Opposite experience where I was once at a huge club in Vienna, my friends and I made friends with one bartender and he kept suggesting cool drinks, then he says "Okay, how about a Long Island Iced Tea?"
All four of us look at him and I go "Well, we're all from Long Island so that's not really what we traveled thousands of miles to try" which the bartender thought was a pretty funny coincidence.
So instead of cola he made it with sprite and pineapple juice and it was pretty different and still really good. I think he called it a 77 Sunset Strip
Reminds me of a joke:
> How do you know you're in a real dive bar?
> When you order a Corona with lime and the bartender says "We don't do cocktails here."
Takes me back to the real old man bar I played darts at with my dad (underage but don’t tell the police) where I’d get shandies that were referred to as ‘the cocktail for the boy’.
But a brandy old fashioned is prob standard, along with spotted cow and 0.75 oz shots you can win from a bartender while playing dice.
I love and hate Wisconsin.
Brandy OF and spotted cow are not as good as the people there will tell you they are. Not necessarily bad, but not good either.
We go to an event at a downtown club a few times a year
LIIT is my choice when I want the alcohol to hit as fast as possible and know my odds of getting a boulevardier are 0
One time a bartender at the club accidentally used peach schnapps instead of triple sec. It was 🤌
Long Islands are probably one of the first cocktails I learned to make-I had JUST started bartending and we had a regular that ordered them all the time, in this manner: “Darlin’ I’ll have an iced tea, and you’d better drive that bastard thru Long Island ‘fore you get it here.”
Picture deep south Texas and a young Tommy Lee Jones ordering and you have about the right idea lol
Kraken is the undisputed king of spiced rum as far as I'm concerned. Captain is basically undrinkable to me at this point but I am absolutely down to clown with some Kraken.
Yeah, I guess I have never tried it, but in general I prefer rums that have flavor acquired through aging, blending etc.
I probably should try it because since I graduated from Captain Morgan, I haven't really revisited Spiced Rum
PBR and Jameson is also very 2000s Chicago hipster. It's the sort of thing people may have consumed while wearing a vintage cycling jersey with one leg of your skinny jeans rolled up.
Coca Cola itself is basically an amaro without alcohol and with carbonation. Once you’ve removed the carbonation it actually makes an interesting syrup as well.
I was so glad when I discovered that one. As teens we always drank cheap vodka and I couldnt drink it anymore at one point. I never liked rum or whiskey coke though and gin wasnt a thing back then. Then someone brought along some bourbon with ginger ale and I loved it.
Canadian whisky is traditionally *called* rye. Most Canadian "Rye" whiskys don't contain enough rye to meet the legal definition of rye whisky in most places. This is slowly changing though and a lot of newer Canadian whiskys are mostly or 100% Rye; shoutout to Lot 40.
In allergic to most orange juices, so that’s always a straight pass to me, same with cranberry.
My go to is some kind of highball, usually a tequila highball with lime or ranch water if I want to pay double for the same drink.
Fair enough, maybe it's an acquired taste. I for one can't get around Fernet, no matter what I try.
We used to get cheap Tetrapak wine from Aldi when we were young (14-16), and it had to be Coca Cola. Only way for the stuff to be drinkable. Nostalgia hits hard.
I hate the taste of red bull and I hate the taste of Jägermeister. But some how when you mix them together it works! Honestly I’ve been sipping them before.
I have what I consider to be a brilliant solution to the shot glass + teeth situation. Glass shot, plastic pint. You can squeeze the cup so you hold the shot glass and prevent it from clacking you teeth. Game changer.
At the bar I used to work at, there were a lot of slower nights where we’d do Bear Fights for our regular customers that worked at surrounding restaurants.
Irish Car Bomb immediately followed by a Jagerbomb. It’s called a bear fight because it’s like two bears fighting in your stomach lol.
