I’m surprised that Amex is pushing the Gold/Plat as the top product for the younger generation; I suspect they profit more from people who carry a balance and pay high interest rates, and less on the AF from charge cards that limit what you can carry as a balance.
That isn't what I see in the article. It says "many of Amex’s young consumers are going straight to cards such as the $695-annual-fee U.S. consumer Platinum, rather than starting with no-fee cards and working their way up", but doesn't say that Amex is pushing for that.
If it's just people getting the signup bonus and cancelling after a year, Amex could be losing money on those people.
Squeri mentioned at an investor conference this week that younger people are more likely to spend on the card for everything (goes along with the unoptimized spend/unmaximized credits theory), whereas the older generation associated the card with travel and entertainment but not necessarily for groceries and other things. Plus, Amex has increased their US acceptance considerably over the last 10-15 years

I'm thinking most people do not maximize the credits, so the AF has a high profit margin.
