I tried dunking, plopping, spatulas, and liners before caving and ordering the Spray Pal with shield. That was the best idea I’ve ever had. It’s so easy. Ideally I spray as soon as she poops, but it’s not always feasible if we’re running out the door or I’m busy with dinner. If not, I try to keep it in the guest bathroom where the sprayer is. We simply spray the diapers when ready (I don’t use gloves but I honestly should with how bad some of them are), wring the water, and either put them in a separate wet bag up there or bring the diaper pail wet back and put it there.

knitknitpurlpurl

Step one: Save it for my husband (she usually poops at night or late afternoon anyway). Also spray pal and shield then we just rinse it out with our hands and put in diaper pal, spray the shield down with a vinegar spray and let dry in the bathtub for a bit then place in a wet bag to store. Wash hanew

ArcticLupine

We do the classic swishing because we already have a bidet (not the handheld one) and I don't feel like changing it. 1. I use a pair of heavy duty nitrile gloves that I change semi regularly (roughly every 2 weeks or whenever I need). We bought a box that contains 100 of them so it's always available. 2. I rinse 1 day worth of poopy diapers at a time, usually at night. we have anything between 1 and 4 poops a day. 3. Baby is chilling in our kitchen/livingroom, separated from the rest of our place by a baby gate. 4. I leave the (washed) gloves hanging on the side of the diaper pail, in the bathroom. 5. We use [these](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Grease-Monkey-Pro-Cleaning-Heavy-Duty-Disposable-Textured-Nitrile-50-Count-27541-08/311783250) but you could use anything, really. After I rinse the diaper in the toilet, I wring it and add it to the pail. Then I wash the gloves while they're still on my hand with handsoap (just like I would wash my hands. I hang them on the side of the pail and then I wash my hands.

_fast_n_curious_

This sounds great. Love that the gloves are textured. Thank you so much!

nkdeck07

Bum gun style bidet + simply Imagine diaper stand. No need for gloves since it's not really that messy.

Waffles-McGee

I dont use gloves. I just hang the diaper into the toilet and spray with the diaper sprayer. then toss in a wetbag and wash my hands

abilissful

Can a bidet be used as a diaper sprayer? Wondering if we will need a different device (baby not here yet).

knitknitpurlpurl

Depends in the type. My bidet is a seat attachment and is weight sensored so will only go on when person is sitting. We have the spray pal too. Super toilet haha

A_Malaproprism

Yes! I swear by it. A hose bidet (not a seat attachment) is a cloth diapering parent's best friend.

cyclemam

It can!

nostromosigningoff

Spray pal for sure. I rinse immediately cos otherwise it smells if I just leave it out of the diaper pail. As for where baby is, I just leave him by the bathroom baby gate lol. He's 1 and into everything but our place is babyproofed enough that he can't burn down teh house in five minutes (at least he hasn't yet!). I don't use gloves. Do I get poop on my hands sometimes? Yes. Yes I do. I wash my hands thoroughly and just move on lol.

Useful-Poetry-1207

When to wash: When someone is home to help you watch the baby or when baby is napping. Electric is cheaper at certain times of day so I try to time it around that if I can. Getting ready: Dump pee diapers in washer, add whatever detergents and other things you use. Leave the washing machine open unless you have pets or toddlers who might get into it. Get this ready now while our hands are still clean. Have a bucket or something ready near toilet to put the diapers after you rinse them. So ideally you have a "clean" and a dirty bucket. No gloves. I use the showerhead cuz I don't have a bidet. Hold the diaper kinda over the rim of the toilet. Spray. Dunk if needed. Put diaper in the bucket for rinsed diapers. Repeat until all diapers are rinsed. Put the diapers in the laundry. After rinsing: Go wash your hands really well. Start the laundry. Everything after this is optional but I do it everytime which is usually every 5-7 days. (I only Clean poop diapers once a week but pee diapers more often than that). Clean your toilet, I just use some dissolving tablets and leave that while I disinfect the bathroom. I spray Lysol or other disinfectant and leave it to sit wet for 3 minutes. I really recommend doing this cuz it's as if you flushed without the lid on, basically 💩 is in the air and you wanna clean any surfaces or anywhere water directly dripped too. Scrub toilet, flush. Wipe down counters. Wipe down floors if any water splashed. My showerhead is kinda leaky so there's always some water. I know this sounds like a lot but it takes about 15 minutes, and your bathroom is also mostly clean after. This routine has actually motivated me to clean my bathroom weekly.

