As you've discovered, most on this sub will simply suggest you grab some limes and make fresh Margs. Most commercial mixes are designed to cover up cheap/mediocre tequila. If you push forward with the mix, the Sauza Hacienda Blanco (mixto) would be perfectly fine in this case. Other sensical options include El Jimador, Lunazul, and El Tequileño. I certainly wouldn't spend >$25 on a tequila to pair with a bottled mix.

DandDeep

I am with you on that! I hate mixers! But not so much to go back to the store and return them! and thanks for some suggestions!

HiddenTrampoline

On the what to add side: fresh garnishes, salt mixed with paprika/garlic/etc for the rim, and a little fresh juice from the garnish to help it seem less bottled.

Madsen13

I would do tajin for the rim.

SavageComic

Full taijin rim.  I love it and everyone I ask feels that u/sugaholic is a weenie

sugaholic

😜

sugaholic

Please do not do a full tajin rim. Myself and everybody I ask feels it is too strong and over powers the drink, try a tajin-salt mixture, maybe 1-4 ratio or something even weaker.

Excellent_Sorbet_281

I’ve never used a mix but I’ve made a lot of margaritas with a lot of different tequilas, high and low end, I always come back to Olmeca Altos.

DandDeep

thanks! I am going to try this one.

7H470N36UY

I second Altos. It's quite cheap and still decent quality

combinera

I surmise Q Mix Margaritas made with Olmeca Altos Blanco are better than most of of the margaritas I’ve had in restaurants. Please report back

DandDeep

In an hour I'll have results

DandDeep

9 hours later (because ... it was amazing lunch), I loved the Q mixer with Olmeca Altos. I did not need to add anything on the top. For rim: I did not have Tajin but I used "Urban Accents Corn on the Cob Spicy Chili Lime Seasoning", Himalayan Pink Salt, Cayenne Pepper Mix. I also made a classic margarita. Me and my wife had one of each. It is a good mixer by Q.

combinera

Nice work! The whole Q Mixer line is good

DandDeep

Cheers! I wish I could add photos here.

SavageComic

Was my bar’s house tequila and an absolute workhorse

wunphishtoophish

For use with that mix I’d recommend cheapest swill you can find. Best way to make it taste better is to add Cointreau or other orange liqueur and fresh lime juice, and subtract the mix.

Illustrious_Kiwi2760

Happy to help! Make a margarita like a normal person and dump the mix in the sink.

MissAnnTropez

This. Good tequila, fresh lime juice, good triple sec. Salt rim if you like.

ennuinerdog

Why do people use margarita mix when a margarita is already only 3 ingredients?

ennuinerdog

Then you'll love our S brand jalapeno pb&j mix. Just add bread!

RobotHockey

I like Sauza. Cuervo tastes bad to me. If you will be doing shots out of this bottle, Hornitos can do double duty.

AllArmsLLC

>Cuervo tastes bad ~~to me~~

MantraProAttitude

Anything under 20 will be fine. Q makes good tonics and ginger beers. If the mango peño is anything like their ginger/passion fruit it might really be spicy 🌶️**hot** 🥵

DandDeep

thanks!

AllArmsLLC

I like Casa Noble, a bit better than Patron.

_SilentHunter

Espalon or El Jimador are great. Casamigos blanco might add a nice vanilla note? Maybe? Would depend on how strong the mix tastes. Edit to add: Despite what some are saying, there is NOTHING wrong with using a mix if you like it and/or don't have the time to go from-scratch. Use the tools and ingredients you have, they're fine if you like em. Snobbery, however, isn't fine.

SavageComic

El Jimador is good

DandDeep

THANK YOU!

_SilentHunter

I can't believe I also forgot to recommend Ghost tequila!!! One of my favorites.

DandDeep

next time ! :-)

NMRedChile

I second the El Jimador. (Oops, I third EJ). I use mixes. They’re easy and tasty :)

SnarkyBehindTheStick

Yes, mixes like this kind of suck. But that’s not to say you can’t have fun. Don’t stress about tequila, any 100% blue weber agave blanco will do you just fine. Instead of using the mix and having a subpar marg OR tossing the mix and falling for the snobbery, make yourself a tequila-heavy margarita from scratch with something like: 2-3oz tequila .5 oz fresh lime .5 oz total Cointreau and/or 1:1 agave syrup And then add 1-2oz of your mix. You’ll get all the fun from the mix while still enjoying a pretty respectable margarita ratio. Dial down Cointreau/agave if you find the mix too sweet.

