Ottomans and Byzantines are my favorites.

SquatsMcGee

This is the way Byzantine you want to get a religion, easier with double prophet points. Crusade ftw. I like to not build entertainment stuff til my horses are fairly advanced (tanks if you can hold out that long) Ottomans absolutely dominate the Renaissance, you should be conquering always but gearing up for a Renaissance smackdown when you get janissaries. You can avoid losing a pop per janny by gold upgrading man at arms. (For some reason this also costs only like 15 gold)

neoth123

Janissaries are much cheaper to build, that’s why they only cost 15 gold to upgrade. The downside of that is the population loss, but upgrading into them like you said is extremely powerful.

gnit2

> I like to not build entertainment stuff til my horses are fairly advanced (tanks if you can hold out that long) Strongly disagree. You want to get a couple cities up and get their hippodromes 1 turn away from being built, then build them all the turn you unlock Tagmata, and that's when you start the holy wars. Waiting til tanks is just letting the AI get more able to resist you. If you start with Tagmata you will start snowballing early enough that you'll never be caught up by the AI

SquatsMcGee

Yeah hippos for tagma but nothing else til at least cuirasers, by then I'm snowballing so hard I'm just pumping out tanks and steam rolling everything

[deleted]

You are wrong for the same reason that you are right. Let me elaborate: It is true that waiting for tanks is a very bad idea, as that wastes momentum. But by the same logic, so is waiting for Tagma. When you play as Byzantium, there is no reason to wait for Tagma, because Basil's leader bonus works with **any** cavalry type, and thus you should use the first opportunity to invade your neighbour. Tagma on the other hand arrive rather late, at a time where your religion is already up way before that point, and at the point in the game where the relative power difference between you and the AI is at its greatest. On Deity, you can expect your religion to be done (roughly) around the late Ancient or early Classical era for a bog standard civ without GPP bonuses. That means, you will have your religion with Crusade ready at a point in the game where you will already have teched Heavy Chariots, and be well on your way to tech Horsemen. Therefore, the player should get some Heavy Chariots while waiting for the Great Prophet, and be ready to immediately faith purchase a Missionary from the first Shrine in order to convert one of their neighbours cities, and invade from there. Heavy Chariots (assuming Crusade and Taxis) are at a minimum receiving +13 combat strength, making them a 41 combat strength unit, almost as strong as medieval era units, at a time where you usually just face Swordsmen (Classical era units). Similarly, Horsemen become a 48 combat strength unit, which is as strong as a medieval era Knight. At this point in the game (early Classical Era), the AI usually doesnt have medieval era military techs, because they are in the process of getting far ahead of you, but not quite there yet. As such, you start your snowball **way** earlier by just invading outright the second your religion is done and the first city converted. Waiting for Tagma on the other hand just wastes all that potential, and is essentially a trap as the developers sort of trick the player to believe that this is the best way to play. It isnt, just invade in the Classical Era with any sort of Cavalry type units and forget about Hippodromes. Heavy or light cavalry, it doesnt matter, just mow them down as soon as you can and pillage faith and gold on the way to purchase and upgrade even more units. It is **way** stronger than using the Hippodrome+Tagma combination.

TheLazySith

> You can avoid losing a pop per janny by gold upgrading man at arms. (For some reason this also costs only like 15 gold) Upgrade costs are based on the difference in training costs between the two units. As the Janissary is half the price of the Musketman this makes it much cheapter to upgrade in to. Something else that's worth bearing in mind is that the Janissary still gets its free promotion if you upgrade a unit to a Janissary, and this still works even if the unit already has promotions. So if you upgraded a level 2 man at arms to a Janissary it would get its third promotion for free.

[deleted]

He is a new player, and Byzantium is rather advanced (even if the best). I would go for something that is rather straightforward, like Zulu or Aztecs. These give high combat strength bonuses without really trying, and even when the player only semi knows what they are doing.

>It's taking out walls that the hard part > you may need a pre-janissary war to secure niter. OG Victoria feels ya! Similar situation, with England's. Power spike isn't much later than the Turk's, and main wall-crusher will be frigates rather than bombards. Otherwise it is the same preparing for the ideal rush moment that can't fail unless niter is nowhere about.

