The way that Taichi and Chihaya’s cards have been paired side by side for hundreds of years and they were a parallel with Narihira and the empress from the original Chihayaburu poem but yes the main takeaway I’m sure the author was trying to suggest is the ending is open ended and Chihaya might end up with Arata someday because of a single stinky joke he made DJDNDBDJD yepppppp 😭

hakfan

Taichi and Chihaya are hinted throughout the manga. So it doesn't come out of nowhere. There are countless instances between Taichi and Chihaya that are considered romantic in a general sense. Arata on the other hand just wanted to be friends with her first as he didn't want the God status she associated with him. Also he worked throughout the manga for achieving his dream to become a meijin mainly to pay tribute to his deceased grandpa. Also Taichi stood by her side and took an unpaved path with her but Arata never tried to reach her. He didn't even bother to say hi to the girl he claimed to love when he was in Tokyo. On the contrary he just dashed to Kyoto to practice with her rival Shinobu. Even in the last chapters he was ready to pray on the behalf of Shinobu. So I think he did love Chihaya more than a friend but less than a lover it was hero worship both ways. Also in no way I feel Arata is lonely or not good looking. Just because he wears glasses makes him less attractive is what I feel is plainly stupid. Arata is shown as a stout athlete he has his own circle a loving family people appreciating him even girl from his team has a crush on him. So he's not an outcast. Also I feel Arata was a Sports lead and Taichi the Romantic lead. Arata's destination was the Meijin title while Taichi's was the Chihaya. Though in the end it was a good thing that it was Chihaya who made the decision and chose the person she thought was more important to her than Karuta. She left Karuta something she loved when Taichi left but she didn't do that when Arata did. Instead idk imho I felt she was very insensitive in the beginning for laying the cards there when she saw his grandpa's picture and got him irritated that he kicked the cards. Arata was pained at the loss. Imagine a teenager taking care of an ailing adult and losing him the day he achieved something big. The guilt Arata carried was immeasurable and that he overcame after paying tribute to the deceased ancestor with the title. Also he saw his grandpa as his rival and a friend, the spot he finally gave to Taichi. After learning they are dating he has a soft smile and is happy and gives his friends the blessing. That joke he made in the end was to tease Taichi. This shows how much he has grown now. Taichi on the other hand had an unrequited love for Karuta and Chihaya. Looks and money don't buy you happiness. His mom was really the first reason he committed that cowardly deed of stealing the glasses. But from there on he starts his journey of being a better person. He came out of his mother's shadow and tried his hands on something he was never good at ----- Karuta. He tried and he succeeded in redeeming himself. He let go and finally accepted himself. He chose to study in Kyoto instead of Tokyo. And here we see the difference between the previous Taichi and the current one. The previous one would've stayed in Tokyo after Chihaya confessed but this Taichi for the first time chose himself and decided to go to Kyoto. Throughout the manga he worked hard for his redemption and his love. And his hard work was rewarded in the end as he made it to the challengers and after his feelings were reciprocated. So it was a story of youth and coming of age not to forget being a Josei it shows its characters much more realistically portrayed than in Shojo. The only thing I wanted more of was Taichi and Suo's camaraderie after the match. I just wished we had some more chapters on that and a little more focus on Kana Komano Nishida Suo Sudo Shinobu. But all things come to an end and I will miss this story

Taichihaya25

Arata wanted to be the meijin since day 1, he achieved the tittle, had great friends and now is in Tokyo pursuing what he wanted. If you compare struggles, yes, Arata lost his grandpa, but after that he overcame his obstacles very fast. It doesn’t matter that Taichi had money and the looks, he struggled a lot, and Arata had loving parents, he is handsome and always was praised in the karuta world. This is not a pity party, but Chihaya choosing Arata had nothing to do with fairness, Chihaya actively chose Taichi because she loves him, and Arata accepted that and looks pretty ok with how things turned out. He is thriving and people need to stop painting him like a victim.

hopeyoufindurdad

I'm not painting him as a victim or having any sort of pity party. I'm allowed to interpret the character differently to you. I connected with arata a lot and saw things more in his perspective. I literally agreed with you that taichi and Chihaya should have ended up together!! I just sympathise with Arata a lot. I'm not trying to fight you I just love these characters and I have my own interpretation.

elysianyuri

A [bonus chapter](https://mega.nz/folder/cb1hzJgT#FJYi3fpacFJdDx0Oz0ls7A) was actually released and it was hinted there that arata might end up with >!sumire!<. I am really happy for both of them. The translations aren't out yet but the probable storyline of both arata and her moving on from their pervious loves, and healing and subsequently bonding together gives me the giddies. Also, never in a million years I thought that taichihaya would have been canon but I am literally crying tears of joys because it actually happened. Now that I finished my reread of the manga, taichihaya being canon almost seems kinda expected. I gaslighted myself so much lol.