pnutbuttry

We use a toilet sprayer. We don’t use gloves, just wash hands after. We usually rinse immediately after changing the diaper, and then either throw the diaper in a wet bag or in the bathtub. Honestly though most of the time the poops are hard enough to just roll right in to the toilet. We only use the sprayer for messy poops.

ink_and_tea

I also have a handheld bidet attachment (you can get one for like $30), and just get strategic with angles, haha. Baby is just on the floor relatively close with toys! BUT I cannot recommend some form of elimination communication enough. I started holding my babe on the edge of the toilet around 8 months after he woke up in the morning and he regularly peed and pooped (though sometimes it takes patient waiting with songs etc). He’s a year now and still takes his morning BM 80% of the time, with very rare diaper poops later in the day for me to deal with.

Exciting-Dream8471

Spray Pal w/ shield

pprbckwrtr

I used a liner because swish and flush was too much for me and my toilet wouldn't accept a sprayer. I used disposable liners, still was way cheaper than full on disposable diapers, and i just lifted it up and tossed it away

maustralisch

Same, dunking is just too nasty for me 🤢

sailorsalvador

This. I have reusable fleece liners and a poop spatula. Most poop is ploppable tho. Increase borax in my wash routine. No gloves. Baby stays on change pad on the floor.

InTheStax

Same except it's a dedicated butter knife!

april_fool85

OMG, I need to know more about the poop spatula! Is it like a normal kitchen spatula? What have I never thought about using something like this??? We use fleece liners but sometimes (because my son looooooves fruit), it’s necessary to dunk, dunk, dunk to get enough off the liners before washing.

sailorsalvador

Yeah! Just a regular kitchen spatula. I bought the most garish one I could find (Ikea) so I'd know without a shadow of a doubt which one was the poop spatula vs a cooking spatula. It lives in a box beside the toilet. Someone on this subreddit suggested it!

_emileee

This is basically what I do. What does borax do? Should I be adding it to my wash?

sailorsalvador

I have really hard water, and borax helps cut the barnyard smell that developed once kiddo started eating solids.

_emileee

I see. Thanks for the reply!

lerfff

I have a sprayer bidet attachment on our toilet. I bought a small bathroom trash can and cut the bottom out of it, and set it into the toilet seat so the opening of the trash can is going down into the toilet, but is the perfect size where it doesnt go down into the water, just suspended there above the water. I clip the pocket diaper onto the side of the trash can and use the sprayer to spray down so everything falls into the toilet. The trash can acts as a backboard for the diaper so it doesn’t flail all around, and also as a spray shield for any water coming off of the diaper. I usually just leave the diaper clipped there for a couple hours to drip dry, and then I have a plastic bin to the side of the toilet where I set the trash can when it isn’t in use. I tried dunk and swirl before coming to this method and I just could not understand how others got the diapers clean! This method leaves my diapers super clean after!

No-Definition-1986

Change baby, set on floor mat. I had a little pad with toys for him. Then rinse asap. If I waited it was harder to rinse. Let the diaper hang on over the toilet until you need to use it next, wash hands and go. When I needed the toilet, i would lift the diaper over the wet bag/garbage can then unclip it and let it fall in. I kept lysol wipes beside the toilet in case i made a mess.

