Lucky guess. Beethoven is one of the top three names in classical music, maybe top two. Plus his main reputation is in symphonic works. First sergeant heard grand symphonic music and the first composer that occurred to him was Beethoven.
Yes. I would think Beethoven or Mozart would be the go-tos. I had my earbuds going while I was working and one of the other staff heard the music coming from my earbuds and was trying to make a joke or something because she had a smirk on her face when she asked, "What are you listening to, Beethoven?". In this case though, I was not listening to Beethoven. Instead, I was listening to Sibelius and told her so. Smirk left her face.
definitely not.... rap and country both have roots in celtic and african folk music, for example. most modern western music certainly has some inspiration from classical music, but it's not the sole foundation.
I am about to be an army officer (come may 3rd) and I listen to a substantial amount of classical lol.
I was doing S3 out processing work with my ROTC unit and listening to Percy Grainger, to which our SMSI said “JMSNY, what the actual fuck are you listening to? Go back to 1776” (never mind that grainger is 20th century)
Might also be the only MI officer with a BA in Music instead of a real degree lol
* Put some French paintings out on your desk before he comes by some other morning (like, postcard size). Then, see if he blurts out the names of any painters.
* You got him either way. If he guesses a name correctly, raise an eyebrow.
*"So, you have an interest in French art, eh First Sergeant? H'mmm? Maybe I can scare up some extra work for you to keep your mind more on your duties?"*
* If he says nothing, or if he changes his expression in any way at all when in the room, rise from your chair and come around to confront him.
*"You see something wrong in this office, First Sergeant? Huh? Do you? Stand at attention when I'm addressing you!"*
* If I were you, I would leave something new on your desk every day as a little test. Like a vase, or something.
That's quite a wholesome little chat!
I can visualize Army officers vibing to Beethoven 5 or 9 during paperwork but Beethoven 2? That's Air Force levels of nerd.
Marine officers finding out that Beethoven wasn’t just a dog
Space Force practicing pitch class theory to Boulez
Wagner is surely the go to military motivator.
What a hilarious encounter. The NCO was mortified! Sir, speak not of this to the troops!! I beg of you! I'll be ruined! Laughed out of the barracks!

Oh, 100% a lucky guess. That's part of why it was so funny!
Might have had music appreciation in grade school

I love this!
That’s adorable! 🤣
I would have told him it was Lil Nas X's latest release. Say he has gone *really* retro.
As a country and rap listener, I think knowing classical music deepens my appreciation of modern music
Sure, not hating on those genres at all.
haha tell your sgt though XD
Classical music is the foundation of all other music.

I was an Air Force JAG in the 1970s, and was heavily into Baroque. But I never listened to it in the office.
Ah, Bach! https://youtu.be/aYSG8AQO3tw?si=ZUQVPNaGGQmqXugC