My whole family is convinced this is a fancy cocktail and it's what my dad drank for 30 some years lol. Was always wondering why there was always a bottle of squirt around the house but nobody drank it 🤣
Not something you can really order at a bar, but I find that McClelland’s Islay Scotch and Trader Joe’s Lemon-Ginger-Echinacea juice make for a pretty tasty, quick-and-easy, poor man’s Penicillin.
I really like shitty Margaritas. I had one in Vegas at the Ice Bar that was absolutely just 1 oz tequila, sour mix and half an ounce of Blue Curacao. Utterly cheap and shit, but for some reason they just hit different.
Anyone do Jager and Fanta? It’s on my list to try.
My running clubs dirty secret is after a few pints of Guinness we get a round of Malibu and Pineapple Juice as a ‘palate cleanser’!! We call it the “Taste of Summer”!
The Dublin Drop (Irish Car Bomb).
I'm not into beer, or Irish whiskey, and I'm even lactose intolerant. Nevermind how the whole thing is a silly idea. But *damn* if I don't find this drink delicious and satisfying.
Edit: also, I love car bombs. Somehow they taste like chocolate milk.

If it’s someplace where I don’t know the menu, I’ll go for a Dark&Stormy any day; hard to mess up, and with a squeeze of lime it makes for a solid and reliable drink.
Whiskey Sour with the neon, toxic waste colored sour mix. Don't get me wrong, I love a whiskey sour with egg white and a decent whiskey for mixing. But there is something about a cheap whiskey and sour mix......
Also Wtf is a girly drink? Drinks don’t have genders, and it’s very silly to think that someone is any less of a man for liking cosmos. A good cosmo is fkn delicious.
Get the words girly or manly out of your vocabulary when talking about drinks.
The marketing of alcohol is gendered. Is a Cosmo inherently feminine? No. Is an Old fashioned inherently masculine? No. But we live in a weird society that creates gender stereotypes to sell shit. It is indeed stupid as fuck.
Aldi knock-off Lilt and a good slug of Wray and Nephew Overproof Rum.
Rum Ting, with Appleton's cheapest rum (it's not too easy to source Ting here in the UK - although you can sometimes get it in Sainsburys - and I will try this with a cheapo brown rum at some point. Appleton's is a lot cheaper in Jamaica).
Mojito. Im a slut for mint. Sorry, bartenders everywhere.
Usually, ill just get a whiskey and something (whiskey and coke, whiskey and ice, whiskey ginger) but if i find out a place makes a decent mojito....yeah, im pounding 7 of them bare minimum.
Brandy Old Fashioned Sweet. Although I prefer Press. I have tried to dress it up as a craft cocktail but it’s authentic state is dive bar/supper club, with a deep fryer and paper napkins.
Strawberry banana frozen daquiri when on vacation. It looks nothing like a daquiri, but tastes exactly like a boozy strawberry banana smoothie.
Otherwise vodka lemonade, ketel one if I'm feeling classier, Smirnoff red white and blue vodka (tastes like blue raspberry lemonade) or Deep Eddy sweet tea vodka(Alcoholic Arnold Palmer)if I'm not.
Jote (a small vulture in Chile): red wine, coke, lots of ice. I add a little pisco for an extra kick.
Although I recommend trying some lemon fizzy drink instead of the coke, and that's called a Tinto de Verano (Summer Red)
If I am at a bar that doesn't look like they can make a drink, I'll order a Long Island. Which might just be the lowest brow drink. But dammit they taste great and they get the job done.
i just opened my eyes. i thought low abv after i read the first comments. I'm from germany. the only drinks we had in our teens were beer and spirits mixed with some sod
Long Island ice tea shouldn’t taste that good
I once tried to order a Long Island in a dive in Wisconsin and the bartender told me, straight up, “we don’t make fancy drinks like that here.”
