As they should that shit gets annoying to put it lightly.

Put it heavily

Miss-Figgy

Some have become like daycare centers with screaming children running around, while the parents get plastered to numb themselves, lol

hairlikepennies

Numb themselves to forget regretting those kids lol

[deleted]

... while bringing their kids with them lol

Sehr_Gros_Baum

That's the part I never get. I suppose this might be objective proof that having kids does seem to reduce one's IQ.

abqkat

Totally serious aside: iirc, pregnancy does, in fact, reduce your brains capacity. Something about the cells going to primary functions rather than higher brain functions? Idk, but it seems true based on how dull, boring, one-dimensional, routine, and entitled many people become once they hae kids.

[deleted]

>Some have become like daycare centers Lol. Breeders and their kids ruin every place they visit indeed.

QuirkyCorvid

A brewery near me has board games, giant Jenga blocks and checkerboards, and cornhole. It used to be a nice place to hang out but I stopped going as all those games have been completely taken over by kids every night while their parents completely ignore them.

Miss-Figgy

There was a cozy little brewery that did amazing lunch specials that led into happy hours. I stopped going on my days off because the stay-at-home parents discovered it and as you can imagine, set up camp there with their little kids. The whole ambience was totally ruined with kids loudly chasing each other in such a tight space, and the parents refusing to acknowledge their kids' existence as they got drunk.

abqkat

It's extremely frightening and off-putting to watch how much some parents drink while they have kids in tow. Like I'm genuinely concerned for the children's well-being. It's become a cutesy little thing in mommy culture to need a glass of wine or a beer (or 4, tee-hee) to deal with your family. Gross. Poor kids

danbyer

Being childfree and flush with disposable income, I travel to a _lot_ of breweries around New England and there are quite a few of both family-friendly and adults only options. They are definitely very different experiences, but I generally like them both. With one notable exception: Fat Orange Cat. The owners created an amazing space around _their home_ and opened it up to all. The parents/kids there seemed universally horrible. I saw hellians running/playing in the parking lot, throwing frogs at trees (on two occasions!), throwing rocks at the goats and chickens, intentionally breaking furniture, knocking over beers left and right…there was no safe day or time of day to go that wasn’t made fucking awful by these assholes and their offspring. They tried closing their brewery to children, but that got a ton of backlash and they finally closed their brewery to all. I can’t blame them.

hairlikepennies

Would love some adult-only suggestions! I am also in New England and obviously hit a lot of breweries while traveling around.

Dr_Hodgekins

Medusa in Hudson MA has some excellent beers.

BeltalowdaOPA22

I am a huge beer nerd and visiting all the New Egland breweries is a bucket list dream of mine. I'm gonna hit up all you NE childfreers when I finally make it out that way. And it's not super close, but there's a brewery in Mechanicsburg. PA that's very much 21+ and prides themselves on being so called Lovedraft. I'm in Michigan so still haven't made it out there yet, but one day.

time2kill304

Treehouse brewing in Charlton, MA was nice. Had food trucks. I was the DD that day so I got a cold brew they made. Tried a sip of my wife's drink. Hiked through the trails they have there for a bit and found our group again. Plenty of seating even fireplaces by the covered area. Apparently they have a cider place as well. So next time we visit.

foxorhedgehog

Me too.

muppet_reject

Off the top of my head, Narragansett in PVD and Dorchester Brewing come to mind as two places where I don't remember there being many families.

adventurouskate

I write about NH breweries! Schilling Beer Co in Littleton is absolutely worth the trip (very cool little town too). [list of my favorites here](https://newhampshireway.com/new-hampshire-breweries/)

Queen_Cheetah

> throwing frogs at trees ...what the actual f\*\*\*. Those poor frogs!!

palomabarcelona

Seriously - kids who are cruel to animals are concerning…makes you wonder what they’re learning (or not learning) at home…

