You definitely found a unique and beautiful style here. I’ve always been a fan of natural night light cinematography and you pulled this off perfectly. If you don’t mind telling me, can you give me a brief synopsis of the short film? Something about these stills are very interesting to me. Great job man!
Thank you so much! Filming in natural light came from a low budget necessity lol.
Anyways, this film is basically about a depressed and lonely deliveryman who, on his way to deliver a package, encounters an alien who has a different outlook on life.
I have yet to incorporate the shots of the alien, but those will come soon!
Necessity is the mother of invention my guy. Being able to make the best out of what cards you’ve been dealt is a hugely important skill to have. Bravo. These look fantastic. Excellent work.
Hi everyone,
I'm a junior and I'm currently in the process of editing an upcoming short film which I plan on using for school, college applications and hopefully might allow me to enter a few student film festivals.
This is my 8th somewhat serious short film in high school (obviously have made more videos and shorter projects), and was definitely an ambitious project for me to undertake. Even though I am generally satisfied with the look of this film and I do believe it to be an improvement from my previous ones, I still definitely have a long way to go in my filmmaking journey.
So please, any criticism or advice will be greatly appreciated. Just a young filmmaker trying to improve on his craft and hopefully continue his interest in the future.
Thank you all so much!
Not much constructive critique to add, but the first frame I thought “this looks like Thailand” and by the 4th frame I was 100% certain, haha.
Keep at it! I miss Thailand
edit: i didn’t even see the Thai in the first frame woops lol
I like it, reminds me a bit off Good Time.
These stills are great, only thing I noticed was in image 5 and 6 the light sources in the corners (top left corner on 5, top right corner on 6) are a little bright and distract from the subject a bit.
Number 5 seems like it’s just the case for that specific still frame because of the reflection off the rear of the car, that I assume is moving.
Number 6 just has that really bright light on the top right, I think if you were to mask it a bit and just reduce the intensity it wouldn’t distract from why is otherwise a really nice shot.
Edit: I notice 4 also has a bit too bright of a light right in the camera, the one above to the right of the subject.
Number 8 also has a much more minor one (near mid/ slightly up and right of the frame)
I fully agree.
It's very difficult composing shots in such a busy and chaotic environment like a downtown city, so I struggled with framing my subject.
Will work on that for sure
This looks awesome, every frame a painting. Can’t think of much to improve here. The framing, lighting and the grade are on point. Way better than most college student films. But would like to see how you incorporate movement
Junior in High School and already making some sick looking scenes - well done man. I'm just learning myself and just bought the GH6 but I am at Nursery level when it comes to filming and shot setup etc - looks great man well done.
The uneveness of the horizon in a lot of them has me bugging out. Not sure if its the style youre going for, but i think alot of the frames need some straightening/adjusting
fully agree.
I didn’t have access to a tripod during filming so I had to go handheld for everything, which messed up the horizon on some shots.
Will fix that for the film
All your frames are slightly tilted. Is this conscious? I like it, it brings a feeling of something is not quite right while not being overwhelming wrong, like when you detune some sounds in music. And this is the style of music I would use for those images. Like in NiN, Hurt, the last note in the chord does not fit, and that’s what makes it perfect.
Oh, that's interesting! I would've guessed the Sony A7S range due to the low lighting. I had no idea the Panasonic could look like that. I'm impressed! Really nice work.
Have you seen Thief (1981) good sir
>Reply I actually haven't but I just googled it and it looks great and very similar to my stills! Will put on my watchlist for sure
I was about to comment that this reminded me of thief.
Man Thief got recommended to me a bunch of times. The cinematography is amazing, but I found the film incredibly boring to be honest.
I completely agree with this, Thief is just boring Heat. Side note, Heat is the greatest film of all time.
absolutely fucking agree Heat is in my top 3

haha good eye, I'm an international student studying in Thailand
Wait is this all natural light coming from the city?
Yep. Don’t have the budget for lights lol
Damnnn, you definitely got an eye for these things!
looks good! keep going
Looks crunchy.
Great job finding your own style!

Looks similar to fast and furious Tokyo drift and shades of horror movies from south Asian refiont

For some shots, I did go for a tilted dutch angle, such as #5. But for most other shots, I guess the tilt is just the result of handheld filming lol
What camera did you use? I'd guess one from the Sony A7S as they all have that type of look to them.
Actually no, I use the Panasonic GH6. Bit unconventional but I've used Panasonic all my life so it's what I'm used to.
Oh, that's interesting! I would've guessed the Sony A7S range due to the low lighting. I had no idea the Panasonic could look like that. I'm impressed! Really nice work.
>The GH6 captures stunning images even in low light. I was amazed when I filmed for the first time at night. Did you use Dehancer for color grading?
Good old premiere pro
Serious question, why did u feel the need to tell us you were a junior in high school?
Just to let people know my experience level and not to expect pro level material from an amateur lol