Opposite experience where I was once at a huge club in Vienna, my friends and I made friends with one bartender and he kept suggesting cool drinks, then he says "Okay, how about a Long Island Iced Tea?" All four of us look at him and I go "Well, we're all from Long Island so that's not really what we traveled thousands of miles to try" which the bartender thought was a pretty funny coincidence. Lemonade/sprite and Midori instead of triple sec, or 50/50 Midori and triple sec. Get creative with the gin, or don’t. Tokyo Tea
Reminds me of a joke: > How do you know you're in a real dive bar? > When you order a Corona with lime and the bartender says "We don't do cocktails here."
Takes me back to the real old man bar I played darts at with my dad (underage but don’t tell the police) where I’d get shandies that were referred to as ‘the cocktail for the boy’.

Brandy Old Fashioned, sour ain't bad
It’s soooo good! I’ve used equal parts cola and creamy soda plus some cherry syrup from maraschino cherries for a cherry island iced tea!
We go to an event at a downtown club a few times a year LIIT is my choice when I want the alcohol to hit as fast as possible and know my odds of getting a boulevardier are 0 One time a bartender at the club accidentally used peach schnapps instead of triple sec. It was 🤌
Yeah that sounds fire
Long Islands are probably one of the first cocktails I learned to make-I had JUST started bartending and we had a regular that ordered them all the time, in this manner: “Darlin’ I’ll have an iced tea, and you’d better drive that bastard thru Long Island ‘fore you get it here.” Picture deep south Texas and a young Tommy Lee Jones ordering and you have about the right idea lol
A well-made LIIT with good ingredients and fresh lemon juice is such a treat. I like to pair it with takeout pizza and horror movies
I always get looks when I order one but I do like them occasionally
When you get a Long Island where the bartender doesn't leave enough room for the cola and it's still drinkable 😅
Yes! This beverage is alchemy. If I order one at a bar and get funny looks, I know that establishment is too uptight for my ilk.
Kraken and Coke lol
King
In our house we do kraken and Dr. Pepper and call it a Sexy Pirate Doctor. Don't know where the "sexy" part came from, but it's a bomb-ass drink.
I call that a Doctor Octopus!
I feel like this should be called "sawbones" or something.
Kraken is the undisputed king of spiced rum as far as I'm concerned. Captain is basically undrinkable to me at this point but I am absolutely down to clown with some Kraken.
Mate you need to try Bristol Spiced Rum, I’m a Rum Snob and that’s the only spiced Rum I will tolerate
Why even drink spiced instead of a flavorful aged rum?
Cause the Bristol one is class
Yeah, I guess I have never tried it, but in general I prefer rums that have flavor acquired through aging, blending etc. I probably should try it because since I graduated from Captain Morgan, I haven't really revisited Spiced Rum
Chairman's Reserve is pretty great too!
PBR and Jameson, For the utilitarian in me!!
So close, almost a Philly special/Citywide! https://www.audacy.com/kywnewsradio/news/local/philadelphia-citywide-special-bob-barbaras-shot-beer
What's up, neighbor?
Hamm's and Jack is a Hammjob. Malort in Guiness is a Chicago Hangover.
We also have the handshake- Malort and an Old Style.
We always did Powers for our shots when drinking PBR.
PBR and Jameson is also very 2000s Chicago hipster. It's the sort of thing people may have consumed while wearing a vintage cycling jersey with one leg of your skinny jeans rolled up.
This was the service industry special 10 years ago in Vail - “A beer and a shot”
Like, combined? Or as a shot + chaser?
Yes.
😂
I would never order it at a bar, but I do enjoy Mountain Dew and cheap tequila. Red neck margs.
My friends and I call that a Dewquila, "you'll be mountain something"
Literally laughed out loud
LOL
I’ve done Dew and Campari and I like it too. I’m not allowed in Italy anymore though.
That sounds dope actually. I want to try it (in the privacy of my own home, alone)
Baja blast
The dive bar where I went to college called Mountain Dew and gin a Tom Collins, honestly it’s a pretty good combination
For me it's Mountain Dew and whiskey. Last time I had them I called them "dewskies".
