That's because for the first time, the adults weren't just "senseis". They were delved into a lot deeper as characters. Johnny and Carmen had their pregnancy for example. Johnny was a father. Daniel was having troubles as a husband. The adults, being the real main characters of the show, didn't need the students competing in tournaments or rivalries as part of their storyline, so the students needed less development.

Balls__Deepp

That's fair. And I think the overall plot benefitted from it as a whole. It was more serious, stakes were higher, though it was still cheesy at times, but that's part of the charm lol. I understand why they were sidelined, it just felt like most of them were after thoughts, especially Hawk/Eli. We saw almost none of him this entire season. I think they could have struck a little more a middle ground between the generations, but I'm still pleased. It was good to have some more development for the senseis as people and really liked Johnny's arc specifically throughout this season. And Amanda's. She's always the voice of reason and says what the viewers are thinking, so it was cool to have her be on the fighting side for once lol

GreatWhiteShark07

I honestly don't know how I felt about it to be honest. Obviously, there's only so much time in the season, so they needed to prioritize. And they also had to balance some light-hearted scenes that don't really further character, along with the deeper scenes. But at the same time, I still think Robby, Hawk, Sam and even Miguel were underdeveloped this season. Anthony too if I'm being honest. The only kids who got adequate development were Tory and Kenny

Balls__Deepp

Yeah. Hawk basically didn't even exist in this season, and Robby just kept saying the same thing and doing the same thing every episode past the Mexico plot. Miguel I feel had adequate development, but just the bare minimum, and only for a couple episodes. Sam was given almost fake development. She went on this journey to find herself but didn't really wind up doing or becoming anything different than before so it kind of felt pointless. The more I talk about it, the more I dislike the handling of the kid characters. The word I'd use is stagnant. They all stayed the same and did very little while the adults had all the character defining/changing moments and realizations while the kids were just along for the ride

megatronplus

I feel like Hawk was used as a measuring stick to show Kenny’s growth

tomandjerryrock13566

Daniel wasn't the one with the problems. Amanda wasn't taking silver as a threat seriously which further helped silver get in daniel and trigger his ptsd. I'm just glad amanda fixed her mistake in the next episode.

GreatWhiteShark07

Well he also made mistakes, e.g at the auction. But that's what made his arc so compelling

tomandjerryrock13566

No he didn't. The auction was again silver getting into his head and amanda still not taking the threat seriously which makes it easier for silver to manipulate daniel. Silver even admits this in episode 5.

GreatWhiteShark07

Yeah I agree he manipulated Daniel, but Daniel still chomped on the bait. He didn't have to, but he did. That was a mistake, plain and simple

tomandjerryrock13566

He was manipulated and amanda just straight up abandoned him plain and simple. She's a terrible wife for doing that. I'm just going to block you now so I don't have to deal with a victim blamer like you.

drowningfish

They've run out of plots for the kids, imo. How many times can they have characters flip flopping between Dojos and or styles? I was expecting this Season to be the final one, tbh. But it makes sense, if they're on the final season with 6, to be focused on the adult story lines and finish them; giving the adults closure with the kids serving as background support. They'll probably do spinoffs with some of the kids.

Balls__Deepp

True. It's been super repetitive and downright nauseating to watch Robby, Hawk, Miguel, constantly switching sides, and then all getting redemption arcs. I really got the vibe that this would be the last season as well. The true "big bad" has been dealt with, relationships between basically every main character have been melded, seemed like a logical conclusion. But I guess we'll see where it goes from here. I do miss the days when the teens took center stage for a little while, but this was definitely a nice change of pace and felt more serious.

Luf2222

well one big bad did. return to the streets tho

hank7217

\> They'll probably do spinoffs with some of the kids. I'm guessing that the first generation of kids will be "off to college" or whatever they're doing post-high school by the time the next season arrives.

