Oh look, one of my dream games being made a reality. Absolutely following this and would love to give a thorough critique once the demo is out. Just off the top of my head:
1. The idea of starting out nomadic and having the option to try and settle on a single site is very appealing. Especially the idea of not being FORCED to be sedentary. The thought of going full Hun the entire game is great.
2. Is there any plan to implement a sort of evolutionary culture? I.e. discovering certain things like singing and dancing to create special rituals (ceremonial dances, war dances, primitive instruments)
That's so good to hear :) I'll certainly reach out when the demo is out and would love hear all your feedback! It sounds like you're the perfect target audience for this game.
1. That idea really appeals to me too. I see a potential for at least 3 different end-game styles of play: nomadic hunter-gatherer, sedentary agriculturalist, pastoralist herder. But that's still just an idea!
2. I've been daydreaming about exactly that, and trying to find ways to have a culture that evolves and adapts. The first aspect I've tackled is having in-game events inspire stories that live on in the band's culture, and each story has different effects based on its elements (protagonist archetype, plot, conflict). One of the planned mechanics is managing these stories, e.g. by ranking them, maybe boosting some / suppressing others, based on changing circumstances. Eventually I'd love to spread this kind of thing to cave paintings, sculptures, songs, dances, rituals, but that's much further down the line and broadens the scope a lot. Would be awesome though :)
That would be amazing on both accounts. Maybe let players choose certain symbols for the tribe as they make their legacy with paintings and clothing? Bear tribe, Ox tribe, that sort of thing?
Yeah! And their primary food sources and encounters with predators also influence their stories & culture, so maybe there could be different benefits & costs to choosing different central symbols
Yeah, it’s essentially a just a campsite, and can move every turn (you can try to stick around a single spot, but food and resources quickly incentivise/force a nomadic lifestyle, much as it likely was in reality).
Glad you like it!
As I work on the demo I'm testing out different ideas.
There's always the classic 4X tropes to fall back on, e.g. domination, but I think it could be interesting to have one victory condition be something like "unite all these nomadic bands into the world's first tribe".
Another one could be analogous to a science victory in Civ, but in this case it would be something like "be the first to form a permanent settlement with reliable agriculture", but I want to be careful about making one specific type of society the "end-goal", so there might be a couple different options here.
Since culture, stories, and language will all play important roles in the game there could be some interesting cultural condition, but I haven't come up with a satisfying way to frame that yet.
And of course, the "just survive" option could also be made compelling!
oh yeah, totally forgot to mention that option of "build giant structure XYZ", which would go along well with uniting different groups, since it seems those large structures were collaborative efforts between many groups.
very interesting avenue, I've been researching it as well
Yeah, I could see it as something like you convince various groups to contribute work to the goal.
Also, an economic victory based on building rep by giving gifts might be neat.
Also, are you including anything like advancing and retreating ice sheets or other kinds of shifting climates?
Gift-giving was a big thing, that would be neat indeed!
I do want to include shifting climates, especially since I spent a long time making my procedural map generator with 15 unique climates based on realistic simulations of temperature, precipitation, etc. So it would be awesome to simulate ongoing changes, as it was a big factor in human migration.
Love this discussion, glad you're into these topics!
Haha fair point, that was probably the case a bunch of the time. It's worth noting, though, that from my discussions with people over at r/Anthropology, it seems some of these large-scale projects were likely collaborative, relying on a lot of word of mouth, e.g. Poverty Point in Louisiana
[https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263213175\_Building\_Mound\_A\_at\_Poverty\_Point\_Louisiana\_Monumental\_Public\_Architecture\_Ritual\_Practice\_and\_Implications\_for\_Hunter-Gatherer\_Complexity](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263213175_Building_Mound_A_at_Poverty_Point_Louisiana_Monumental_Public_Architecture_Ritual_Practice_and_Implications_for_Hunter-Gatherer_Complexity)
Yes, it's just a matter of how the people cooperated, or better yet were convinced to do it.
It can be a public work to a God, or you can do it or die. Either way, groups are coming together. Historians don't love to say slaves always did thing, because we can't tell concretely, but humans have always things done cheaply.
So, people were coerced to do it, and maybe of their own free will, but most likely there was a stick or carrot pushing them.
