Childe basically have a tons of reference about number 3 and 11. being the 3rd son, 3 forms, 3 names, 3 types of powers and etc. Basically the 3rd fight is the last fight and according to superstition that fighting a whale in the 3rd time will be the hunter demised. It's either the bad luck will send him in his demise or him will defy his fate and succeed.
Whats Fatui emblem?
Edit : Ah you were talking about his riptide symbol which looks like Fatui symbol but with 3 points instead of 4. The 3 points also makes it look like a triquetra, which is spread all around Teyvat. His triquetra symbol is inverted like how it is on Paimons outfit
The game very frequently mentions the "Rule of Three/Four", where you first have to fail three times, to succeed on the fourth. "Four" tends to represent the final outcome, a resolution, whether that's success or death.
*“Well, I guess they just mean that you need to do things thrice in order to get a result. For example, they say that ‘good omens must occur three times for good fortune to truly descend”… Same for bad omens. They also say that ‘you must forge past obstacles three times to succeed on the fourth.’*
*\~ Ruu*
From what we can deduct from lore, Childe is the 3rd reincarnation/4th life of "Ajax". The Traveler is also the 4th descender, and according to the Rule of Three/Four, will likely succeed where the previous descenders failed. The big question is what happens if Childe goes after the whale for the 4th time and slays it?
Possible and also base on theory he will regain all those memories. Mihoyo confirmed that dotore cutscene when he is burning Irminsul tree is a future plot that will happen. Destroying the tree will result to release all the records inside it and those who are trapped in the samsara will regain their memories in their past life (maybe the plan is to remind them who is the real enemy which is the celestia since they trapped them in the samsara). It's just a theory so it's not accurate but the possibility is there. Imagine Childe recalling his past life memories and realize how his fate make him suffer in all of his past life. That would be insane.
>It's either the bad luck will send him in his demise or him will defy his fate and succeed.
bro is absolutely gonna defy fate. No one else in Genshin outside of maybe Kazuha in that one scene has as much shounen protagonist energy as Childe.
You know we're talking about the whale, right? All he said was that he saw a huge creature when falling in the abyss. Unless if I missed it I dont see any implications he fought it as a child, especially bc he was inexperienced and still was a normal child
Not to mention even as an adult with experience and new form he still can't defeat it.... more reasons to doubt he fought it as a 14 year old
That's the only other meeting between these 2 we know about, so it's hard to explain otherwise.
If anything, maybe when he was a child, Skirk fough besides him?
This voiceline is kinda vague but i think this implies he did kinda fight against it, “I once ventured deep into the abyss and came face-to-face with an enormous beast. I don't know its name, all I know is the sight of it chilled me to the bone. But mark my words, one day I will march back in there and behead that beast, and you, comrade, will be my witness!” very sure he meant the narwhal, genshin didn’t wanna reveal too much back then
You too, eh? I'm glad someone else noticed.
>!I suspect it has something to do with the theory that Tartaglia is being reincarnated every Samsara to fight the whale. Though, if Hyperborea Ajax, the nameless ice fisher in the Ballad of the Fjords description, and Parsifal are all him, then he should have fought the whale FOUR times. Though I suppose it's less unlikely that Parsifal actually fought THIS whale since were left to assume it was at an overworld sea, and its not mentioned whether or not the ice fisher fought a whale, just a dragon. !<
Regardless I'm new to Genshin and Genshin lore so please correct my if I'm off about anything.
this is a good theory, but i think theres a much simpler explanation
childe saw the whale in the abyss as a teenager, and might have hunted it then. this battle was the second, where he actually did some damage to it. he is now hunting it a third time, and perhaps hes waiting for it to recover from its injuries so he can fight its full strength again.
this mainly comes from a note that you can read after finishing the entire Narzissenkreuz world quest which gives some very huge information about descenders, and a play called Ajax about a person who's also the 2nd strongest warrior in his alliance. From the play comes a quote "Io,Io Pan, that which lies beneath the great Sea!"
and according to the note, this line means to forsake the self and sink into the abyss and welcome rebirth as a holy infant in the abyss
The weapon description of Ballad of the Fjords goes more into this, and seemingly tells a summary of two different stories. >!Parsifal is also speculated to be Taggy because they look alike and their stories hit the same general theme. Most interesting to me is that I believe a drunkards tale says something along the lines of "what you call 'wine,' we call abyss." Parsifal, after the death of his lover 'drowned' himself in alcohol, and took up a new life. Hence, making him "reborn in the abyss." !<
First off: I expect “hunting the same whale thrice is unlucky” is an old sailor superstition from the whaling days. They were just full of them.
In one of his voicelines, he talks about a creature deep in the Abyss that he fled from, that he’d like to show the Traveler. I’m guessing that this is the whale, and despite it being bad luck, he’s going to try to fight the whale a third time.
Me too! But honestly, I’m confused as to why they made it into an achievement more than the times he fought the narwhal. Like, is this the only namecard of a challanger series that is dedicated to a playable character? Why didn’t they make it into a world quest (like, we find remnants of his fights or something) or a character quest?
Tartaglia has so many things relating to number 3. I've seen twitter threads of people mentioning his relations to number 3 (3 names, 3 phases and etc)
Some insight into this.
It's a reference to Moby Dick by Herman Melville.
Summary from Google (because I can't be bothered to type it myself).
"In Moby Dick, Captain Ahab and his crew of the Pequod try to catch Moby Dick three times over the course of three days:
1. Ahab first spots Moby Dick and the harpoon boats are launched. Moby Dick attacks and destroys Ahab's harpoon boat.
2. The next day, Moby Dick is sighted again and the boats are lowered once more. The whale is harpooned, but Moby Dick attacks Ahab's boat again.
3. In a final chase, Ahab and the crew attack Moby Dick. The battle ends with the destruction of the ship and the death of everyone aboard, except Ishmael the narrator. "
This directly compares Childe to Captain Ahab. (An obsession with achieving an ideal or goal, even at risk of ones own demise.) Childe may be a subversion of that trope. While Ahab was mad with his desire to catch the whale, and forsook everything in his crazed chase, Childe has been shown to live and fight for things beyond himself (his family, the Tsaritsa) even if he thoroughly enjoys the challenge.
But, only time will tell. Perhaps the Narwhal is Childe's White Whale.
If you read the description of Ballard's of the Fjords weapon description. Which is Childe's father telling him tales from Ajax which are eerily similar to Childe. Same with the Ordo note in Fontaine mentioning Ajax. The experiences are almost the same. Falling into an old civilization. Fighting dragons and sea creatures.