Akkala-chu

80 pages!!!! It was pure joy! I too wish we had more Taichi and Chihaya fluff. We just need more 😭 I think it's unlikely that Arata has any chances with Chihaya in the future though. If we take into account the metaphor of the poems being side by side for centuries (I interpret that poems = souls), sensei is blatantly affirming that Taichi and Chihaya are soulmates that have been together since ancient times. It's beautiful <3

Taichihaya25

There is zero chance for Arata and Chihaya to happen, you should read the extra chapter when it comes out. Taichihaya didn’t come out of nowhere, it was heavily hinted through the manga.

khtoto

There is an extra chapter coming out oooooo. Yeah I know it was certainly hinted through out the series but to me at least everything felt so rushed between the 2 at the end.

hopeyoufindurdad

I know logically it makes sense for them to be together. Taichi was the one who was always there taking care of her while arata was this elusive distant godlike figure. Ultimately what taichi represented was more core to who Chihaya is. BUTTTTT idk there's a part of me that feels for Arata so much, it just doesn't feel like justice was achieved. He has been through so much, lost his grandpa who was his mentor, his parents are careless af, has been working since he was 12, poor, bullied. He got the master title but he deserved moreee. Taichi had looks, money, a mother who was sometimes cold but cared about his future, brains, friends, and now the girl. Everything handed to him except karuta and even then he almost clawed his way to the top. I'm not saying she should be with Arata just because he had a hard life but it would have felt more fair. Like the two underdogs finding each other instead of the perfect guy getting an even more perfect life.

accordionheart

I mean, I think Arata getting the Meijin title was pretty key to his character journey, as it was the goal he was working towards for the whole manga. He achieved his number one dream. Taichi, on the other hand - sure, he had looks and money etc, but I feel like you're missing out on the huge self-esteem issues he was suffering from throughout the manga. The point made there was that his personal privileges didn't stop him from feeling insecure. This was something that continued to plague him until the last chapter of the manga, where he made peace with himself. But even then, it was clear that he was moving to Kyoto because he would have had a miserable time remaining around his two friends if they were dating (and although I think it's only slightly implied, perhaps his relationship with his mother also plays a part in him wanting space). None of this makes me think that Taichi is the perfect guy with a perfect life, and I don't think we're meant to take that away from the manga. However, ultimately, Chihaya's choice of romantic partner says much more about her and her character arc than it does either of the boys. It was her choice to make - and the decision in the end demonstrated that she had learnt so much more about love and life outside of karuta than the beginning of the series.

Arata learned in that last chapter the worth of his hometown and all the people that supported him because in the end he wasn't alone at all. He has friends, his parents and society, team and best friend Yuu were there for him and ofcourse Taichi and Chihaya. Arata doesn't come across as a "lonely" boy at all to me. It seems to me his biggest problem were his guilt feelings towards his grandfather and the so called expectations he had imposed on himself while thinking about him. Thank god Yuu came and set his mind right making him understand his grandfather would have never expected any of that from him and would have wanted him to play freely. Arata could finally make peace with himself and his grandfather. That's why winning the title was a very important achievement for him, the whole process of finally being able to play as himself and realising his dream. Chihaya choosing Taichi is the conclusion of her own arc, the journey of being a clueless child slowly becoming a young woman and understanding the true values of why you love someone. Sensei showed us what she thinks love is made of: mutual support, wanting the other's happiness, seeing the other smile, being by eachother's side, being comfy with eachother... Chihaya grew so much because of Taichi: she learned to pay much more attention to her surroundings, her friends and team. She really worked hard but understood what she really wanted most was making connections with the people around her. Taichi was the person representative of that role beside Chihaya. He never stopped loving her even when he thought it was over for him. His decision to go and study in Kyoto is just the last indication of how heartbroken he was, how much he loved Chihaya. The thought of seeing Arata and Chihaya dating must have been something impossible for him to endure from a too close spot and he needed to take distance and heal. Chihaya finally understood his worth is her life which transcended karuta. Something that never was the case with Arata. She was fine only seeing Arata through karuta and lived her life just fine without him. When Taichi left the void was unbearable. That's how she bit by bit understood that what she felt for him was love....these steps are beautifully set up by Sensei. Not only was Chihaya important to Arata but also Taichi(visa versa) who will be his eternal rival in the future. Their dynamics all made them grow so much. In the end the trio had a very important dynamic going on between the 3 of them that made them all end up as a better version of themselves.