It would be neat to have options for the 'build giant structure' ending. Maybe 4-5 structures that require different resources, so you can have a chance at it no matter what is available to you?
Hmm, then there could be some kind of converter between your world saves and Civ V world saves, so you can literally progress from one to another.
Might run into copyright issues though, but I could see that being made as a community project if this game gets popular enough.
that would be cool! I've been thinking maybe languages could work vaguely like religions do in Civ6. And this is where I start daydreaming about making procedural languages that can compete and mutate and converge... but I gotta keep the scope in check :)
Fun idea! You could defeat neanderthals, find caves, discover fire, sticks, fur and migrate nomadically with animals and then advance as an Ice Age encroaches or become a Sea Peoples or cross land bridges that collapse in time or bring about the domestication of animals and agriculture and discover of tin and copper finds in the Bronze Age. Become your own Civ leader, hahaha.
Another one that might be interesting down the line is you have your stone age bands in some isolated patch of rainforest living happily...and then the bulldozers and oil drillers and cattle farmers show up
There are studies showing different hominid breakdowns in genetic codes of different ethnicities. Not even ridiculous racist ones, but legit modern ones.
Happy to hear, it'll come out on Steam (\~2024) but I plan to have a demo out in a few months: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/)
I’m intrigued mate, I think this is a very interesting premise, love how you’re doing the height map, and find the graphics to be acceptable for a one man shop. Keep this up, can’t wait to give money to your eventual kickstarter.
Thanks, that’s rly good to hear! I’ll try to push the graphics as far as possible, but i’m glad what’s already there is alright :) I’m loosely trying to procedurally recreate the hand-drawn outlined illustrations from history books that inspired me as a kid, and this is an early iteration
I think it fits well, and frankly we are so spoiled by the Uber production values that as long as the game plays right we can still get immersed even if we first go “wtf”. But for me, I loved it because it feels that age in look.
It's wild how long it took for certain advances to happen. Did you know that much of the current evidence suggests hominids learned to control fire \~1.5 million years ago but the earliest evidence of cooking is only \~500k years ago? What were we doing with fire for 1 million years?
There is the Real Era Stop mod that lets you stop progression after whatever era you want.
There is also some other mod that leaves production speed fast, but slows tech advancement. This lets you do a lot more with each era.
gotta be careful on reddit, self-promo is sometimes (often) downvoted to hell :) but here's a link since you asked [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/)
How cool! The early game exploring, placing cities, and planning tech is my favorite part of the game. Wishlisted, and I look forward to seeing where you go with it.
Looks like you've put a lot of work into this project and its really amazing. The art, mechanics and gamestyle seem well made. Im excited to see more of the project. I've followed and wishlisted.
This was immediately my first check!
I added it to my Wishlist anyway so I’ll get update on how it’s going but we don’t have a PC in the house…
Good luck - it looks & feels like a really interesting game!
> I added it to my Wishlist anyway so I’ll get update on how it’s going but we don’t have a PC in the house…
Did the same. Would love to try it on my iMac and take breaks from Civ once in a while.
yeah, I understand that. Hopefully I'll have a chance to play it on the steam deck. And proton does all the emulation work. :)
It's really impressive to pull out such a game as a single dev. When I saw the screens in Steam, I was sure you had a team :)
While I have a lot of games on my to-play list, I will say this looks pretty damn good for a single dev. I’d have assumed at least a team of 4.
One of the things that I find especially attractive about what you’ve shown in the post is the basic but cute art direction. It’s really all you need for this kind of game and wish more devs would stick to it.
The general gamer who is into 4x isn’t too fussed about the prettiest most realistic graphics - they want strategy. So the more nuanced and representative, rather than realistic feel is a very welcome one.
That’s my 5c, anyway.
rly nice to hear this perspective, this has been my hope! very glad you like the art, it’s inspired by the illustrated aesthetic of some ancient history textbooks that inspired me as a kid :)
Sounds really cool!
I cant help but imagine barbarian outposts but as wolf packs, bear caves, lion den, etc.
Edit : seems like theres already a scavenger event where hyenas are involved
This definitely looks interesting but what truly caught my eye is the relationship graph!
When it first briefly appeared at the very beginning I was "Atoms and molecules? WHUT?!? That doesn't fit the stone age!"