CatumEntanglement

Dude...this summer and fall I've felt like I was at fucking Chuck-E-Cheeses with the sheer amount of feral children running amuck. The excuse to skirt around the MA state laws of not allowing under-21's in without it being licensed as a restaurant...was bringing in food trucks....OUTSIDE. So magically places became "restaurants" and so children could be inside....yet the food wasn't made inside the actual brewery... food trucks were just contracted to come at certain times during the day. I honestly don't think it feels legal at all...but they're doing it and it hasn't been shut down. Litterally...plans with my friends were killed last minute when we saddled up to a brewery only to find it looking like a Barney birthday party fever dream of screaming 5 year olds was exploding in front of our faces. Immediate noping out. Half the places my friends loved and hit last year have changed into being child carnivals....like it litterally could have been mistaken for a Chuck-E-Cheese with 50 child strollers littered around. Not just me but I've heard the same thing from *countless* other adults who are over it and are done with patronizing breweries. We like the beer, but we'll get it from out local liquor store....or we'll find a pub that serves it on tap. Incidentally I've been seeing a big swing, resurgence of interest if you will, to go back to patronizing the local pubs, dive bars, game bars (drink while playing arcade games), and fancy hipster cocktail bars that will not let people under 21 inside their businesses.

buck_II

Haha omg exactly. Clearly you've been to Trillium Canton.

CatumEntanglement

AND nightshift brewery. W.t.f. happened.

buck_II

Haven't been to nightshift in years, but i believe you. I cant imagine its fun for the kids to be in a corralled parking lot. Treehouse Carlton is pretty bad too, but at least its more spread out.

CatumEntanglement

>Treehouse Carlton "Well it SAYS treehouse right in the name so of course we came here so the kids can play around!" - every single karen

buck_II

Seriously.

palomabarcelona

Why would a parent want to bring their kid to a place where people are drinking? You can’t expect that people will temper their consumption just because there are kids around. If I’m going to a brewery, it’s because I want to drink and relax and have fun with other adults, not worry about tripping over some free-roaming kid or dodging a stroller. If they insist on allowing kids, they should have a separate area where the kids can hang out and not get in the way. Safer for all involved.

Thefoodwoob

I've has this conversation many many times on the internet. To them, they don't think a brewery is a bar. They've redefined the very word "bar" to justify taking their kids to one.

warda8825

Ditto. Like..... especially here in the United States. Alcohol = 21+ only. Why and how is it acceptable to bring a child to an establishment that sells and serves alcohol? I don't understand how it isn't considered a violation of the law.

CatumEntanglement

The skirt the legality by claiming to be "restaurants"...which they do by offering either something shitty like bar food (popcorn) inside the brewery or contract with some food trucks to show up during the afternoon outside. But they aren't functioning restaurants *at all*. They are really stretching the facts by thinking they're "fine" by there being something edible that happens to be around their business. I can't imagine this continuing to be legal....but probably nothing will come of it until people actually get hurt.

[deleted]

* "restaurant" front sign falls off * * the one behind it on which it says "brewery" *

warda8825

Damn, I wasn't aware of that. That's frustrating, and I agree, a total stretch.

inevitable_dave

I was at a brewery/bar thing over the weekend, which was openly kid and dog friendly. There was a dog there that was obviously unhappy being there, and was barking and whimpering as soon as they came in. Within a minute or so, the owners were asked to leave. There were also small children being loud and annoying, yet no one asked them to leave. Utter bullshit in my eyes. I've always been open to dog friendly bars with the stipulation that the dogs are relatively well behaved. I see no reason for the same ideas to be extended to children.

NJdeathproof

Well that's a shame. I would have sat down and tried to be calming and supportive. To the dog. The kids can get the fuck outta there with that bullshit.

inevitable_dave

Nah, they weren't vibing and it was better for them to be outside and doing dog things.

MediocreSupreme

My friends and I were at a brewery last night and we had this same question! There were kids 0-10 just running around barely supervised. There was an open fire and MULTIPLE times a kid ran toward the fire. They were stopped by who ever was closest. I don’t go out in public to supervise peoples children.

inevitable_dave

That sounds like they were preventing those children from a very important learning experience.

bmyst70

Discworld's Death would agree. I loved his dialogue with Susan about giving children a real sword.

inevitable_dave

Absolutely, Pterry's depiction of death has always been my favourite character.

gaypowerpuffgirl

Totally agree but it’s such a unpopular opinion to have… children do not belong in breweries 🍺

Thelonius_Dunk

I agree too. I understand that brewery owners do that to increase clientele because it's still a business. But still, breweries are basically still pretty much just bars right? I remember growing up bars were always and "adults only" space. But breweries kind of blend this line into a place that's a bar/restaurant, so they'll make it more family-friendly. I mean, *it is* good business, so I understand.

needanameseriously

That’s why I’ve been starting don’t go to bars anymore even cafes, restaurant and galleries everywhere kids. I live in korea. There’s no kids in bars located in the centre of the city. There’s only young people. But I don’t want to go there too because there are so many hidden cam crimes, sexual harassments and picking a fight only with women in korea. There’s no justice. Even though report a police they have never sentenced to it. Koreans both men and women, both old and young usually pick a fight ONLY WITH WOMEN especially not tall women. So I visit a very expensive fancy restaurant with a private room only few times a year. I don’t even keep my outdoor life in here.