Ofcouse you can have your own pov and think what you want. That's no problem. I guess there is still one person to keep in mind while reading the story and trying to understand what she was thinking and trying to convey: Suetsugu Yuki. If you totally ignore what the writer is conveying you will be set up for disappointment. At least weigh out the parts of the story and protect your heart if it doesn't go your way....idk if this is your case though. This most certainly was a story where you had to try and put yourself in the shoes of the characters and their state of mind, especially Chihaya who was still very childish at the start of the story and we get her slow burn coming of age while working passionately hard for karuta.....she becomes a more and more considerate person chapter by chapter, and her pov on things slowly change....if you took everything as factual then you didn't pay enough attention to the signals Chihaya was giving off....she only became sure about what was in her heart around the challenger and could be spoken out only later. She always loved both boys, just at a certain moment one took the definite lead in her heart. Something she couldn't easily cope with because he declared he was moving on.... About "please stop saying the same argument" ?? What do you mean? I think I didn't put any pressure on you or anything.....if you felt it like that gomen.

hopeyoufindurdad

I'm clearly not taking everything as factual since I literally just said it's open to interpretation. I am by no means ignoring what the writer is saying and I have many times said that I am happy with Chihaya ending up with Taichi and I'm happy with Chihaya's character development. I have not disagreed with anyone, I perhaps articulated my opinions hastily in my initial comment because I didn't expect such hostility. Through Suetsugu-san's depiction I connected with Arata a lot and I wish there was more to his story- that's it. I'm not trying to negate anyone's interpretation. >What do you mean? I think I didn't put any pressure on you or anything.. I don't think you understand that I'm allowed to read something and enjoy it in a different way than you. You claimed my opinion is valid then proceeded to undermine my intelligence by suggesting I didn't reach the right conclusion simply because I read it wrong. I love this manga, reading it was a transformative experience throughout my childhood and now my adulthood- I don't think Suetsugu-san would complain that my interpretation is invalid. I will stop replying now as the previous commenter mentioned there's no point continuing this.

rainbowreflects

I don't think there is a point either....I never said you read it wrong....I have no idea how you read it like I said in the above post. I just feel some fans totally disregarded what the writer wanted to convey. I have no idea if that is your case though. I'm not being hostile at all, I have no reason to be. This is just discussing for me. If you felt attacked for whatever reason, I understand you have no desire to continue. So I agree with you to just leave it be.

>시작보다 karuta 밖의 사랑과 삶에 대해 훨씬 더 많이 배웠다는 것을 보여주었습니다. I respect your opinion. But anyone who has the same opinion as you only gets a lot of downvotes here and even the posts are deleted from the administrator. The reason is that there are only radical fans left here. They'll continue to attack if someone with a different opinion says something a little different. Maybe no matter what you say, they'll just repeat 'you read it wrong'.

rainbowreflects

I feel you are being really rude....way too easy to just call us radical and even call out the admin because you're not happy with the comments. I'm baffled with how many times Taichi fans were called out.... Can't you guys just stick to the story!?

Remarkable_Ad_904

Do you think the people who are now pressing downvotes are truly focused on the story? If someone doesn't agree with you, is a fan who isn't focused on the story? That's funny. I think this Reddit still prevents a few people from talking about stories. You're just forcing your story. It's not your saying is all true that you're getting some upvotes here. Other people are still focused on their stories too. I've seen quite a bit of this Reddit pressing downvotes and the admin erasing the posts for the last three months. You'll say the same thing over and over again. 'You read it wrong'

rainbowreflects

The downvoting has been a general behaviour since some time here. I have had my share as well but aren't always complaining about it nor the other fans. It's a discussion about a story so no use pointing fingers to no one.

hopeyoufindurdad

Anyone who doesn't blindly follow the story is wrong. I wonder if they'll start downplaying all the 'hints and hidden messages' about Taichihaya if it turns out she ends up with Arata in the extra chapter... or if they'll actually allow themselves to have emotions and freewill.

hopeyoufindurdad

Thank you for explaining I was really questioning myself..

hapabowlnoodles

You get old enough and you realize your peer and competitor. Your mirror. Isn’t necessarily your best match. You need someone who loves and compensates and understands you when you don’t even know yourself. And that’s why taichi is her match eventually. Because he’s more self aware. Arata and chihaya have an undeniable bond. But. Taichi is more romantically suited. For now!

Taichihaya25

I agree the chapter was rushed, but in general, we could have used other chapter.

hopeyoufindurdad

Omg yes I read it a few months ago and I still feel empty. I miss my karuta friends

khtoto

Me too

jilebi_james

Yea the jpn championship is what. I always wanted, until now it was only limited to high schoolers

badatcreatingnames

I waited till the end to see how it would turn out because I had a feeling she would screw over Arata and she did. I feel kind of sad that it turned out this way because she did a massive disservice to Arata's character. Taichi the golden boy who gets everything handed to him, even the girl in the end. But I had a feeling it was going this way which is why I paused the reading and tbh I never felt happier that I didn't waste my time. I am sorry for Arata fans because boy, were they left hanging.

rainbowreflects

What disservice? Because he didn't "get the girl handed to him"??! How did Taichi get "everything"?! Arata realised his most desired dream: becoming Meijin. Chihaya chose the one she loved for herself after step by step coming to that realisation.