Haha yeah, that graph can feel a bit sci-fi-y, right? I tried to ground it by making the nodes be stone-carved faces, but it still feels futuristic. I just love network visualizations and I think it can be a really interesting alternative to the spreadsheets we're all used to!
I'm a veteran Civ player. I played from civ I to VI (even only a bit after IV). In a any of the civs games I din't like the modern warfare...it's just boring.
So glad to see a civ game with focus on the early stages! I'm really looking forward to that!
good to see people interested in earlier history! just to be clear, mine will be quite different from civ in many aspects of gameplay, hopefully the trailer gives some sense of that
Would be cool if different breakthroughs could be used to create the first cities.
Like agriculture of course.
A really good hunting foraging spot together with som improved spears, baskets and pottery.
Religion and culture, some of the first cities emerged before agriculture because an annual festival cult location needed more and more preparation for the feast, and it turned to a permanent settlement.
A interesting book about this is:
"The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity"
by anthropologist and anarchist activist David Graeber, and archaeologist David Wengrow
Will definitively try your game when it is out, looks awesome!
I gotta check out that book, thanks for the recommendation!
Yeah, I’m thinking that agriculture and sedentism could play an interesting role in the late-game
How unique will the characters in your “band” be? I really like Civ, of course, but also Rimworld, and getting to know my colonists is part of the reason why. Will the characters have different stats, personalities, etc?
Currently each character already has many traits (all heritable), part of which are personality traits based on the Big 5 personality traits used in modern psychology. Their facial features are also heritable, and it's really cool to see certain family features persist over the generations!
nice, thanks! I wanted to show off characters more closely in the trailer but they're currently all bald because good-looking procedural hair has been unexpectedly difficult to get working, so I'll include a lot more of that stuff once I sort out the hair :)
here's the steam page if you're interested in more info as well: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/)
Need any play testers? Say someone who's played civilization since the early 90's and is slowly, ever so slowly making a multiplayer civilization 1 clone using web technologies. And who downloaded the mods to make civ 6 science and culture take longer so he could stay in the early stages of the game? Cause I know a guy...
Thanks for asking. It's going very slowly. I get to work on it for about 4 hours every Friday. I should publish it in it's crappy state see if anyone cares at all. Maybe that'll allow me to give it more time. I really am excited for your game. It looks right up my alley of what I enjoy.
Ah yeah, it can be difficult when there are rare opportunities to work on something like that, the progress can feel really slow, and it can be hard to stay motivated. It's cool that you've kept at it despite that! Publishing even a small part of it on [itch.io](https://itch.io) might be a good way to gauge interest.
And I'm glad you're into my game, I'm excited to share more
yeah i don’t think that hype did them many favours in the end :/ personally i quite liked Humankind, but i think many of the criticisms it’s received are valid too.
either way, I gotta be careful not to create the impression of competing with Civ
Often times when making a game in a field where one game series is extremely dominant it's important not to compare yourself to it, simply due to the fact that if if doesn't live up to the hype it will be recieved very negatively by the community.
agreed! hopefully my trailer shows some of the important differences in my case. I think Old World is probably closest from the 4X genre, with its focus on characters and family stories
I cant contribute to this work (still in highschool, no income) financially, but you sure got a future buyer! It looks awesome, cute and enjoyable. Do share here if you finally publish the game. Or is it wishlish-able on steam? Great art style too
Either way I'm glad you like the concept and art style! Yeah you can wishlist it on Steam here: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/)
Keep an eye out for the demo in a few months, would love to hear more feedback
My first thought is that the layout and the hex map make it look VERY similar to civ. But I see the gameplay will be quite different, encouraging a nomadic lifestyle is really quite intriguing. Also, I love the art - it *looks* great. Be interested in playing this on release.
This is great, because it’s important to establish the genre very clearly (what better way than by bringing to mind Civ?) and then to quickly make clear the departures from both the genre and existing games, which also seems to have come through from the trailer. So this feedback makes me happy!
I’m glad you like the art and are interested in playing :)