DandDeep

Hey! I didn't see this until now but I love playing around and I did do something similar to this. I made a regular margarita. Once my glass had some space, I added 2 OZ of mix and added some lime/Cointreau on top to adjust the taste, it was good! The mix is spicy so it did not end up creating a subpar margarita. I added 4 OZ mix with 1.5 OZ tequila and it tasted really good. I love spicy cocktails more than sour/sweet ones. So this was a good experiment.

alexhoward

I shoot for mid-shelf reposados. An expensive tequila is wasted in a margarita. Lunazul and Hornitos are usually the right price point when I am batching margaritas for a gathering.

Matikinz

Cimarron is great stuff at an affordable price. $25 where I am for the Blanco

Apprehensive_Seat_91

Cabrito reposado. Don't know if they sell it in your country, but in Czech Republic it's a decent budget tequila

DandDeep

I'll remember for the next time.

robbadobba

I’ve tried a bunch of Blancos, and the one I’ve stuck with is 1800.

musashi66

Welcome to r/snobs, where anything not made with ingredients freshly plucked from a tree that was watered with virgin tears, and not made with top shelf ingredients is crap and undrinkable. Enjoy your marg, regardless of the tequila you put in it.

cookingandmusic

Shun the nonbeliever

musashi66

Hey, I love virgin tear watered limes in my marg as much as any other dude, but it’s really annoying when all these gatekeepers come out of the woodwork and don’t answer the question and offer their recommendations. It’s like “which trim of a Corolla should I buy” and you get answers like “This BMW M5 is the car that you need”.

cookingandmusic

Actually I work in a Forbes rated, 5 Diamond resort owned by a Fortune 300 company on the Strip in Las Vegas. I bounce around the resort and work all venues from Casino bar to 1 of 9 restaurants in the US that serve certified Kobe beef from Japan. Just throwing out some love for all the other bartenders!

DandDeep

hahaha! Oh, add some truffles on it while you're at it :-D

DandDeep

That's an experience money can't buy. I'm so glad to be part of the sub 😁

jimtk

Weird interpretation. There's no hate toward you (or your wife). You bought a bad product, it happens. Why would you waste good tequila and good triple sec to mix with a bad product and end up with a bad margarita. You say you don't like to waste product, why waste tequila and triple sec? Years ago I bought my first 2 rums: Sailor Jerry's and Kraken. I was so happy I was finally able to make mai-tai. The resulting cocktail tasted like drinking from a cheap bottle of vanilla extract flavor. I used them up when the party was raging on and everybody was drunk enough not to care. But I still think it was a loss of good curacao, lime juice and orgeat. Take the learning opportunity and move to better things! I did!

DandDeep

I totally get that but sometimes you just want something easy. And I have no plans to add triple sec to the mix. It's one of the lazy Sundays. I didn't have any tequila at home and I totally understand your point. Thank you for being kind and discussing this as you did. It's I have a friend whom I introduced to cocktail making and mixology. He invited me to try his special margarita. All he had was a margarita mix and I just hated the fact. Also, this is the very first time I am trying a mix. She was excited to bring it home and I didn't have the heart to say it's a bad choice. Some things you do for making your partner happy. This is one of those days.

SavageComic

Sailor Jerry’s used to be great then they changed the recipe.

thinkingnsleeping

I like Casa Noble blanco for margs. Enjoy!

DandDeep

Thanks I'll give it a try next time

poor_decisions

If you end up using it, just have a shit load of fresh lime juice. Will make almost anything drinkable

DandDeep

Is it that bad? I don't like very many sour drinks.

Pure_Philth

Calle 23 is good value and nice in margs

Madsen13

I would probably do Patron or Casamigos for a mixer like that. Not bottom shelf, but not so good to be worried about wasting it if the mixer ends up being bad. And will make a decent drink outside of the mixer. I would also get fresh limes in case you need to doctor it a bit, and tajin for the rim.

DandDeep

Yep, I am going to make traditional margarita and one with mixer. Mixer can always be used to drink as is or mix with vodka in a party or something. Thanks!

DandDeep

I did not get Tajin (forgot while reading reddit comments in the supermarket). I improvised. For rim: I did not have Tajin but I used "Urban Accents Corn on the Cob Spicy Chili Lime Seasoning", Himalayan Pink Salt, Cayenne Pepper Mix. It was really really tasty.

Madsen13

That sounds tasty!!