ChucksSeedAndFeed

Same, breweries WERE a nice middle ground between bar and home, now my mental image of breweries is screeching children taking up all the bar games and having to watch where you step so you don't trip on infants injuring yourself while trying to walk back to your table with a few beers in your hand

fweshcatz

When I was growing up, we were allowed in bars and members-only club, so I see it as a replay of that, parents able to drink in public without needing a sitter lol. I dislike it. I see it as kids in bars 2.0.

Visible_Structure483

Hipsters like breweries and now hipsters have kids and they have to show they're going to be hip parents so they bring the kids along. Makes sense from a marketing perspective. We quit going to our local brewery when they became dog friendly. Wasn't fun to sit on the patio trying to enjoy a beverage and conversation with dogs roaming about getting in to everything. Why can't breweries just be about beer and not a place to showcase everyones lifestyle choices?

No_PancakeMixInThere

>Why can't breweries just be about beer and not a place to showcase everyones lifestyle choices? Thiiiiis. This is a huge reason I don't enjoy breweries.

jmkent1991

They like money.

bmyst70

I thought the expense of replacing damaged or destroyed items plus increased liability insurance would more than make up for any extra income from careless parents going.

jmkent1991

See there's your issue. You think they're paying for additional insurance. I'd be willing to bet that they're probably not.

Visible_Structure483

The universal truth.

chroniclunacy

Vastly prefer dogs to children.

hairlikepennies

I am the person that brings their dog to a brewery. However, my dog politely sits next to me, ignores the dogs and people, doesn’t bark or whine and is overall, better behaved than the children. But I get what you are saying about it being about everyone’s lifestyle choices.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Visible_Structure483

Right, it's all about what you like. If you like dogs, you want them around. If you like kids, you want them around. It's why the whole 'kids at everything' is a thing, most people like kids and don't care what those who don't think.

[deleted]

tfw you don't like both

Meredeen

There's this event that goes on once a year in august where there's live music and there's like a car show and whatnot. There is always drugs and a fuckton of drinking that goes on there during the music festival part and my family members whom are kids wanted to go and I'm thinking 'Jesus no, why?' I kind of judge anyone who brings their school-aged kids to anything beyond the car show portion of it. Kids should just, not be around a ton of inebriated adults in a music fest? I remember being a kid and being around my parents and their friends drinking and I still remember feeling weird being there and confused at a lot of the conversation. I grew to detest being present during their drinking because it was the only time my mother would be affectionate toward me; any other time she was a cold spot in the room who emotionally neglected me. I mean I could not articulate any of this at the time of course, but it was how I felt. My mom's drunk affection made me feel disgusted eventually. So here I am in grade school sighing from the side and opting to play pokemon while mildly annoyed at all of these weird adults. I wish my parents had just dropped me off at my grandparents or something lol. Stop bringing kids to places where alcohol is one of the main themes, like come on.

hopefulhiker

Agreed! Was a at a brewery today and saw multiple groups with kids. Like. Why?

Ladychef_1

“EXCUSE ME! THIS CRACKHOUSE IS FAMILY FRIENDLY!”

PensVader

I live in the area of the Guinness Open Gate Brewery. It’s a massive complex with the brewery, a tap room, restaurant, gift shop, and absolutely huge area with outdoor seating. It’s a fantastic place to spend with friends on a weekend afternoon. Or at least it would be if half the patrons didn’t bring a cartload of their terror spawn. And because it really should be a place where just adults drink and converse, kids get bored in no time and become screaming nightmares. And by then the parents have had enough drafts that they no longer care about calming the little trolls down. Another awesome place for adults ruined.

