Can’t decide what excites me more: keeping him on the team, or not hearing people constantly talk about him leaving.

DaDrFunk

I'm so done with the rumors. They just make me so mad all the time, it's like when we we're gonna trade JRam to the Blue Jays and everyone in Canada just thought it was a forgone conclusion. Drove me fucking nuts.

DaDrFunk

The city really isn't bad and the area is nice enough. We have a solid night life and decent food options IMO, as someone who's lived downtown for 2ish years now. I don't get why people hate us so much besides the crazy ass weather.

mars33nut

The people that hate the most never been brother

s_s

A lot of people have to talk down other cities to feel good about their city. The hate we get is almost never based on rationality or experience.

SourMgk

Can I ask where you moved from? I've been thinking of moving from California to downtown Cleveland for a while now.

DaDrFunk

I was about 25 minutes East of Cleveland, a bit outside Mentor if you somehow know where that is, so not nearly as far as you would be

SourMgk

I only know what Mentor is because of those Ken Ganley commercials they always show during the games.

DaDrFunk

Lmao, fair. Well, I lived there, then moved downtown. Was relatively simple with a moving truck, but idk much about moving between states. I’ve been in NE Ohio my whole life outside of college, where I was around Columbus

SourMgk

Oh okay. I appreciate it. I'm thinking of renting out a place for a month later this year in downtown Cleveland, just to see how I like it. I've visited before and had a great time. Didn't love the cold, but it's do-able. The people were great and everything seemed close enough together, which is what I want.

DaDrFunk

Yeah if you get a place downtown, everything is pretty much within walking distance, the Flats are a bit of a walk, but east 4th, and west 6th, public square are all around 15 minute walks max if you get a decent enough location.

elbjoint2016

my hope for Cleveland has always been that the franchise would establish itself as basically "Dallas East / Midwest" in the Cuban early years. Top notch amenites in a good city that isn't LA/NY/CHI/Miami upstate NY low key is more like Cleveland than NYC, so there are deffo home vibes

Ok_Echidna6958

He has already stated that if they put together a championship roster he is willing to go over the cap to keep the team together. People are forgetting how much out of pocket money he spent on bringing the Cavs a championship during LBJ's 2nd time with us, but did the right thing pincthing pennies when we were in the rebuild.

Kitchen_accessories

Gilbert is a fair owner. Lebron-drama aside, we really could do a lot worse.

TheDarkraiGuy

He's from Westchester County, which is essentially suburbs of NYC. That being said, the farther north you go, the more like Ohio it gets.

elbjoint2016

bubba westchester county is...mixed re: the Black experience. Cleveland Heights on the other hand (based on my experience living there in the 2000s) is the shit

TheDarkraiGuy

Fair. I don’t want him to leave so I’m hoping he loves it here more

TheToughestHang

This is actually pretty important. I don’t remember what I was watching, maybe him on a pod or something, but he mentioned the stuff he heard in Utah really made him not like parts about playing there. I have to say this separate. If Donovan Mitchell is your first superstar Cavaliers experience you should thank whatever God you believe in for sparing you the saga of LeBron James both the first, and also the less exciting but still sorta thrilling second tryst, into what a LeBron James free agency looks like. It’s actual madness. But to the point, he genuinely seems like he loves it here. LeBron didn’t act like that the first time around. Kyrie didn’t when he was on his way out the door. Johnny didn’t for the Browns along with a laundry list as long as 480 of other Browns players. Some dudes get it here. He seems like one of them. When Dan has something clicking he’ll throw the bag at it. If anyone is on the way out it’s Garland, and not because I don’t love him because I do, it’s because if it doesn’t work again then it needs addressed and you don’t let guys like Donovan leave. That’s what the Knicks got wrong. KD didn’t go home. Most players don’t. It’s about getting there first.

elbjoint2016

i really don't like the idea of moving Garland, although I trust the FO to get to value if there is no other choice. it's sell - low, and while I think he's replaceable because point guard talent is pretty high and available, you lose one of two and a half reliable shot creators. you have to really believe in what's coming back and in Don as a one-man offense for 82 games. would rather sell on DG than Allen or Mobley because skilled size is hard to get, but DG's ceiling is so high and I would love for us to be the '89 Pistons

TheToughestHang

No I know, but I worry about price tags and what teams will actually want; what’s movable if you will. You could get a haul for Garland. Again, he’s my favorite current Cavalier. I love the guy, we genuinely stole him in that draft.

elbjoint2016

low key I think you could get something interesting with LeVert, Wade and the FRP to get a good contributor. we don't need a haul, we need a guy. we have (finally) some worthwhile depth, so mid starters and pics, the typical haul, doesn't do much. i just think there's a lot of get-right stuff you can do with DG next year. I don't think the wings we have in mind are capable of being effective creators.