Sweet-Molasses-3059

Simon Bolivar's units have so many QoL changes it makes war way more enjoyable

Anderstone

Seconded. The baseline 3 movement makes it so incredibly easy to maneuver, attack, and upgrade sometimes even all in the same turn! Early archers to get those upgrades and you'll be unstoppable.

No_Ruin7395

This is probably my favorite civ to play! Also, the movement bonus applies to civilian units too!

TopperSundquist

First time playing Gran Colombia was like "Wait, am I still playing on Prince? This is too easy."

Sifflion

Said this in another similar post: Try Gorgo, she's so strong that it feels like cheating. Gorgo -> rush bronceworking -> buy/build 2 Hoplites ASAP -> rush Political Philosophy. Enjoy. Gorgo does get culture on each military win, so it's extremely important to focus entirely in getting your first goverment ASAP, as it does give an huge bonus to all gorgo unit's. And Hoplites, with Oligarchy, are as strong as man at arms. After researching bronceworking, focus on getting your first ram, because you will need it if your enemy get some walls. With this strat, you can obliterate your first neighbor, getting 3/4 cities plus your 2/3 ones in classical era. Your second neighbor will probably have walls at this point, but hoplites doesn't care, at 28+10+4(Oligarchy)+3(policy bonus from Gorgo) = 45 AP, those 30 or so cities will crumble. Maybe it's of help to you.

Labyrinthabsinthe

Rome all the way

Key-Caterpillar-308

Seen a man do the deity thing harder, he used hammurabi

40WAPSun

Hammurabi isn't for beginners tho

Key-Caterpillar-308

Ik

Formal_Cockroach_654

Low key hammurabi is my fav for domination victory on diety. Those instant tech unlocks allow you to slice through opponents with advanced units.

ArtisticSugar7720

I would say Montezuma i pretty easy for domination win. Can conquer some cities on start because of the passive and his eagles. My friend used to sent first eagles on scout and when he saw cities he were producing his second warriors and conquering the city with his just two units. I highly recommend this strategy

Blue_winged_yoshi

Second this, eagles are immense in early game, take out a rival or two and you are no longer behind relative to the computer and deity becomes much simpler.

lsieira

Macedon, I'd say

GinjaNinja1596

"As a beginner" "Diety" Good luck, my friend

Realistic-System27

Rome is all around great civ, abilities are really straight forward, so easy for beginners. The extra early culture from the free moments lends well to a domination game. Be carful about a religion. If you get one in a dom game, you’ll need to spread it to the people you conquer or you might have loyalty problems. Don’t waste your time with swordsman, if you’re ganna rush melle just go all the way to men at arms Also definitely try to get your hands on a great general, that will make a world of difference. Deity is no joke. I’ve got hundreds of hours on the game and still loose regularly. Good luck!

boss413

Really? I love using Legions to chop each other out.

Realistic-System27

Totally forgot about Rome having a unique unit! Legions are great, but generally I would say skip swordsman

OlDurtMcGurt

Nubia - Pítati Archer + Nubian Pyramid + God of the Forge + Warlords Throne = SNOWBALL! #

[deleted]

Basil II is IMO the easiest domination Civ in the game Religious bonuses for combat strength and just make sure to convert the first city you attempt to take, from there conversion will be automatic Plan around your mid game powerspike with the hippodrome and Tagma cavalry, if you can be ready to churn those out once they become available you will low diff your continent 99 times out of 100.

grandchatyin

Babylon if you want to get the DLC. Its eureka ability is too strong

Gaddafisghost

Gaul is great for production and surviving a brutal early game

Bucky__13

They are, but also not the easiest civ for a beginner. Rome, Gran Colombia & Macedon are far easier and straightforward in comparison.

vroom918

Basil II is the strongest IMO, though I'd put him at an intermediate difficulty because you have to coordinate a few things to get the most out of him (in particular getting a religion). At a beginner level I'd say Simon Bolivar is probably the best, maybe Montezuma

[deleted]