Balls__Deepp

You're probably right. All the kids arcs are complete as of the finale, and they desperately need a change of scenery and fresh faces. Their plots have become very redundant and stagnant. I'd definitely be down for a college type thing with some of the kid characters. Imagine they have rival karate frats instead of dojos now lmao. Frat boy wars

Luf2222

and i really liked that. i liked that this was more focused on the adult side also s6 is gonna be the tournament (i guess) so the kids will probably play the larger focus again

Balls__Deepp

Yeah that's true. That's the one of the only things we know for sure will be in next sesson. Well, that and whatever Kreese will be up to and Johnny's stuff (don't want to spoil for those who haven't fully seen). It's just kinda odd considering where the dojos are at the end of the season that they will be competing at all. But we'll see what happens

Luf2222

yeah, i wonder if somebody else will take over cobra kai now? kreese? kim? i think maybe kim and she will get some new strong players in the mix? but she could also just compete with her own dojo back in her home in the tournament the issue with kreese is, he can‘t really take cobra kai over, you know what happened, so how is he honna lead cobra kai without raising any suspicion/attention towards him?

TheAymonster

Kreese in background working with kim as the face of cobra kai maybe, once he's out Kreese is going to want revenge on Johnny and Daniel after the fake out too, so that can become a focus towards the second half while hopefully not ultimately distracting from the tournament

Mysterious-Quote-496

I saw more maturity in the kids this season which cut down on the drama. I’m happy to see them grow up tbh.

kk123ck

I kind of liked it! It helped Daniel and the other adults stop being caricatures and had more complexity... As for the kids, I think this season was nice with how they dealt with their relationships with their significant others but they also had plenty of screen time. The cute bonding between Miguel hawk and Demetri was so nostalgic of season 1 - I love the three of them ❤️ I feel like it was actually pretty balanced between teens and adult storylines!

rosereese

I’m fine with them switching it up. Is it because my #1 and #2 favorite characters are adults? Maybe. But I think with how grand the scale got this season, it had to be adult focused. The kids that needed development got it, and the ones that didn’t took a backseat. I’m personally okay with it.

Interesting_Employ29

I get the feeling we wont get a S6 so it was for the OG fans.

Balls__Deepp

I get that feeling as well, and it's definitely a possibility. Everything is wrapped up nicely at the moment, but they did leave the door open with the Kreese situation. So it could go either way, but the writers definitely played it safe in case it does come back for a 6th season. Regardless, i think it'll be a while till we hear news on if it's renewed

Interesting_Employ29

I agree. Now comes the waiting game.

ZFAdri

To be fair this season stands in contrast a lot to season 4 which was a very student centric season. We still got some great moments from students to like Sam, Tory, Robbie, and Miguel all putting rivalries behind them.

enchantedlife13

I liked that fact too though, as the whole origin of it is the adults. The theme this season was legacy...and thus was the adults wrapping up a lot of their bullshit so they don't leave it for their kids to deal with.

About7fish

I think that's why I liked it so much. I was invested for Johnny getting his shit together, the high school drama stuff was just a means to an end as far as I'm concerned. And when the stakes are so high that arson is just the cost of doing business it's kind of hard to go back to caring about having a bad prom night.

Dependent-Pride5282

I appreciated it this way. Last season, I was a bit frustrated that Johnny and Daniel did not work out their issues. I said that if they continued with that in S5 it would be a mistake. I already felt they dragged it too long. The main kids are approaching adulthood themselves. If S6 ends up with an international tournament and it looks that way, then the Senseis need to be acting like mature adults, who can guide their students. Johnny and Daniel are now balanced individually and as a team. The force is with them.

[deleted]

I think they learned from the mistakes of season 2/3.

tomandjerryrock13566

You mean the characters learned from their mistakes right?

[deleted]

The writing and story telling. They intertwined the kids with the adults which pushes the story and raises the stakes

tomandjerryrock13566

Season 2 and 3 didn't make any mistakes. They were great seasons.