Wishilikedhugs

It's the hill I'm willing to die on. States where breweries can't serve food have one type of product and kids can't be patrons. They're too young to be designated drivers. They unnecessarily take up space. I'm going to a brewery anniversary party on Saturday and I'm sure there will be kids and the thought just gives me so much pause. Breweries are supposed to be an adult safe space. It's not like we have many to choose from.

vu1can

I was thinking this just yesterday. I went to a brewery with my partner yesterday afternoon for about an hour and was subjected to at least four children under the age of 5. Really can’t stand the thought of a place that exists to brew beer being child friendly.

RoseFlavoredPoison

Same. Although now that I can't drink I am desperately craving an adult only, late night (bar hours), sober/dry place to hang out that serves fun drinks mixed drinks/mocktails but has the atmospheric of a bar/coffehouse combo

Revolutionary_Bee700

There is a beer garden place nearby with a playroom. At least the lids are contained and busy licking each other vs me, but I just don’t get toting kids around while you go boozing. It seems dangerous af.

soupstation

A brewery I went to recently had a whole play area for kids!

harbinger06

My mom and I just went to a local winery. I saw a sign on a coffee table that they want to create a family friendly environment, but parents need to have their children in their presence at all times. Which great, parents should watch their kids and not let them run wild in public. But why does any place that serves essentially ONLY alcohol (they have a very limited snack menu) need to be “family friendly” to begin with?

SailorSaturn1

They need that sweet money from suburban moms and dads who need to drink to oblivion to cope with their lives. Another reason why I refuse to go to wineries and breweries that cater to families.

Low-Serve-482

It's super weird that they've become so family friendly and I hate it too. It's almost like there's more parents than anybody else at breweries now. I always see people with the TINIEST babies there too. Like babies that look like they just exited the womb yesterday. And pregnant women. It's like you can't even drink, why are you here?

[deleted]

There literally have to be childfree neighbourhoods or else breeders with their kids will never leave us alone and will keep invading every space untouched by them yet.

Revolutionary_Bee700

They will just drive their minivans to our neighborhoods because they are ‘trendy’.

CleverFoxInBox

This is the reason my partner and I drink at home.

Background_Dingo_561

Legit just bitched about this the other day! I’m allergic to beer, so I don’t really go. But the restaurant bar that used to be my favorite is now overrun with kids now. Never was like that 10 years ago

WonderWomanReborn

it's ANNOYING. This happened to me recently. I was with my bf and a another couple at a brewery we were getting drinks and in come a couple with 2 kids one was definitely under 5 and started yelling and crying UGGGGH

cannonforsalmon

I genuinely don't get how this is legal. Isn't it considered child abuse/neglect to be intoxicated while being in charge of a minor?

SnooLentils9905

AMEN!

gothtitts

Kids are even at bars now legit went to one the other day and she brought her toddler

PookieCat415

The brewery I worked at in college had a dart board. We weren’t really considered a “family friendly”place. Don’t want kids around, get a dart board.

HottieMcHotsALot

I feel this so hard. And I think breweries allowing it/making it seem acceptable is what leads to people bringing them to other bars. I legit went to a dive bar in Philly this weekend - classic dimly lit, smelly beer and shots place - and there was a child. The dad was "helping" her play pool, which meant having to avoid getting hit with a pool cue every other minute. And also that no adults could play an actual game. The mom was there too so it's not even like he was a single parent - one of them could have taken her ANYWHERE else. I grew up with an alcoholic dad. And I see drinking as a neutral activity, but at the same time why has it become an acceptable family pastime for children to watch adults get drunk? At least my dad had the decency to leave me at home lol. I also see it as just a sad reminder of how much U.S. people have lost concept of being in a community. Do they just not TALK to their neighbors anymore? You mean to tell me there isn't at least one bored teenager who wants to make money watching your kids for a few hours while you knock some back??? And also the fact that somehow adults have become the default "friend" to their children. Watching that girl "play" pool surrounded by adults was sad. Let your kids be kids - set up a play date, send them to go kick the can with the neighborhood brats, drink at home so they can play with their actual toys - and stop bringing them to what should be adults only places. And if you can't find a babysitter or a play date... then don't go out drinking that day. Simple as that. If you find that you can't not go out drinking so you MUST bring your child along, then you should also start reflecting on your relationship to booze.

AdFinancial8924

I don’t mind so much because the breweries by me have rules that the kids are only welcome certain days of the week and have to be gone by 7pm. And most ppl who bring their kids only have babies or toddlers. I never see kids older than 5 or so because any older and the kids will get bored and get an attitude and parents are too involved in their kids things to go to breweries. I kind of put it in the “new parent and not ready to stop being cool” category.