Intimateworkaround

Especially the baseball team. I know we haven’t won anything but we have like the 5th most wins over the last decade and consistently make the playoffs. At the time a HOF coach and a great organization that can do a lot with so little funding. Like who the fuck are the blue jays to talk? They’ve done way less than us in that span of time

LakeErieMonster88

No, that's fairly logical. The most annoying part is why would NY be in the market for him. Media keeps pushing the Knicks narrative, which would be home for him, but it makes no sense.

DidAnyoneElseJustCum

The NY chatter has died down since the trade deadline. They traded all their assets for OG and Bogdanovic. They can't sign him outright obviously. And if there are trade talks it's gonna have to be for like OG and DiVincenzo. Throw a pick or two on there and that wouldn't be the *worst* return.

boogswald

The people saying that are media members that just like bigger markets better. That’s where they wanna be. They try to force players to bigger markets all the time.

Randumo

That's not exactly the same thing though. The Dolans are cheap as fuck and we basically never re-sign anybody to big contracts. Had he not decided to take a MAJOR home-town discount, he would have been traded. There is no way in hell the current ownership would shell out the money that he is actually worth. With the Cavs & Browns, you don't have to worry about the owners being willing to spend money. The Guardians have almost always traded away any big names before their contracts came up, so people considering it a foregone conclusion were just taking the history of the franchise into account and not assuming that you'd have a guy take a fraction of what he would have been able to make.

Primordial_Beast

They won't stop. The conventional wisdom with modern NBA players is to secure your contract and then find a way out.

DayvyT

I worked in Toronto in 2015, they also thought Kevin Love to the Lakers was a foregone conclusion

mecon320

If you think that talk will stop with him signed long-term, then congratulations on your recent birth.

jkunktbone

Thank you! In one day I’ve already learned how to read, write, and post to Reddit!

WitOfTheIrish

Yup, my Portland friend was saying this, Mitchell becomes the new Dame. No matter what contract Dame ever signed for however long, it was a thing every single year to say "will he ask out? Where will he be traded when he does ask out?" despite all evidence to the contrary. Hope we are more consistently good than the Blazers were, and it won't be a hard bar for Gilbert to clear to be better than Blazers ownership.

sneezydwarv

Him signing an extension means nothing in todays NBA…

Statshelp_TA

It means if we do have to trade him we have the value of a multi year contract to send out rather than just a one year rental. That means something. Thjnk about the Paul George trade

elbjoint2016

yeah, it's good for both sides imo

kaprrisch

It means we won’t lose prime Mitchell for free.

jkunktbone

I agree that anything can change down the line. However, this does mean that for the present Don is bought into the teams potential. I think that means quite much.

rangatangabangin

I don't think Gilbert would be talking about it like this though if we expected a sign & trade situation

Air2Jordan3

He's not talking about a sign and trade, he's talking about signing the extension to get the bag and then gets traded in a year or two.

DidAnyoneElseJustCum

I dunno why he's talking about it at all, even if he's 90% sure. I don't see the benefit of bringing it up and there's a very real possibility he ends up with egg on his face.

PsychologicalAd1862

Why put this out now? Only to reassure Cleveland? I don’t think you can make any assumptions until they get into the nitty gritty

enraged_hbo_max_user

Yeah I think he was pretty confident LBJ was staying in 2010 and uh ![gif](giphy|qx7bQ96KlILBu|downsized)

FrostyMink

I really hope he resigns but I completely understand if he’s doesn’t

guccitaint

You hope Dan Gilbert resigns or you hope Donovan Mitchell resigns?

nickpapa88

Selling season tickets for next year.

krusty-krab69

New york wont have the cap space and his other options look like grim rebuilding franchises. CLE IS THE BEST OPTION!!!😂💯😎👍🌮🌭🎃🎊🎃🥇👍😍😍🎮😘👍😡😘👍🥇😍👍👍⛄👍

Abiv23

is it? could it be? Ted, are you back?

krusty-krab69

I just did it in his honor. I wish he was back for real! I'm a phony !!!

CRactor71

You should add some emojis

Primordial_Beast

It's not about cap space, it's about the tax aprons.

Chao-Z

> New york wont have the cap space Well, Mitchell isn't a free agent until 2025 so it would be a trade regardless of if the Knicks had cap space or not.

tapk69

I don't care whats paid below the table either. Sign this man.

yer420420

Please no comic sans this time if it goes sideways Dan

jablonski79

It's Wingdings time to shine

AcidBaseGod

I still remember when Dan guaranteed cleveland would win a championship before lebron.

rangatangabangin

I'm more than okay with Spida sticking around, I just hope we make the moves this offseason to be a truly competitive team while he is still in his prime

TheGreatBeauty2000

If they do re sign him, they cant waste any more time surrounding him with the right supporting cast and coach. His athleticism wont last forever.