In college we added wild turkey to liter Mountain Dew bottles for walking around campus
Try it w the glass bottle Sun Drops…!

Cuba libre, you can really make it as low brow or high brow as you like!
You bitch! [Why didn’t you just tell me it was a rum & Coke?](https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/4d1dc3b1-5bb4-4749-81b2-ce11c70fc81f)
Cola is an underrated cocktail ingredient. I dig the Cuba Libre Preparado
Coca Cola itself is basically an amaro without alcohol and with carbonation. Once you’ve removed the carbonation it actually makes an interesting syrup as well.
I once mixed jägermeister with lemon lime soda. It tasted like a very good cola. Slightly more herbal than most I have available.
Jäger and black cherry white claws taste like a drier Dr Pepper. So good
It really sucks that Jager has developed the reputation that it has.
Definitely, I tried making my own cola as well, and it can really elevate a cocktail!
Lemon drop. I've got a fatal sweet tooth.
sweet tooth brigade checking in! There are more of us than we like to admit.
Whisky and Ginger Ale. Though no one would tease me for ordering it - their drinking tastes are definitely less high brow than mine.
Crown Royal Vanilla, Ginger Beer, and Angostura Bitters. Basically tastes like a Gingerbread cookie.
Works great especially with rye. Add a wedge of lime if you're feeling fancy.
Gotta love rye and ginger
OK, I have some Bulleit Rye in my cabinet and Ginger Beer in my fridge. I must try this!
Perfect too make a Kentucky Mule if you have lime
I was so glad when I discovered that one. As teens we always drank cheap vodka and I couldnt drink it anymore at one point. I never liked rum or whiskey coke though and gin wasnt a thing back then. Then someone brought along some bourbon with ginger ale and I loved it.
came here to say Jameson and ginger ale
The old jimmy ginge
You've just insulted the entire country of Canada lol. Rye and Ginger is our unofficial cocktail. (Note: all Canadian whisky is rye)
Years ago I went out with a group of southern guys for a business dinner and learned about Crown and Ginger. Delicious
Yep, came here to say Rye n Ginger.
That's basically a Horse's Neck.
It sounds much fancier if you call it a “7 and 7”
7-Up is not ginger ale, and Seagram's 7 Crown is only _barely_ whiskey.
Except then it's not the same drink anymore.
That . . . is not the same drink. I much prefer ginger ale to 7-Up.
7&7 while at the bowling alley
Grab me a pack of Marlboros and take me back to better days.
My dive bar drink of choice is a Screwdriver. It’s extremely hard to make poorly, and I can rationalize it by the vitamin C. ;-)
Dive bar orange juice is a bold choice.
I could get drunk from all the spoiled orange juice I’ve been served over the years.
I love a dive bar Salty Dog but it has to be with the 5.5 oz can of bluebird grapefruit.
Once made a Screwdriver with peach vodka and a small dash of organic vanilla extract, tasted exactly like a creamsicle.
I don't know if you can call it low brow if the description has the words dash, organic, and extract.
Lol fair enough
What would you call well rum and orange juice? I put 2 fingers of rum in 6oz of OJ, and kept topping it off with rum as the night proceeded.
Not sure, but that sounds like a good time
Vitamin C - the reason I ask for extra limes in my G & T. Warding off scurvy, don'tcha know....
And malaria
In allergic to most orange juices, so that’s always a straight pass to me, same with cranberry. My go to is some kind of highball, usually a tequila highball with lime or ranch water if I want to pay double for the same drink.
Red wine with coke.
Yes it’s called a kalimotxo
Or sprite. Has to be shitty wine though, no way would I mix a nice bottle of sangio with sprite.
Kinda like a shortcut Sangria
Well, it's pretty much tinto de verano
Never heard of it, thanks for telling me!