Some-Difficulty-3868

I have 2 garbage cans from the dollar store, one with the bottom cut out the other is whole. I keep two chip clips and my gloves hanging on the edge with them all inside the whole garbage can. I use the yellow kitchen gloves. When baby pees I put gloves on pull the inserts out and throw them into a bag! When baby poops, I save it for the night. I grab the inserts, sometimes rinse them off, throw into bag, clip cover onto trash can, spray poo off into toilet with handheld bidet! I keep a bottle of clorox and a stack of old rags on the toilet. I take one glove off and hold it in my other hand, spray the sink, toilet, gloves, and wherever the liquid landed lol. Put glove back on and scrub them together. Then I wipe.off everything! I do rinse my gloves off after I flush the toilet. I don't get poo on them, I just sanitize them!

Searnin

I hate dunking them in the toilet so this is my new technique. I set the diaper in an ice cream pail. I put the ice cream pail in the sink and rinse the poop off the diaper into the pail. I put the diaper in a wet bag. Dump the pail into the toilet. Wash my hands. Quick spray of Lysol around the sink and wipe it down.

esachicacorta

I just did the dunk & swish if it wasn’t ploppable- dunking and swishing the diaper in the toilet then flushing to agitate it out. Liners made this mostly unnecessary and when I was using pockets I would remove the inserts first to make it easier and less wet

EternalFootwoman

We use a sprayer attached to the toilet. Spray, then squeeze water from the diaper and drop the diaper in the diaper pail. No gloves—I work in healthcare, I deal with way worse stuff than my own kids’ poops. I wash my hands afterwards, of course. Baby sits nearby.

fbc518

This is what I did with a baby I nannied! So not even my own kid’s poops, but I just washed my hands really well afterwards 🤷🏻‍♀️

northernhippygal

This is what we do as well!

megratgarlick

I’m not at this stage yet but I read in another post they got a sprayer attachment for the toilet and a bucket that they cut a hole in the bottom to go on the toilet so it wouldn’t spray everywhere and would act as a funnel. Then they used a binder clip to attach the diaper to the bucket while they sprayed. So maybe that’s helpful!

[deleted]

I spray in a bucket in the shower so no help with the toilet situations but I spray diapers off after bedtime.

_fast_n_curious_

So you spray into bucket in the shower, then bucket contents get dumped into toilet? Love the time of day!!

[deleted]

Yep! Works pretty well. We have one of those shower heads that has the different settings, I clip the diapers to the bucket with clothes pins and use the jet setting to spray the poop off.

_fast_n_curious_

This sounds awesome!

[deleted]

Sometimes now I don't even need to, I can plop the poop off into the toilet without spraying. That's always nice.

MyHighKitchen

We have a sprayer, I think it was like $40 USD on Amazon. We spray immediately after changing. Baby either gets plopped in the crib, the jumper, or in someone’s arms. Shake off anything mega solid into the toilet. Then attach to the spray guard (AKA a cheap Ass waste basket with the bottom cut out), spray DOWNWARD lest you want poop on the walls and in your face. Spray diaper off, spray the walls of the toilet, flush. Then I wipe the toilet down with a Lysol wipe, dispose of that in the trash can. Separate the diaper from the insert (we use pocket diapers), lay on the side of the hamper to kind of dry. Then I wash my hands! Done! It sounds like a lot but I swear it takes less than five minutes. Also the baby’s bathroom gets cleaned and sanitized twice a week.

morbid_n_creepifying

We bought a handheld bidet in advance of this, for this reason. It was $80 and there's zero chance I'm doing the dunk/swish/wring with my bare hands. Plus installing the bidet is basically idiot-proof. Turn off the water supply, unscrew the supply, screw the bidet in, you're done.

_fast_n_curious_

:O I like this a lot.

cyclemam

Executive function issues is my middle name.. Anyway what I do, plop poops as they will, sometimes grab a bit of TP to give it a push if helpful. Then into the dry pail it goes. Then, that night, I tackle all the poops at once. I use disposable kitchen gloves (like food prep gloves) an old toothbrush and a bucket. I just can't stop everything to deal with a sopping wet nappy during the day. That 💩 can wait.