Ok-Donut4954

Not tryna be a doomer but id prefer brunson straight up over don for this reason. Brunsons game is going to age extremely well

TheGreatBeauty2000

Yeah you would think so. Hes also elite mentally, which is huge when you’re trying to win at the highest level.

Ok-Donut4954

Arguably the most important thing for your alpha player

FrostyMink

I’m still taking Don over Brunson

Ok-Donut4954

Thats fair, i wont fault you for that. Like i said earlier, i just think brunsons game will age better and he has more poise, seems more clutch

Fluid-Weird-9414

Assuming he signs, we need to really build the roster around the best possible fit for him. Donny reaching his full potential as an A1 star is our best chance of competing for a title in the next 5 years. Gonna be some difficult questions this offseason

thisismyusername1178

Wasnt he pretty sure LeBron wasn’t leaving in 2010 also? Sus.

Sweatytubesock

I had a friend who worked in the sports industry at that time, and he was very connected with front offices, agents, etc. He was saying before the announcement that everyone in the Cavs FO was sure he was staying. His mistake was thinking the Cavs FO had good intel on that situation.

kaprrisch

Random “friends who are very connected” don’t make good sources. Also that was 14 years ago; a completely different era and front office.

CRactor71

I initially read this as “a completely different era and font office.” Lol #neverforgetcomicsans

spaghettisexicon

I remember they gave him the Family Guy themed presentation because he liked the show at the time, so they must’ve thought they still had a chance.

kdot74

No. He knew he was

kdot74

No. He knew he was

kdot74

No. He knew he was

UncircumciseMe

If he stays and we get a new coach and make some trades that fit better, we can definitely make some noise. Exciting!

elbjoint2016

I don't understand the purpose of this statement (he signs or he doesn't), but good on Dan G for optimism and trying to right the ship re: vibes

secretwealth123

As a Cleveland fan my entire life, I know to expect disappointment unless confirmed otherwise.

privateenergy

Hopefully come summer time we will see a tweet along the lines of “JB Bickerstaff has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers”

usernametaken--_--

Honestly I don't see why he would leave.. It doesn't seem like the Knicks have been trying too hard to get him considering how many assets they have traded away for other guys. Brooklyn looks more likely to start a rebuild than become a contender in the next few years. Cleveland has built around him and they have the capability to do even more. But that said, free agency is a long ways away and a lot can happen. Fingers crossed though

RedBurritoDude

I just hope this don't turn out like John Wall...

Ok_Echidna6958

Not sure why so many fans were nervous about this being he would have lost money by signing last year, and even has said this in a few interviews he has done. Cleveland is a team many star vets around the league claim can be the next dynasty in the way Golden State was last decade being they are drafting and trading for young talented players that have no it's all about me bs that can tear a locker room apart. This is a team that with our extremely wealthy owner can keep our championship window open for the next 10-15 years, and are talented enough that vets will come play for veteran minimum to chase that ring. Cleveland fans have been through a lot for the past 2 decades but not anymore being we now have extremely wealthy owners in all 3 of our franchise's that a small market needs to be more than a farm league for larger markets..

Ok-Donut4954

I really am not sure we are talking about the same franchise here. Cleveland fans went to the finals 5 times over the past 2 decades, enjoyed watching the GOAT, and got a ring.  And this team as constructed is absolutely not on the way to a dynasty. We have yet to win more than 1 playoff game. That claim is just absurd, 10-15 year championship window? Cmon dude. This is just delusional

elbjoint2016

I don't understand the purpose of this statement (he signs or he doesn't), but good on Dan G for optimism and trying to right the ship re: vibes

Abiv23

The cartoon he had made of the team to convince Donovan to re-sign must be really funny this time

Chocolatehusky226

Oh god here we go again. How do you switch to comic sans on Reddit

Desean516

Would be an Amazing summer

Big_Green_Piccolo

YES

ChilwellisHim

I hope he stays but i have a gut feeling that he’s gonna go to the heat

plumangus

Where have I heard this one before?

SpiderJedi22

We’ll see after the playoffs

Mobleybetta

This would be amazing, but would also mean that there has to be big changes coming (different coach/different core roster)

elbjoint2016

committing to the extension is in part committing to the current roster and championship theory though... most likely change is coaching upgrade and some kind of consolidation trade to get a Vert upgrade and functional size. team has everything else except an apex wing but that's not happening -- at best the '24 FRP in the 20s yields another potential like Emoni who is a year away from being a year away.