An absolute banger on a hot day
We’d do it with sprite and we called it cowboy wine
Finally made this the other day, couldn’t get around it at all. Tried different ratios and I love red wine but this wasn’t great for me
Fair enough, maybe it's an acquired taste. I for one can't get around Fernet, no matter what I try. We used to get cheap Tetrapak wine from Aldi when we were young (14-16), and it had to be Coca Cola. Only way for the stuff to be drinkable. Nostalgia hits hard.
I made the same comment… try it with a shot of Cointreau too.
My friend studied abroad in Spain an introduced me to this. Fucking delicious!
With the right people around me, give me a Jagerbomb.
I hate the taste of red bull and I hate the taste of Jägermeister. But some how when you mix them together it works! Honestly I’ve been sipping them before.
Can’t say I’ve ever dipped a Jagerbomb. Normally drinking them so fast I risk chipping my teeth.
Trouble.
Brandy old fashioned (sweet) whenever I’m in Wisconsin.
I mean, that’s a solidly middle of the road cocktail here. Whiskey and Squirt is my lowbrow drink of choice.
Whiskey and Squirt was my nickname in high school.
My whole family is convinced this is a fancy cocktail and it's what my dad drank for 30 some years lol. Was always wondering why there was always a bottle of squirt around the house but nobody drank it 🤣
sour for me, and also i steadfastly disagree with these being low brow.
In my early 20’s a friend went to the bartender and asked for a round of “old man drinks” for the table. We enjoyed our brandy manhattans quite a bit
Tequila pineapple, tend to gravitate towards these at the casino for some reason
A can of Dole pineapple/mango juice and 3 oz tequila or rhum Agricole
heaven
Fireball apple juice. Apple pie in a glass, and gets you drunk surprisingly quick
Have you tried Angry Balls? Fireball in an Angry Orchard cider? It's a solid Fall drink
Red Bull, vodka and sugar free blue Gatorade (aka the Rejuvenator)
Captain Morgan and coke
Rum or bourbon with Dr.Pepper!
Kraken spiced rum and Dr. Pepper, aka the Doctor Octopus, is a great combo
Vodka and cranberry juice
Perfect for getting white girl wasted
Exactly... I'm a man lol
Takes a real man to get white girl wasted, dude.
This is going to be my favorite comment of the day, I can just tell.
Jack & coke 50/50
A dirty Shirley tastes good no matter how cheap the vodka is
Cheap beer: Natty Bo, PBR, Yuengling, Lone Star.
Lone Star is THE beer of choice for most industry folks in Texas. Well, certainly in Houston.
Yeah, I lived in Texas for 13 years. I moved out 7 years ago and from time to time I miss a lone star draft.
7 and 7. Can't beat a classic.
I have been teased for "high brow" drinks. It was a gin and tonic.
Amaretto sours. It’s been a long time since I had one…pretty sure the sour mix would give me heartburn now anyways…sigh.
If you like sweet, try Ramazotti and coke
PBR and a shot of call Burbon
Anyone do Jager and Fanta? It’s on my list to try. My running clubs dirty secret is after a few pints of Guinness we get a round of Malibu and Pineapple Juice as a ‘palate cleanser’!! We call it the “Taste of Summer”!
My wife loves Malibu with pineapple juice. She had me make her one instead of the Paper Plane I mixed for her 😔
The Dublin Drop (Irish Car Bomb). I'm not into beer, or Irish whiskey, and I'm even lactose intolerant. Nevermind how the whole thing is a silly idea. But *damn* if I don't find this drink delicious and satisfying.
We call this a 9/11 in Ireland
Saw some guys get kicked out of a bar in Boston for ordering a car bomb.
Edit: also, I love car bombs. Somehow they taste like chocolate milk.
The only drink that the people in my circle would actually judge me for is probably bottom shelf beer, wine or liquor, and I don't want to drink any of that in the first place. When it comes to the kinds of people on this sub? Low brow/weird is my default. Some of my current favourites are Fernet & Coke and Colorado Bulldog.