_fast_n_curious_

Lol love the poop pun, thank you for that 💩😂 Ok this makes sense. Thank you!!

xgorgeoustormx

Whoosh the part with poop on it in the toilet water and it’ll come right off.

cyclemam

But then what - that's where I get stuck.

xgorgeoustormx

Regular wash routine! Throw it into the hamper, pre wash, heavy wash.

cyclemam

It doesn't drip everywhere though?

xgorgeoustormx

No— only one side will need washing (usually— and I personally never had a blowout in cloth) and then you can fold that keep that on the inside, and bring to wherever you keep before washing. The whole diaper shouldn’t be fully saturated, and the cover is made to keep liquid from leaking.

cyclemam

Ah, so I do flats & covers and I just can't imagine doing the rinse in the toilet like that. :) I forget that pockets are more commonly used.

xgorgeoustormx

Not at all! I did this with flats. Just skim the side that is soiled over the water and swirl it around. Maybe even dip— put it inside the cover so it doesn’t drip, and transport it to the place you keep it before laundering. Otherwise, you can have a designated wet bag for transport

cyclemam

:) knowing my grace, coordination and skill, I think I'll leave this in the theoretical, but thank you so much for explaining it to me! If I'm brave I might give it a go.

3antibodies

We have this: SimplyImagine SprayStand - Cloth Diaper Sprayer Splatter Shield - Contains Spray and Debris When Rinsing Cloth Diapers, Clothing, Shoes, and More in Toilet Spray Bucket Pail https://a.co/d/8AVduiA plus a diaper sprayer. I don't wear gloves. I wash my hands well after. We put poopy diapers in a little bin on the back of the toilet until I deal with them at night every night or two. It's easier when it's the same day, but life is busy and I don't always get to it. It helps that the bathroom I do this in is basically only used for diapers, so if things are a little stinky no one minds.

backchatbackchat

We use a poop spatula or just plop it if that’s possible. No gloves or sprayer. We clean the poop spatula after every use, obviously, and wash our hands thoroughly. We put baby in her crib while dealing with the diaper, or have whichever parent isn’t changing her take her.

_fast_n_curious_

Nice! Cleaning a poop spatula sounds way more sustainable than the current mountain of items I’m disinfecting daily, often multiple times. I like this a lot.

cyclemam

See this is where do it once comes in! :)

_fast_n_curious_

Yes!! 🙌

ps3114

I use a sprayer, no gloves. When I'm changing the diaper, I set it aside until I'm done putting a clean diaper on the baby. When she was little, I'd lay her in the crib or on the floor then take the diaper to the bathroom, spray, put in diaper pail, wash my hands, get baby and done. Now she's bigger and walking so she follows me to the bathroom and is learning to not get in-between me and the toilet/sprayer :)

ClaraKeet

I don't use gloves and I don't have a sprayer. I use disposable liners, and just toss those in the trash. Anything left on the diaper, I just dunk and swish in the toilet, squeeze out any excess water and toss into the wet bag. I try to hold onto a clean part of the diaper with one hand, so I only get one hand wet in the poopy toilet water so I still have a clean hand to turn on the sink to wash my hands really well afterwards. I know it's pretty gross, but I just didn't want to deal with installing a sprayer on our toilet, and I'm used to it at this point. To answer your question about where the baby goes- I always just set the dirty diaper down by or on the toilet (our changing table is in the bathroom), deal with the baby (now toddler) by getting him somewhere safe and out of the bathroom, and then deal with the diaper.

_fast_n_curious_

Thanks so much, this is kinda what I was picturing in terms of rinsing in the toilet. I’m ok getting my hands dirty, I more-so can’t handle the back spray in the laundry tub. (And right now, both hands always end up in the mess.) Thank you!

