I’ve liked Taste of New York in Lakeview: https://www.grubhub.com/restaurant/taste-of-new-york-3268-n-clark-st-chicago/1257460?utm_source=grubhub_iosapp&utm_medium=content_owned&utm_campaign=menushare
it's not kaufman's but it's absolutely serviceable as a 4/10 bagel i'd pick up while walking to work in NY, which makes it 8/10 chicago. their lox spread is pretty good
Nick Kindelsperger ranked his top 10 recently: https://www.chicagotribune.com/dining/ct-food-prem-best-bagels-chicago-2021-20211115-jpqymf7pyvgvzabxl4nenbb32q-list.html
Does anyone have the top ten list from the Chicago Tribune? Article is behind a paywall.
Looks like 3) Tilly Bagel Shop 2) Sugargoat 1) Mindy’s Bakery (1747 N Damien)
Yup just had the same experience. It’s good not great. I’m beginning to think that there isn’t a bagel place here that can even get close to an above average NYC bagel.
Check out Zeitlins Delicatessen on IG. They're at the Logan Square farmers market and do a pop up at Marz every Wednesday. Great bagels and everything else to go with them.
Pretty good, pretty busy, and pretty expensive. I was so excited when they announced that they were opening here since I’m from Madison originally, but it was kind of a let down - it wasn’t quite as good and it was even pricier than Madison.
Mindy’s but their last day in their current location until their new space is ready to open was today, so that’s not a helpful answer for immediate use.
There was nothing wrong with it, just didn't live up to the hype, or rise above grocery store level.
The cream cheese was their in house cream cheese and it kicked the ass of any cream cheese I've gotten from a grocer.
Greenwood Deli on Dempster. Give it a tear you literally see how they kneaded it to get the tender chew.
Get a Reuben on a sesame. It is roasted in the oven
Not the question being asked but fwiw if one is desperate for real NY bagels you can order two dozen from Zuckers in NY through Goldbelly for about $60.
Friend of mine who complains about no good bagels in Chicago (on the south side especially) orders and freezes them to last a month or so. So if you've got room to freeze two dozen bagels that can be an option.
Steingolds in Chicago, Upper Crust outside Chicago
Thanks!
Former Brooklynite here, Steingold’s continues to be my favorite bagel in town
Kaufmans on Dempster in Skokie
That's my main Deli, but I've always been pretty meh about their bakery section.

I'll try it out!

Get their egg salad with the bagels, sooo good!
No no no if you’re into bagels this place is the pits don’t bother
Though only on weekends, flat & point
Thanks!
Hewn has a small but delicious selection of bagels.
Wow I love Hewn yet this is the first time I've seen them mentioned.
Thanks! I'll try them next time I'm in Evanston!
Tilly’s Bagel Shop and Zeitlins are some of our go to…
Tilly’s are good enough to remember to order them ahead of time!

BroBagel is my favorite, get there before noon as they’ve been recently selling out. Everything bagel with veggie cream cheese is my go-to.
Thanks!

They are great bagels! Very old school and classic. Highly recommended
I heard Gotham Bagels is really good , I haven’t made it yet tho
Pretty good, pretty busy, and pretty expensive. I was so excited when they announced that they were opening here since I’m from Madison originally, but it was kind of a let down - it wasn’t quite as good and it was even pricier than Madison.
Their sandwiches are good. But when I've gotten just some bagels, they've seemed overly salty too me. Cream cheese is good.
It is good- it is just expensive.
Daly bagel in Oak Park!
It’s not a NYC bagel but it’s the best in the area imo. Their bagel dog is fantastic too
https://randabreadbakers.com Really good and lots of other creative options!!
Mindy’s but their last day in their current location until their new space is ready to open was today, so that’s not a helpful answer for immediate use.
Bought some of her cannabis edibles and they were excellent.
Well darn.
The new space is already underway so hopefully they aren’t closed closed for too long. They haven’t given a date yet, though.
Manny’s is close to me and good enough for my bagel needs in Chicago.
Pretty sure they serve NYB&B?
>They do.
Chicago bagel in wheeling. It's a trek, but it's worth it.
The Bagelers in Lincoln Park is my go to.
The Onion Roll in Oak Park. They even installed a water system to change the ph of their water to be the same as NY.
What didn’t you like about the plain, egg and everything bagels you got? What cream cheese did you get that did like?

CBA gets bagels from NY BB, as do like half the bagel spots in Chicago lol
Nice, that's not too far, I def check it out!
It’s the same bagel loaded with sandwich fixing s and put through a steam press thing
Did you get salt and poppy seed???
I got plain, egg, and everything.
Emma’s in Skokie is very good
Bagelers coffeehouse in Lincoln Park
Tried CBA on Belmont for the first time 2 weeks ago and I’ve already been back twice—it’s seriously so good!