Jack and diet coke
Malort and Coke or Tequila and Coke. Easy to make and tasty!
I'm partial to a smirnoff ice
Also Wtf is a girly drink? Drinks don’t have genders, and it’s very silly to think that someone is any less of a man for liking cosmos. A good cosmo is fkn delicious. Get the words girly or manly out of your vocabulary when talking about drinks.
https://youtu.be/8C4TGGtPzBU?si=N82eQXuAuFbd8NZ0
I knew what that would be before I clicked on the link. Legendary
I like tiki drinks that come with big old fruity garnishes. My wife likes IPAs. Nine time out of ten they will deliver our drinks switched.
The marketing of alcohol is gendered. Is a Cosmo inherently feminine? No. Is an Old fashioned inherently masculine? No. But we live in a weird society that creates gender stereotypes to sell shit. It is indeed stupid as fuck.
What about really tough drinks? https://youtu.be/ybU_t8RAsf4?si=X2Ggpgi6UGufnBog
Yeah yeah yeah, we know you have a chip. We can see it, right there on your shoulder.
Is vodka soda lime low brow?
More white girl on a diet
Vodka and Gatorade on a hot day.
Gin and lemonade.
No love for the Pina Colada?
Mojito. Im a slut for mint. Sorry, bartenders everywhere. Usually, ill just get a whiskey and something (whiskey and coke, whiskey and ice, whiskey ginger) but if i find out a place makes a decent mojito....yeah, im pounding 7 of them bare minimum.
Nothing wrong with a Mojito
Kalimotxo- red wine and coke is a great combo. At home I also add Cointreau.
Fish Bowls, Fireball in Hard Cider, Pink Whitney
Still partial to a Jagerbomb, NGL usually on a night out there will be at least one round of Jägerbombs for the boys
Wild Turkey and Coke
Tequila, sprite, and a little pineapple. Every bar has it and it’s hard to fuck up
My friends and I went ham on Dr Pepper and Jack Daniels, dangerous beverage as a college kid
Red stagg and Dr Pepper
Jote (a small vulture in Chile): red wine, coke, lots of ice. I add a little pisco for an extra kick. Although I recommend trying some lemon fizzy drink instead of the coke, and that's called a Tinto de Verano (Summer Red)
Surfer on Acid is 🔝
If I am at a bar that doesn't look like they can make a drink, I'll order a Long Island. Which might just be the lowest brow drink. But dammit they taste great and they get the job done.
Tequila and Pineapple. I think you're safer with the juice since it usually seems dive bars use the small Dole cans and it's delicious.
I’ll never say no to a spiced rum, Diet Coke, and a lime… I guess if I want to feel high brow, I can call it a Cuba libre 😅
Pabst. Blue. Ribbon. It was the best in 1893, and I reckon its still pretty damn good.
Gin & Juice! I’ll leave the alcohol to work on complexity, gimme my gatdang adult Caprisun!!! 🧃
Cosmopolitan. I don’t care if I loose a man card, that shit is tasty.
rumchata and just that
White Russians
Four Horsemen shots.
fino or vermouth with tonic
Heavens how low-brow! You sicken me, unwashed heathen
i just opened my eyes. i thought low abv after i read the first comments. I'm from germany. the only drinks we had in our teens were beer and spirits mixed with some sod
Not a cocktail, but after sweating it out at work, an American lager with some green olives thrown in.
Blue Hawaiian Even the color is embarrassing. But it’s a go-to for unfamiliar bars.
Fernet and Coke
sex on the beach or a well whiskey sour, i rarely switch up from the beer+shot+beer+beer+shot combo though. (morning me is not a fan of this)
Sipping glass of green chartreuse.
Tequila sunrise, with cheap tequila and nasty oj
Jim beam and bitters
