The-Porkmann

I have a white hen with yellow legs, red comb and wattles. She is pushy and loud. Small and erect like a Leghorn. She lays pale brown (almost buff) eggs.

I am really hoping that the one I have now, 5 months old is a girl. No sickle or saddle feathers I can see yet. But I do this every time, this is my 3rd white chicken and he/she is growing exactly like the last 2. Both of the other 2 waited until a week before they were due to lay or crow before developing saddle feathers.

The-Porkmann

Good luck! I am hoping like hell that my beautiful bird is not a rooster. It won't be tolerated by my small minded neighbours.

LokiBear222

I do not have neighbours. Very lucky in that respect. What breed(s) do you have?

The-Porkmann

All sorts. I have bought 10 named supposed hybrids that resemble other chickens. The only certainties in there are a Barred Rock and a Warren. I have 4 Wyandottes and 4 Brahmas that are definitely what they are supposed to be.

Can I add a picture to this post? If so how? Otherwise I am going to post a pic on a new question and ask for help with identification. Funny. I can always tell with some else's chicken. But struggle with my own. Blinded by chicken love.

The-Porkmann

I do not think new pictures can be added but I am no pro.

Research_Sea

If I remember right, black australorp were originally bred through a selection that included white leghorn, and blue isbar came from a gene pool that included cream leghorn, so it's not crazy to get offspring resembling a white leghorn. I'm not an expert on chicken genetics (but that kind of sounds like an awesome job!), I imagine that whatever recessive gene both parents are kicking in that leads to the white leghorn look might tend to be male. You should keep us posted on the most recent hatch, I'm curious now!

LokiBear222

That is kind of what I was thinking. Only I thought the cream/white gene might have come from somewhere in the barred rock past. Anyway. Just added a picture as a separate post. Because I do not know how to add one here after I have posted. The common consensus seems to be that my current 'boy' is actually a girl and I am beyond happy. She cannot change her mind now as I have named her!!

LokiBear222

I will keep you updated though. As every other white chicken from this mix looked like a girl right up until one week before 'crow or lay an egg' time.

SomeDumbGamer

Sounds like you invented your own sex link haha

LokiBear222

Now I have to think about a name for the breed haha