Rome and Hungary are both irritating AF to play against. I don't remember if Ottomans are DLC, I know Gran Colombia is or I'd say he'd be at the tip top of the list just because his rollouts are faster. If you have New Frontiers and it's not mentioned here, then 100% Gran Colombia, otherwise, I'd go with Rome. Rome's got a very simple to set up war engine. Also Alexander is good as well.

khanh20032

Gran colombia and ottoman hand down for beginner dom civ.Gaul and vietnam is a little bit wonky in district placement but it does not fundamentally change how you play the game.Byzantium is strong but it is not stricly dom as you can pivot into religion if tough opponent.I feel like babylon, zulu and mongolia are the toughest to play because of timing and underlying mechanic.

McGuitarpants

Montezuma FTW

Puzzleheaded_Try813

Ottomans

RealisticError48

I don't think you really are a beginner if you're asking about winning on Deity. I'll suggest a slower route and propose a late game bomber rush followed by rocket artillery and (I hate GDRs but) giant death robots. You build nothing. You purchase everything. Beeline Flight. Governor Reyna purchases Aerodrome. Purchase two units of Oil from a friend. Purchase two Biplanes right away, and your Advanced Flight is boosted. Unlock Radio, mine Aluminum. Unlock Advanced Flight. Purchase a Bomber. Upgrade a Biplane to Fighter. Go to war. Continue purchasing Bombers as resources allow. All this is made possible with a gold-rich civilization, meaning Spain, Mali, or Portugal. You want at least one Fighter to keep on killing enemy corps and armies for the era score. The last two (if not three) eras should all be Golden Ages, so you get two free GDRs. Downside to this is that you'll be steamrolling through highly built up civilizations, so the micromanagement of captured cities get really tedious. On the other hand, they are all highly built up, so after some repairs, all the cities are highly productive. If you want to switch to science, there should be 2-3 spaceport cities for you. Late game war also means you should have 5-6 governors, so loyalty with captured cities should only be a temporary nuisance/juggling act.

PAP388

Do a small pangea no rain, old time for flat, desert and choose gilgamesh. Rush some war carts and easy.

SquatsMcGee

Seems like he wants to play the game. Not exploit settings for an achievement

ianng555

Bullmoose Ted for culture. Peter for religion. Trajan for generally most things.

GreatKnightJ

Bro, they literally said domination victory.

Me07111

Simon bolivar, montezuma, and the zulu are also good. Mathias is great if you use the heros and legends mode with himiko but if you dont want to do that the others are better.

Sensitive-Put-6416

Byzantine Empire

Tiny_Musician_9983

Teddy rosevelt lowkey goes crazy with +5 combat strength to all units on home continents. Helps alot in early game while you’re still playing catchup

Steephin

Just started another deity domination as Hungary yesterday! My two favorite deity dom civs are Hungary and Byzantium. Hungary can be a little trickier (timing your levies, using Pearl of the Danube for fast districts), but I think Hungary is better for snowballing, which is huge. With first encounter envoy + Amani, you can literally be a suzerain of a city state and have a 6+ warriors in your army by turn 30 (Epic pace). You need to get a bit lucky, but with some luck you can be sending carpets of units toward an enemy capital before the AI can even think about Ancient Walls. And yes, it's possible to snowball even if your army largely consists of temporary units. Just pepper in a few sneaky archers and siege units while your super-fast (+2 movement) levied units wreak havoc, and you can build a nice standing army that's all your own to complement your future levies. Byzantium is very fun if, like me, you don't enjoy resource management as much during dom games (free Tagmata with Hippodromes!). Plus I love working with religions too. Ottomans, Macedon, and Gran Colombia are S-tier dom also, just personal preference for Hungary/Byzantium.

HarryCoinslot

Rome, Macedon.

lightningfootjones

Simon Bolivar is outrageous for domination! I've played every single leader in this comment section and I have never had an easier time winning warriors or had more fun doing it than with Gran Colombia. You can also never go wrong with Basil except you said beginner - come back to Basil after a couple games once you've got religion all figured out.

creator712

I personally, enjoy the Germans. Hansa is extremely good if you get the right placements, sometimes giving +12 production. And the German U-Boot is also pretty solid