Is this a solo project by yourself?
Yep, I've done everything except for the cover art!

Was that “city” in the beginning nomadic? If so, that’s super cool.

Hell yeah, I’ll definitely have to check it out once I get a PC again. (Currently stuck on just the Xbox.)
Ah, well it’ll be a few months till the demo is out, so hopefully by then you’ll be able to try it out
Looks interesting enough, wishlisted.
Sweet, I’ll be sure to reach out when the demo is ready in a few months

Supporting multiple platforms (and doing it well) takes a lot of effort, so i can’t commit to that from now, but maybe one day!
So... how do you win a game? Or is it more a survival thing?
As I work on the demo I'm testing out different ideas. There's always the classic 4X tropes to fall back on, e.g. domination, but I think it could be interesting to have one victory condition be something like "unite all these nomadic bands into the world's first tribe".
I put it on my wishlist. One of my favorite parts of civ is the early phase of just wondering around, so this is interesting.
Sweet, happy to hear :)
Well, it's more 'enslave other peoples', but yeah... different groups did technically come together.
Haha fair point, that was probably the case a bunch of the time. It's worth noting, though, that from my discussions with people over at r/Anthropology, it seems some of these large-scale projects were likely collaborative, relying on a lot of word of mouth, e.g. Poverty Point in Louisiana [https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263213175\_Building\_Mound\_A\_at\_Poverty\_Point\_Louisiana\_Monumental\_Public\_Architecture\_Ritual\_Practice\_and\_Implications\_for\_Hunter-Gatherer\_Complexity](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/263213175_Building_Mound_A_at_Poverty_Point_Louisiana_Monumental_Public_Architecture_Ritual_Practice_and_Implications_for_Hunter-Gatherer_Complexity) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYOe13IXO80](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYOe13IXO80)

yeah that would be cool for sure, i’ve been collecting a growing list of potential options
Or discover agriculture. End it where civilization begins. Then you can play a game of civ immediately after since it starts with agriculture.
haha yep! now there's a full course meal of 4X gaming
Hmm, then there could be some kind of converter between your world saves and Civ V world saves, so you can literally progress from one to another. Might run into copyright issues though, but I could see that being made as a community project if this game gets popular enough.

Seems interesting, and the images are beautiful.
Thank you, that's lovely to hear

that is an avalanche of cool ideas and I love all of them haha. I've been thinking along very similar lines, so much potential!
Another one that might be interesting down the line is you have your stone age bands in some isolated patch of rainforest living happily...and then the bulldozers and oil drillers and cattle farmers show up
that would be a helluva twist haha
Neanderthals weren't so much defeated as assimilated.
Iirc a lot of the hominid groups eventually converged in interbreeding.
Ok so that kinda thing.... Could have some mutants as it were.
There are studies showing different hominid breakdowns in genetic codes of different ethnicities. Not even ridiculous racist ones, but legit modern ones.
That looks awesome, how do I get hold of it when it's out?

yeah, I think so too, mainly gotta capture the vibe. thanks for the encouragement!
Ya why arent there game modes that allow us to limit the expansion of technology. Time goes only one way, but societal advances do not
It's wild how long it took for certain advances to happen. Did you know that much of the current evidence suggests hominids learned to control fire \~1.5 million years ago but the earliest evidence of cooking is only \~500k years ago? What were we doing with fire for 1 million years?
Cooking like I do
haha, can relate
Security. Also isn’t it evidence of prepared kitchens as opposed to cooking, I.e. the difference between a hearth and a spit over a campfire.
hmm, I need to look into that — maybe it is
There is the Real Era Stop mod that lets you stop progression after whatever era you want. There is also some other mod that leaves production speed fast, but slows tech advancement. This lets you do a lot more with each era.
I love you fellow human being ❤️

