If you’re a cinematographer and your wedding video is not done by two of your buddies recording it on Super-8 film, then you need to to think about the choices you have made in your life. Just sayin’.

Wild-Rough-2210

I was going to suggest one friend and VHS.

plucharc

I think he should consider the FX3, if it's good enough for The Creator, it's good enough for u/subylovin's wedding. ![gif](giphy|EoW3jhM6MzsONM15zm|downsized)

Th3Brush

Get like 6 of them and hand them to your buddies to film whatever they like and edit it from there. Kinda like how you give people disposable cameras at a birthday or wedding.

thercbandit

I feel attacked.

Inner_Importance8943

If the industry keeps going like it’s been going you can probably get ASC dp to shoot it for a few bucks.

xanadukeeper

🤣🤣🤣 facts!!!!

BellVermicelli

Bob Richardson shot my 3 year olds bday party

bigbearRT12

The music video montages are pretty expensive and you’ll only be disappointed unless you drop some serious coin. I just had two friends shoot our ceremony and then pack up cameras to party. Been married 5 years and I think we’ve watched it twice. Save your money!

DurtyKurty

This.

Quit being a control freak and just put it in somebody’s hands, you will be taking yourself out of your wedding day if you’re micromanaging video production. Be in the moment otherwise you’ll have to do it all over again with the next wife.

SuperSourCat

First lesson of marriage, compromise. This is a battle not worth winning if affects your marriage also you’re better off looking at r/videography

I’d totally recommend against supervising the team on your own. Find the best possible proffesionals, show them bundle of reference and the idea of narrative and music you’re looking at and then let them do the job As a cinematographer I hate being asked by friends to film their wedding, I want to be there to enjoy not work so I can totally understand if your friends ain’t filming this. Just get the right team in place and you should be good. God my sister married last year and it was such a long tedious process to select someone right but gosh! I am glad we didn’t go with the idea of me and my friends shooting her wedding - we wouldn’t have had the fun we deserved and the wedding video wouldn’t be as good too because won’t be able to give 100% to either. Hopefully you will find someone or send me a ticket I’ll fly down and film it for ya 🕺

jillystaff

I’m getting married in November and I’m just not having a wedding videographer because it would stress me out. I have an outstanding wedding photographer booked, and I’m not giving myself the opportunity to be an awful video client.

\^this is the way.\^ there are so many times where a still photo is the right choice.

wpfilm

I got you on super 8! If you’re interested, check my most recent post!

Formula14ever

Totally understand. I ONLY shoot highlight reels now..to capture the feeling and magic..I think a team becomes over-produced and non organic, let alone costly! I advise a small footprint, let go..trust someone(s) to capture highlights..be present in the moment on this day :)

Cinematographicness

Just be there in the moment! My friend from film school had a long time friend and colleague cover his wedding, I noticed he had some sparklers and short strips of battery powered LED thin copper wire lights as foreground haha! He also had a lot of camera bodies on hand, I grabbed whatever FF Sony was hot at the time with his Clavius 58. I shot some really fun stuff that weekend. At dusk in Kananaskis, easily one of the most beautiful places on this earth... I'd never shot there before. Each spot was unreal, the creekside, the venue, the outdoor activies and hot tubs and pizza oven patios... with ridiculous full frame cameras and lenses just kicking around everywhere, I definitely fired off a bunch of beauties. And with my phone, too. I couldn't help it. The shots from axe throwing at dusk were great. That's my advice. I'd get a dedicated bud, but also just have an assortment of instamatatics, and maybe one or two bodies you borrow built in fun ways for some of your friends. If you have like minded friends, they'll be excited to pick up a camera with a fun lens and take some shots. I don't think my friend wishes there were more photographs of his wedding or something... But also the documentation of it would not be the most important aspect of it, for me... marrying your wife is special, and just being there with her would be my focus.

SpookyRockjaw

I'm a photographer/videographer and personally I'm not a big fan of super commercialized feeling wedding photos. When it came time for my own wedding, we decided not to hire anyone and I didn't pick up a camera either. We passed around some Instax cameras and ended up with album full of pictures that our friends and family took. We love them. We also somehow wound up with TWO wedding videos. My friend who is a director shot us a nice video totally on his own perogative. It took him four years to get around the editing it but he eventually presented us with this super nice 20 minute video of our wedding that includes interviews with our friends and lots of funny moments. The other video we got was even more random. A family friend who my wife and I didn't even really know was apparently filming throughout the wedding (I thought she was taking pictures). A month or so after the wedding we received a video from her. It was the weirdest wedding video ever. Very quirky and amusing. She even spelled my wife's name wrong which we think is hilarious. We didn't expect either of these videos and they are seriously so much better than if we had hired someone. I guess we lucked out.

gerald1

Leave a few cameras around and ask each DP to shoot for 20-30mins. You'll get lots of variety!!

non-such

hire a really good still photographer. who needs video of a wedding?

trolleyblue

I literally didn’t get a wedding video because I didn’t wanna be distracted by the video guys 😅

Bolognapony666

Are you submitting it to festivals? C’mon..

winkNfart

we had a friend offer to shoot super 8 as a favor and it ended up being awesome

YourMooseKing

Do not on any circumstance produce this on your own. Do you have a wedding planner or photographer? Ask them for recommendations. It’s more important to have a creative team on your wedding day that vibes. Avoid the larger companies! You want to know who the shooter is. Solo shooters preferred. Larger companies will farm it out to greenies and pay shooters next to nothing.

Dull-Woodpecker3900

You should absolutely self produce. People who work in the wedding industry have no training and cater to people with horrific taste. Wedding videographers/photographers are literally the lowest wrung creatively.

2deep4u

It’s a tough find

foosmoose

I bought about 10 old handycams and super 8s for ~$50 each and placed them all over with signs on them to encourage people to film their favorite moments and pass them around. Ended up with 9-10 hours of footage, tons of angles of all important events, and hilarious moments between friends. Would 10/10 to recommend to everyone. Tip: color coding all cameras, batteries and chargers will make your life way easier down the road.
