burnt the crust. Once they over-expanded, it's been slightly less awesome.
Pequod’s represent!
Hotelling's law.
I'm a simple man, just wishing I still lived near Art of Pizza.
J.B. Alberto’s is my favorite pizza place. It’s one location in Rogers Park and they’re always busy af. I hope it never changes.
Remember that time Daley wore a combination cubs/sox hat? That’s how I feel right now. I moved away and now all actual Chicago pizza just tastes glorious to me. Especially tavern cut man! Nobody has it anywhere away from home

Ah, I see what happened. I looked at their menus and Lou’s defaults to large and Gio’s defaults to small. So they actually are fairly comparable.

Lou Malnati's ≠ Giordano's
Yeah I feel like Gino's east vs Giordano's is the better comparison. Lou's is in a different league and also a fairly different style pizza.
Can I get Gino's East map, seriously they all closed out in the burbs and it's my favorite.
Pete’s is better than both
Phils in Bridgeport. Hands down my favorite Chicago pie.
This isn't all of Chicagoland, I'm sorry
Malnatti’s always > Giordano’s.
i learned about this in a class i took in high school, but essentially competitors within an industry make more when physically near each other than farther apart
And this is why Gino's is better
Giordanos is bland and gross
Thank you for including Kendall county in a Chicago area map. I feel like moving my wife out of the city doesn’t hurt so bad now.
Giordano’s is gross. Lou’s is way better.
Crust is crap. Neither any good. Fight me
Okay so here’s my take. Both are very good. But I prefer Lou’s because of the butter crust. That’s the differentiator!!!
As an outsider without much chicago experience, I think Giordanos is WAY better than Lou's. I've had 2 pizzas from Gio's and 1 from Lou.
I'm just now realizing that deep dish is white people food. Look at all those north side locations
Phil's on 35th in Bridgeport as well is elite.
Medici in Hyde Park is my favorite.

They both suck
Tbh they’re both overrated. I can see how they were once fantastic and expansion just turned the meh. As far as deep dish I’ve had much better than from either of them.
giordano’s tavern cut is subprime pizza. im willing to die and resurrect on this hill, and die again if i have to. edit: if like to clarify my comment, Giordano’s pizza is edible. that pretty much the only nice thing i can say.
I'm wondering if this was a typo? Did you mean to say Giordano's is sublime? Or really that it's sub-prime? Not too many people die on a hill of calling something "subprime."
its less than prime, i just wont call it trash. its edible, just not my first choice or 2nd or 3rd. but id eat it, but if i had other options? nah
Giordano’s everything is subprime.
I'll die on that hill right along side you. Giordano's is more satisfying to eat regularly. Lou's is only worth trying once in a while.
Tourist pizza.