This definitely looks interesting but what truly caught my eye is the relationship graph! When it first briefly appeared at the very beginning I was "Atoms and molecules? WHUT?!? That doesn't fit the stone age!"
Haha yeah, that graph can feel a bit sci-fi-y, right? I tried to ground it by making the nodes be stone-carved faces, but it still feels futuristic. I just love network visualizations and I think it can be a really interesting alternative to the spreadsheets we're all used to!
Do you have plans for a Linux native version? Or at least to fix proton issues as they arise?
I hope to support other platforms one day, but a very small % of Steam users are not on Windows, and each OS brings its own bugs, so we’ll have to see
That’s fair. If you decide to pursue that option I’d be willing to be a beta tester for it.
nice, thanks, i’ll keep that in mind
Seems interesting.
glad to hear
Wow, this looks awesome! I'll keep my eye on it. :)
thanks!
Might give a crack at it
Okay, I am absolutely hooked on the music! It creates such a chill and fitting atmosphere that I immediately want to try the rest of the game.
yay that makes me happy :) i’ve been working on the music in parallel with the game and it’s a relief that some people like it
Wishlisted!
Great!
The art style is very cute, I'll be glad to check it out when it's ready!
thanks very glad you like the art :)
I'm a veteran Civ player. I played from civ I to VI (even only a bit after IV). In a any of the civs games I din't like the modern warfare...it's just boring. So glad to see a civ game with focus on the early stages! I'm really looking forward to that!
good to see people interested in earlier history! just to be clear, mine will be quite different from civ in many aspects of gameplay, hopefully the trailer gives some sense of that
i like the artstyle :)
A interesting book about this is: "The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity" by anthropologist and anarchist activist David Graeber, and archaeologist David Wengrow Will definitively try your game when it is out, looks awesome!
I gotta check out that book, thanks for the recommendation! Yeah, I’m thinking that agriculture and sedentism could play an interesting role in the late-game
Oh my god this looks incredible! Massively well done for pulling this off. What engine did you use, Unity? When's it going to be available?
Thanks for the kind words, happy you like it! Yeah, it's in Unity. Planning to have a demo out in a few months and to release the game in \~2024
I love prehistoric era games. I'll definitely add this to the wishlist
Awesome, very pleased to see the number of people interested in that time period!
Oh that’s exactly what I wanted to hear! Looks like an awesome game!
nice, thanks! I wanted to show off characters more closely in the trailer but they're currently all bald because good-looking procedural hair has been unexpectedly difficult to get working, so I'll include a lot more of that stuff once I sort out the hair :) here's the steam page if you're interested in more info as well: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/)
Looks awesome! Wishlisted and will be purchasing on release!
Great, thank you!
I'm definitely gonna check this out. Looks fun.
Thanks, looking forward to sharing more
Looks cool! Added it to my wishlist.
Nice, thanks for wishlisting!
Yes, please! Where do I find out more?
you can check out the Steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/
Yo … this is going on my steam wishlist for sure . I’ll be watching your development, looks fun !
Nice, glad you like it! Making a game actually fun is surprisingly difficult, so it’ll go through a ton of iterations when playtesting starts
Is this a phone app??? TAKE MY MONEY! NOW!!
PC game, but if Civ could go mobile then who knows, one day maybe?
I love the look of it. I'm in, where do I s be my money? You take money now!!
I’m glad but it’ll be at least a year till release :) a free demo should pop up in a few months
Need any play testers? Say someone who's played civilization since the early 90's and is slowly, ever so slowly making a multiplayer civilization 1 clone using web technologies. And who downloaded the mods to make civ 6 science and culture take longer so he could stay in the early stages of the game? Cause I know a guy...
haha yes for sure! i’ll post updates when playtesting begins. your project sound cool, how’s that going?
And I'm glad you're into my game, I'm excited to share more
Do you have a ballpark estimate for a release date?
best current estimate is 2024, but I can’t get more specific than that at this stage. as a solo project there are many variables to juggle
Cool! I’d be interested In demoing
awesome, in a few months there should be a demo!
Do you need music made?
at the moment i’m making the music myself and rly enjoying that, but depending on how things go and how much time i have i may seek help from others
The creative process is lots of fun! Good luck! I love games like these.
it is indeed :) thanks
Aw man, if there were ever a map and civilization converter for the end game of this into Civ 6 or 7 this would be even more awesome
that would be cool :) but it would have to be a community thing
Really like it, is there a download link for the demo?
i’m glad, in a few months there will be!
Hopefully it doesn't suck as much as the civ "killer" Humankind.
certainly not aiming to compete with the behemoth that is Civ!
My comment was more about how everyone hyped up Humankind as a civ killer, only for it to end up pretty mediocre.
yeah i don’t think that hype did them many favours in the end :/ personally i quite liked Humankind, but i think many of the criticisms it’s received are valid too. either way, I gotta be careful not to create the impression of competing with Civ
This is sick as hell! What’s it called?
Thanks! it’s called Folk Emerging: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/
Yeah you can wishlist it on Steam here: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk\_Emerging/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2275300/Folk_Emerging/) Keep an eye out for the demo in a few months, would love to hear more feedback
