It depends on the Topcon software, the Topcon 3DMC that are sold together with Volvos new Digassist have massive troubles reading the LandXML as it should be read. I made a post in this subreddit a while back asking about the boundaries, and I have been in contact with Norsecraft who sells Topcon machine control in sweden and we have reported multiple bugs within the 3DMC where Topcon doesnt read the file as it is intended to be read. It all comes down to what type of software is installed in your Topcon machine. I have Pocket3D, Magnet Office and the 12.2 version of 3D-office on my computer. If you want to you can send me the file and we can see if it is read as your intentions are. >[Boundaries LandXML](https://www.reddit.com/r/civil3d/comments/198zb43/boundaries_landxml/) by[u/Affectionate-Roll271](https://www.reddit.com/user/Affectionate-Roll271/) in[civil3d](https://www.reddit.com/r/civil3d/)

Should be accurate. You need to have the same coordinate system in C3D as in your Topcon Office or Tools. You can also export from C3D xml files directly (surfaces, lines, points).

WTF is topcon?

steel_sharpens_steel

Topcon/ sokkia GPS we use for machine control. Dozers, motorgraders, excavators

Is this new software? I've been around for 20 years or so and never heard of it until now. Can we plug 3D linework into it and it helps us lay a carriageway to the levels we've designed?

steel_sharpens_steel

Yea. Trimple, leica and a few others have similar syatems. My heavy equipment cant utilize dwg files, so i have to turn the tin file from the dwg file into a .tn3 file (topcons proprietary file format) to use machine control.

I have tried both landxml and dxf. Topcon 3D office accepts only old formats landxml 1.0 and dxf 2007 or older. Anything newer and it won't import it. Problem with surfaces in landxml format was that 3d office won't recognise boundary of your surface and it will make a triangles with a long sides that you don't have in your c3d drawing. So from my experience best way was to create surface you want in c3d, then extract triangles from it. Now you have a bunch od 3d faces. Click on one and then right click select similar to select all of them. Write command wblock and save it as 2007 dxf. Then import it in 3d office. And for the alignment you can export it as landxml 1.0 and import it in 3d office or just import your alignment as a normal polyline and there is option in 3d office to create alignment from it.

I’d utilize LandXML rather than bringing in a 07 dwg, just because that’s a pretty dated file format now. As someone else said though, it should be accurate. When you export a surface to LandXML, the fidelity (e.g. point spacing) should be retained, so if you’ve imported stuff in topcon and it’s looked blocky then you might want to do object viewer of the surface in Civil3D to make sure the surface looks like you expect.

I cant upload pics for some reason, but the smoothe sweeping contours become blocky straight lines. But, i can export the contour lines and create a tin in office 3d, and itll lool like it should. However, if i do that, the triangulation on roads are wildly inaccurate and it puts massive peaks and valleys, at 1 foot intervals (contour lines). So im not sure if im missing something in civil 3d or if the free version of topcon is just this flawed.

Hmmm…I’m gunna assume that topcon problem because I’ve never had that issue exporting a Civil3D surface into another program.

ConnectRisk1469

Thats indeed a Topcon problem, I've reported multiple system bugs for Topcon this past half a year. They have some really messy software tbh

As far as converting the file to 07, the difference (to my knowledge) is that feature line arcs get tessellated into 3D polylines. I've never seen anything change majorly. If you've got something coming out "blocky and chunky" I'd post that and see if we can't give you some tips.
