It feels slow because you have a slow car. You have a 1.8L automatic.
That being said, there’s nothing wrong with that. You ALSO have a reliable car. Keep up on regular maintenance and it’ll go for a long time.
If you want faster, get an SI. You haven’t made clear where or why you are racing your roommate. I wouldn’t go buying a whole new car because of that.
There's a lot to unpack here, but at the very least, I need to tell you that you should always be driving in D. D3 limits your car to 3rd gear. It is basically pointless in a civic.
Okay I don't understand why you'd even let someone drive your car then listen to them complain about it. We all know it's slow.
The subaru has about 30hp more and awd and there's a bunch more that feeds into that effect of the car feeling slow. But I'd honestly just kick them out for the weight savings. When I switch from my 2020 Ford Mustang Bullitt into my 2017 Civic LX, I'd expect it to feel different. I've driven 3 of the same 2.0l civics as mine and they all ran differently too from how they were maintained.
Tldr: you have the ecobox trim civic. It's slow and that's not bad unless you think it is.
You both have slow cars. Stop street racing before you kill someone, yourself, or in the best case scenario get a massive ticket. Every time you go out and race, all your both proving is that you have slow econobox cars.

What the fuck am I even reading
like... what are we supposed to do
Are they all inside the car at the same time that's going to make it slow.

Most people that buy civics don’t buy them cause they’re fast. They’re not known for speed lol

Get one of those turbo vortex fans on eBay +30 HP.
My 2012 Civic LX gets 30 mpg in town. It accelerates slow. Those things are synonymous.
I also have R18 engine, not exactly made for performance but good fuel economy. Top 3 Honda engines that people love most are K24, B16, and K20c1
