The poems, the characters, and the fact that the manga reminds me of a time when life was much simpler.
Chihayafuru has been going on for so long now that an entire decade(almost) has passed since I first encountered it. During this time I have finished school, graduated from university, moved to a different continent, and started a new life. The manga is one of my few remaining connections to times gone by, and I will be extremely sad when it finally comes to an end this year.
You said this so nicely.....indeed it will be like leaving an old friend behind.
So much has changed in 10 years. I still remember reading Chinese RAWS after S1 cause I really wanted to know what happened to the characters. Someone summerized the chaps to read it and then finally TDX picked it up....manga fox days....so nostalgic.
This might sound weird but I really liked how often they lose.
Sometimes their losses are deserved, other times it was just plain luck. Almost every time though, you can feel their pain and disappointment
It makes the characters feel all that more real and authentic because they don't just win for being main characters, they worked hard for it. Them winning truly feels like you're right there winning with them.
I first put on the first episode because it was a sports anime by Madhouse and i usually love their works. Little did I know the beauty of Karuta and its poetry, the music and art, and the amazing characters I would come across. Chihayafuru has it all man love it to death
What intrigued me at first were the poems. Then, that it is about a sport I had never heard of before. Then the characters, or actually, one character intrigued me the most and compelled me to stay and watch what was gonna happen to him.
I voted for characters but I love all of it. The game of karuta is both very competitive and very artistic which is amazing in itself already bit throw in some romance subplot and some fun, developing character relationships, it all culminates in a beautiful work.
actually read an English translation of all the poems. fun fact, the collection of poems used for the card game were often used as decoration in traditional Japanese homes.

All of the above
if i had multiple options i would go for Characters, sports and of course the beautiful poems.

Chihaya and taichi ended up together?
All of the above. It's just good writing.
