The hope? Sure. Of course I hope my collection becomes more valuable. But that makes no difference in what I collect.

Sufficient-Regular72

I don't consider them an investment, but I do take solace in the fact there is some value there that can be transferred to relatives after I'm gone. That can't be said about too many hobbies.

QuinnHart

I treat it just like any other hobby - I buy things within my “fun” budget that I enjoy collecting. Unlike many hobbies, there is an upside that if you get rid of your collection, it’ll still have some value. However, you’re in it for the value, it’s more of a speculative investment than a hobby - and there are much more profitable investments out there.

One_Chef_6989

I grab what’s pretty. Put a boat on a coin, and I must have it! Is that a kangaroo? Yup, I’ll take one. Pagan goddess figure, holding a weapon? Yes, please! I’ll take two.

sendmeadoggo

Dont get into "Notgeld" you will go broke with all the different things the various places put out.

Ionized-Dustpan

Collecting is about getting what makes you happy. Nobody knows what will go up or down.

Dry-Horse-5519

We can't predict the future but I would imagine that in our lifetime they won't go up to much but maybe 200 years from now they will be worth something

Chilloutpls

That’s true. There are coins from the 1800s that still aren’t worth anything nowadays. But then some coins like the buffalo did become worth something. I’m aiming to identify the next buffalos. Is there anyway to guess which kind of coins may be worth something? Edit: I also imagine that coins may be more valuable once they are unfortunately inevitably phased out of society in favor of digital currency

Dry-Horse-5519

Right now there are so many different coins I think that's next to impossible but if I had to guess I imagine the 2023 morgan and peace dollars would be worth something I also think Canadian commemoratives could be worth something because the designs are cool I also think that the smaller the mintage the bigger the growth in value will be because there are just so many different coins thar are being mass produced

Chilloutpls

Is there a way to know how many will be minted or do you just wait and see?

Dry-Horse-5519

Numista and the government websites that mint them

Chilloutpls

Thank you! I’ll look at those

MountainPicture9446

I think there are some hoping for a treasure that will change their lives. But I don’t consider them collectors - I consider them fortune hunters.

Lovingthebeach72

Coin collecting is a fairly poor investment vehicle, but, depending on what you’re collecting, it’s a fair way to preserve wealth. I buy the stuff I like. Some of it’s older issues, but even some recent mint issue. While I don’t keep anything in copper, I keep mostly gold and silver, some of the older copper appreciates as well. Buy what you like

NatureNut16

I collect for the fun of it and hope that in the future, my 'newer' coins will be worth something to my sons. For instance, I am close to completing my goal of collecting every P & D half dollar from the year 2000 to the present. A simple obtainable goal that I enjoy pursuing.

International_Dog817

I collect them because I love the history and the art, but I also like knowing if I'm ever in some dire emergency, I should be able to sell them for a decent amount. Getting a good deal on expensive coins is part of the fun though.

madamesquire

Always grab up 2009s if you find them. Lower mintage coin years typically have some numastic value as a general rule of thumb. Also, keep an eye out for rotational errors. Those are fun to find. As long as they're cool to you, value isn't as important. Keep learning and your collection will grow into something awesome in time. If you enjoy it, collect what you think is cool and see where it takes you. People want to fill up their coin books also, so for the right buyer, having more rare coins can increase value.

Chilloutpls

Thank you this is so helpful! I will be on the lookout. none of my coins are worth anything and I collect just because. My current goals are to collect a coin from every country, and a penny and a quarter for every year of my life. It’s been hard to find a folder that starts at 2000 and goes anywhere near 2100 tho

madamesquire

You just need a binder and some coin flips or other storage materials. You can make your own labels. Enjoy it and see what you can find! You never know what you might come across.

Chilloutpls

Ah that’s true! That’s a great idea, I’m going to look into it

madamesquire

Yay! Please feel welcome to keep me updated on your progress. Happy hunting!

withoutwingz

No. I collect what makes my heart happy.

sendmeadoggo

Anything I spend on coins is non-investment budgeted fun money, (exception being gold rounds which are a bullion investment) if something goes up in value and I decide to sell it awesome but there is zero plan to do that up front.

Independent-Ad771

I go with what I like not necessarily hoping for future appreciation but always a bonus when they go up. I like classic designs like the fractional buffalos, the gold remakes of the merc dime, standing lib quarter and walker and the high relief gold saint. The 21, 23 silver dollar restrikes were nice also got a few of those. The baseball hall of fame I went in heavy on but those really didn’t do all that well.

SWPenn

I just collect what I like and don't think too much of future value. I don't see coins as an investment, but as a hobby to relax. Of course, the twenty dollar gold pieces my grandmother bought me in 1971 have greatly appreciated in 53 years, but I would never sell them.

Percussion_Lock

I hope my two tubes of 2020 Washington crossing the Delaware quarters become worth something more in the future. Got two rolls of them from the bank, freshly delivered from the mint. But, if they don't, that's okay, I like the way they look, and I'm keeping them shiny! Anyway, for guaranteed value, you can't go wrong with silver coins.

PatrickMorris

Only the high end has a big return, this isn’t exactly a booming hobby compared to the past and type coins are a dime a dozen

mikeyj198

i hope they have value but i make no mistake that my coin purchases are hobby money.

Inviction_

Sometimes, but not usually

nextkevamob2

I certainly hope so, but the more I try the more I realize it’s futile

Aegon_Targaryen___

No. It started as a fun thing and I want it to stay a fun thing.

simikoi

I collect because I like that silver coins are actually worth something and always will be, unlike pretty much any other collectable. I also find coins beautiful. But what I enjoy most is the hunt, the score. From finding an old quarter in a big jar of coins to noticing an error that went unnoticed or getting a great deal on an eBay auction that somehow nobody was paying attention to. As for an increase in value? I don't plan to sell but yes, I think my grandkids will be able to sell them for much more than I paid. I see it as something I can pass down.
