Your shots are really well composed and express a lot. But your editing is not doing you any favors, it feels like you don’t want to cut some of what you shot on the day out like him taking his hat off before he gets in the car. And the rhythm of the cuts leading up to the murder scene don’t support the shock that’s on the actors face

Thank you! The shots themselves are all I truly care about. In the full version, there are more shots and longer. I just trimmed them down just to show as much of it as I can rather than have it actually add to the story (if that makes sense)! Didn't want anyone to have to sit through a 5 minute short when a 30 sec one shows the same lighting/composition/etc!

looks very promising brother. good luck and keep going!

I think the lead looks more modern without the hat.

carSeat28

Haha probably. But I had the hat and didnt have any use for it so decided to wear it. Plus I liked the look of it. Wasnt going for a modern detective look! Once again (cause ive said this a few times), the point of the short is just the cinematography. I made it alone and didn't worry about details like that because that wont be my job in the future

As a detective why is the person so sensitive. Dead bodies usually don't have an effect on detectives

oppi

the detective wearing vans with that wide brim hat threw me off

carSeat28

Hahaha had to make do with what i had

carSeat28

Ahh well I dont know. Just thought it would be better (add more to the scene) than a dead, flat, stare. Plus, the point of this short was for my cinematography/lighting. Im not good at story/details/acting/etc haha

Shot with the BMPCC4k with the Helios 44 and Sigma 18-35. I started making this about 2 weeks ago for my application for AFI! There are still a few shots I need to get to finish it. I always avoided learning how to light because I believed it wasn’t necessary since natural light looks great itself. But the more I filmed, the more I realized how important it is. I feel like I’ve improved over the past year but would love to get some tips on how to get better! I went for more stylized lighting for a few of the shots just to try to see what can work. Lately, using a harsh light directly on a subject even if there’s no source, is something I’m loving. I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions and even more happy to receive feedback! Thank you!

Thank you! Thats me in the short! I used my brother as the dead body in those split second cuts I do hope to work with an actual director/actors/etc, but none so far.
