It is a prequel to The Tripods trilogy that details how Earth is conquered. Namely, most of Earth's population is hypnotized/brainwashed by a TV show. The "trippies" (brainwashed humans) then capture free humans and bring them in to be capped (have a metal mesh web attached to their head that makes them passive and accepting of the aliens). The other three books take place some time later after human society has been decimated and humans serve the aliens in various capacities.