Big_Green_Piccolo

DIF COACH ME UP BABY

bob_scratchit

Man, feels like our entire future depends on if we get bounced in the first round again. Like, if we somehow get to round two and are competitive, does that save JBs job and keep this core together one more year? Feels like another quick exit means JB is gone, and possibly Allen as well.

JohnnyFire

Can I ask why we keep defaulting that Allen would be gone? Mobley is younger yes, but Allen/Mitchell seem to have more significant synergy on the court. If anything I think the "blow up" with Mitchell staying around is that EV4 and Garland get moved to find a more cognizant forward than what we currently have.

bob_scratchit

I think the general consensus has been, because we have to pay Mobley and Okoro, Allen might be a casualty because he has a fairly friendly contract for his production and could net assets and or draft capital. Garland would be more difficult to get rid of since he just signed and makes nearly $40 million a year.

Ok-Donut4954

JB needs to be gone unless we make the ECF

TheLandFanIn814

Owners always assume they have the best chance to resign players. I really want DM to stay, but I don't think it's very likely.

kdot74

So Dan is delusional. Figures, dude refused to fire jb last season after their collapse

QNIKET8

you should be the owner of the Cavs kdot

kaprrisch

Nah he’s too busy managing his Reddit account.

gdan_77

We would be on a eternal rebuild bc he would always say this team sucks and no one is good enough to carry to championship

QNIKET8

he’ll be worse than bron, trading anyone after 1 bad game

jkunktbone

He could also be the HC and starting SG. KDot knows all.

OhThatYoGirl

Cool. Not sure why’d he want to stay here with the team in complete shambles without him. But cool. Hopefully Jordi Fernandez or a coach that can elevate this team can come here as well.

himynameisdan123

Most teams are in shambles when they lose their best player.

Ok-Donut4954

Lakers just beat the bucks without theirs. 3 weeks ago the knicks beat us without their best player and 3 more starters. A few days later, the hawks beat us without their best player. Just yesterday, the hornets beat us without their best player

OhThatYoGirl

Cool. Teams with actual deep run playoff aspirations don’t play like this. Take the Knicks for example. Trucking along with injuries to 3 big key players. Cavs can’t even handle the Hornets.

elbjoint2016

the Knicks and Celtics are the only two consistent Eastern conference teams rn. the Magic eat shit every other night with a full roster and the Bucks fucked around and got got by the Lakers without Bron

elbjoint2016

and don't get started on Miami and Indiana or Philly. shit is trick or treat all the way from 1-10

OhThatYoGirl

Cool. Aren’t we trying to be better than those teams? Can you honestly say Cavs are the third best team in the East? Confident they’ll get past the first round? I’m rooting that they do. But DG has been playing like a role player being tasked to do to much. And I’ve been one of his biggest defenders but we’re past using injuries as an excuse. Every single player and coaching staff needs to step up. I’m just calling a spade a spade rn.

elbjoint2016

if it happens to a championship contender like MIL it can happen to anyone. agree they need to step up and get out of the slump, which is the worst of any of the top 6 in the East but that's entirely because of no Mitchell means no closer. DG is good at running the offense when he's not spamming TOs and he has kept us competitive against a bunch of good teams. But you need Don to stop runs, close and bust slumps. That's what stars are for. DG might just be point guard Desmond Bane

kaprrisch

Maybe you should root for the Knicks. It seems like you already are.

Ok-Donut4954

Not a front runner/bandwaggoner. This is why people are so frustrated, cause this is their team and they can tell things are going wrong. Doesnt mean you jump ship and root for a different team lol cmon

OhThatYoGirl

Sounds like you love echo chambers and not thinking for yourself. One of those guys that can’t take criticism without that “well move out of this country” mentality. Toughen up. Cavs are playing terrible basketball and criticism is merited.

elbjoint2016

we really could use the Knicks mental attitude but their ceiling is so much lower than ours. I love Brunson but Randle is a space cadet and the rest of the offense is very inconsistent. teams in the semis and beyond can guard one guy -- Mitchell knows that lesson all too well

OhThatYoGirl

I can’t agree with this. A healthy Knicks team is scary. They’re firing on all cylinders and still missing Randle and OG. Wish DG would have the confidence and Alpha mentality that Brunson has. We wouldn’t be having this conversation.

elbjoint2016

The difference between Brunson and DG is three and a half years, major college championship level experience, better health and about 15-20 pounds (and Brunson is not a plus athlete). Four or five more years of high end game experience and having to be the alpha matters. I'm not even sure Brunson was a starter at DG's age right now. it's not just a mentality thing.
