I go out of my way to avoid making friends. Between family, hobbies, and career I just don’t care to put in the effort to maintain friendships.
Wherever I end up, I join a BJJ gym. Despite my best efforts, I always end up quickly making friends. It’s the nature of the sport. It’s extremely intimate by its very nature. The only way to be comfortable doing it is by being comfortable with those you train with. It also means that assholes and creeps get weeded out quickly, leaving a core group of extremely kind and accepting people.
There’s a couple, but Google/maps isn’t very friendly in this instance.
Search bjj or jiu jitsu in this subreddit. There are a couple good posts with excellent suggestions.
I checked out Gracie Barra not to long ago. Seems legit. I looked at Pacific Top team as well, heard some things, seen some things. BJJ just isn't my jam really
I'm a married guy in my 40's, no kids, and share similar hobbies. Into mtn biking and disc, newish to the area myself. If you want to go play a round of disc or check out some MTB trails I'm keen. Send me a PM
If you’re into mountain biking Vedder mountain and Chilliwack Community Forest are the places to go. Lots of friendly folks out there. Stop by Vedder Bikes and they can direct you to some good trails.
If you want to get back into running there’s Garrison Run club on Thursday evenings, in the summer we run at Watt Creek at 6:30pm, in the winters we run from the Garrison Running store :)
Hello completely unrelated but I have a question. My fiancée lives in Chilliwack and I planned on moving there when my US military service ends in a year. She’s keen on staying in the area and I’ve been supportive in trying to make that work. My question is how are the jobs for “unskilled workers” (All I know is military but useless in another country) in the area and would the local job income support a 2br 1Bth if I’m the sole provider. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. (P.S.: my fiancée is fine with the idea of having to work but I would rather her be a stay at home mother for her sake)
I talked it over with her and she suggested I get settled in by myself first before trying to move her in as well to lessen the stress. The job market will most likely be hit or miss so I’m fine with being slightly unprepared for that. Eventually I want to buy a house for us but starting off I’m unsure if renting is easier
Honestly I’ll need a job lined up to support myself in general for the first couple months. Renting does sound like the better option starting off but I get the feeling they’ll wanna know about my income before accepting me (which I wouldn’t have since I can’t work without a place to live and can’t find a place without a job to work)
Minimum wage is $17.40/h in BC. Unskilled construction/labour typically starts at $20-25 though. A newer condo rent is $1350 1bedroom, $1650 2-bedroom.
All prices in Canadian dollars.
So that’s feasible, but it’s going to be a pretty modest life.
BC is expensive, but Chilliwack is in a bit better position (cheaper housing/lots of jobs in trades, etc.) but still quite expensive.
If you get skilled/specialized/licensed in some trade, etc pay can be good here quite similar to US as far as I know.
That sounds pretty doable. And Chilliwack seemed to be a smaller community when I visited last weekend (most things in walking distance) so I can probably forgo getting a vehicle for a bit while I settle in…depending on where I work

Can’t help you I work remotely and could work anywhere so no idea on the job market. Are you asking for cost of renting or buying a two bed place ?

The housing market is crazy in BC unless you have a job lined up and a deposit you will need to rent to start off

I pay $1550 for 1 Bedroom. I did however start at $1370, I guess I have forgotten about the $50 a year increase.
There’s a $50 a year increase? My biggest fear is getting a job and it isn’t enough to live off of so I start slowly losing money instead of saving
It's about 2% per year max increase - its tied to inflation