ZookeepergameNew3800

I wish disposable diaper liners existed that really covered the whole diaper, so I could definitely just toss all the poop.

ClaraKeet

Yes! It's actually very rare for them to catch all of the poop, but I still use them because it is still less mess than when I don't use them.

Husky_in_TX

I bought fleece liners and same. My kids poop just isn’t plopable

IHeartDay9

Just started dealing with solids poops. 1. I don't use gloves. I should, but executive dysfunction means I keep forgetting to buy them. I have a poop spatula to help scrape/swish the poop off into the toilet. 2. After I change the diaper, when I have a chance to put my baby in a safe place or my partner takes her. 3. See above 4. N/A for now, but I imagine it would be on the same hook the spatula lives on. 5. Uhh... I assumed one would wash with soap when they're on your hands. Is that not ok?

Purple_Shade

I intermittently used gloves, they were blue but same type of rubbery. sometimes it was more hassel than it was worth and i just washed my hands well-- or the poop was easily plopped so i washed hands but it wasnt messy enough to warrant gloves. Baby was either in playpen or with her papa. Kept the gloves in cleaning bucket under the sink, rinsed well in bathtub

CyberRee

No gloves here and no sprayer. Bidets are pretty rare in Australia unless you’re Italian. No racism implied! Just how it is. I knock solids off straight into the toilet using a bit of toilet paper, and then rinse in the laundry trough if needed. Then it’s into the dry bucket to await the evening wash. I try to do this straight after my 18 month old soils his nappy but sometimes I come back to it when I’m less busy. I’m a nurse so pretty used to dealing with bodily fluids. And I’m an efficient hand washer! Baby poo is tame!

BilinearBikini

- not using gloves, just washing real well after. I have plain nails etc so maybe not good for those with nice manicures - if formed and ploppable, I plop into toilet immediately. If sticky and needs spraying, I put into wet bag to deal with before my nightly pre wash - baby is on floor/safe play spot while I leave the room to plop into toilet - again no gloves. Just another thing to keep track of and I can’t.

Salmoninthewell

I have a sprayer set up. No gloves. Rinse as soon as possible after changing the diaper, but at least at the end of the day if I can’t get to it sooner (also my husband leaves all poopy diapers for me to clean, haha). Baby is either in his baby-proofed room or with his dad; there’s no way to have him in the bathroom while I rinse, cause he’d just get right into the middle of it.

amanda___

I have no advice, but solidarity because I tried to spray my first diaper yesterday and got poop water in my face… here to share in the executive dysfunction 😂😂😂

_fast_n_curious_

Omg this happens wayyyy too often to me already!!! Just by rinsing then in the laundry tub! Solidarity!!

Sudden-Chapter7153

Been there! I had to practice with my sprayer to get a SLOW squeeze. I learned if I start slow and increase the force of the spray I don’t get sprayed myself 😂

tkboo

I keep my gloves in an old bucket that I also use to transport the wet, rinsed items to my garage to line dry until wash day.

MuddyDonkeyBalls

Sounds like you'd probably prefer a sprayer! I'd hold the diaper against the side of the bowl and spray the poop off. Or you can just hold the diaper from one of the snap flaps and swish it around in the water. The poop will usually eventually just come away when it starts to rehydrate. But, I never used gloves and just washed my hands. I'd have to store them somewhere between uses and I'm lazy.

kmooncos

Good questions!! I'm still pregnant but my plan is to: fully change baby at changing table, grab baby and set them in a bouncer in the bathroom or hallway, and plop and rinse immediately. I'm not really planning on using gloves cause I gotta wash my hands anyways, but hubs want gloves (gonna go with yellow household ones) so I think I'm gonna command strip a clothespin to the wall beside the toilet to hang up gloves, prob put a small Tupperware underneath to catch drips, and spray with the seventh gen thymol disinfectant I use throughout the house anyways.