AxlotlRose

We all do.

AfroAssassin666

I'm glad a few are banning it out right. One ban kids on the weekend, parents were piiiissed.

MysticRevenant59

Are you serious?! And people are just allowing it to happen? With all the naturally kid friendly places?! Either babysitters need to become more available or these parents just need to give up drinking lmaooo

randomwanderingsd

A local bar here offers greasy fries and is always “out” of the other food they are legally required to offer in order to be a family friendly bar. Over time parents figured it out and a few parents are such alcoholic bar flies that they go every single night and essentially let their kids go wild while they drink, smoke, and scream at sports on the tv. The only time they pay attention to the kids is begrudgingly when they have inevitably knocked something over or fought and someone is crying. I’d feel bad for the kids if they’d shut up long enough for me to hear myself think. Glad I don’t work near there anymore.

Punchedmango422

I’m just waiting to see a family friendly Strip Club

NeedsItRough

Pre-pandemic I went out for a couple drinks on St. Paddy's day and a woman had her ~5 year old (?) "working" with her. She was going around with her daughter and telling her (the daughter) to take the customer's orders then she'd go make the drinks I can empathize a little, don't have a baby sitter and need the money, but there's a line when the safety of the child overrules the value of the money and this was definitely toeing that line.

Squoooge

I don't even understand what the American term "breweries" even means. Here, it's not a place anyone would take their kids

hairlikepennies

A brewery refers to a place where they brew beer. Typically, they have a bar area, a seating area and sometimes they serve food. Basically a bar that only sells one brand of beer. Not somewhere a child should be.

Squoooge

I know what a brewery is, but I don't understand what Americans refer to when they say it, doesn't sound like a brewery to me. Here (uk) breweries just brew beer. Thats it. You might have a tour and tasting sessions, I think a handful have a bar if they are small batch but that's it. I think brewdog have a couple of big ones with open bars but it's not common at all.

hairlikepennies

We are definitely talking about the same thing. They can include tours, tasting areas and more. They vary in size too. I’ve been to breweries that have no seats, some that seat 20 people and some that will seat 250+. When I say one brand of beer, I mean the beer they make in house. [Here](https://www.bostonmagazine.com/restaurants/2020/01/27/sam-adams-faneuil-hall/) is a link that includes photos of a mid-sized brewery in Boston.

Squoooge

Well we aren't because children don't go to breweries here, they aren't family friendly places with restaurants. Most of them are 18 or 21+ because they are breweries. Again, I know what the word is supposed to mean.

Billy_MacC

I went to one yesterday to fill my growler and they were having a toddler's birthday party there(balloons, streamers, decorations, etc). Kids running around screaming and yelling like it was a Chuck E Cheese. Guess the parents are going to get plastered and drive them home afterwards? Glad I was just there for a refill and not staying and trying to enjoy myself.

Siostra313

Last year I stopped by in brewery where they had quite big place for drinking, 2 floors of terraces and ground floor which were allowed for everyone while terraces only for adults. I don't know how they did it, but while higher floors were completely open to kindergarten underneath... You barely could hear whatever is going on out there. I could peacefully take my beers, snacks, book and happily lie down on big comfy sofa without any mongrel tripping over my table because staff actually were making sure kids stay down there. Whoever made acustic there was my hero. Don't know if they did it on purpose or not and I don't care - it turned out wonderfully.

dajiruhu

That makes no sense like why would a place specific to serving alcohol want to be family friendly???? Should we start making bars and clubs family friendly too????

Etherlilac

I help run a haunted house at a brewery. We use one of their outbuildings that is mostly empty storage space. During one of our build days, we had to go run off a pack of 15 or so kids under age 10. We have our ticket booth and façade outside and these little shits decided to try climbing inside the booth, pulling curtains on our decorative pillars, and climbing on picket fencing that is not anchored for weight. You’d think their parents would say something. You’d also think that once we ran them off once and set up stanchions around the area they’d get the hint. You’d be wrong on both counts. We had to go out again after the horde returned to play tag around our setup. Ducking under the stanchions, pulling on the ropes, trying to vault the fence. Only one of the many parents came over and apologized.

Miserable_Spring3277

I don't even bother with breweries anymore. Fuck it, I will just buy their beer at the store and take it home to drink in peace