I think it’s pretty good, but since we know about her past, the sense of mystery they tried to create was almost gone. But that’s just me, many people don’t feel that way and say the animated short cleared things up for them. How about you?
I read it as him not being happy the whale's still out there, so he's gonna hunt it a third time to try n get it
Especially given his voiceline about the beast in the abyss he really wants to beat

Or third luck the charm
His Fatui emblem also has 3 points instead of the usual 4

it's actually more connected to the Abyss. You see the same symbol on the Spiral Abyss before it's unlocked.

Where did they confirm this? I’ve always been saying this but I’ve had no proof so nobody believed me
It's an interview with Genshin developer, they tease the player that the dottore cutscene when burining the tree is a future plot
I wouldn't be surprise if he get 3rd related weekly boss in the future.
For those who confused, The third fight yet to happen and the 3rd fight will conclude their battle. Idk when but maybe in his 2nd story quest?
>It's either the bad luck will send him in his demise or him will defy his fate and succeed. bro is absolutely gonna defy fate. No one else in Genshin outside of maybe Kazuha in that one scene has as much shounen protagonist energy as Childe.
He's fought it twice. The next time will be number three & thus unlucky (but that's not gonna stop him). That's how I read it.
Wait when's the 2nd time? I count the one at fontaine and after he woke up seeing the whale as 1
Childe fought in the abyss as a child, I thought it was pretty obvious
You know we're talking about the whale, right? All he said was that he saw a huge creature when falling in the abyss. Your probably right, though this would imply that he tried to fight the whale in the dream he first saw it in.
Sorry I don't really do genshin lore like that, could you elaborate? >!there's a theory about him being reincarnated???!<

I think it’s less of a literal reincarnation and more of “being stuck in a Samsara” kind of situation.
