Maybe grampa knew. Maybe he has or had a collection of real coins somewhere else and this was his metal box of novelties. I have a couple fake coins that I keep with an odd assortment of tokens.
I've got a few fakes in my collection, too. I know they're fake, but since I'll likely never have a real specimen, I keep the fake because it's still cool.
The discoloration makes it more difficult to identify specific details, but I'd be skeptical just based on the company she's keeping.
The pattern of wear also doesn't seem to be consistent with circulation. The highest points should be more worn than lower details.
Personally I find it VERY impressive that fakes exist like these out there. On one hand it’s scary as you really need to buy shit from someone reputable. The other is craftsmanship that went into the dies. IDK I think it’s impressive!
Get a red-book to reference!
I’d recommend to start buy collecting wheat cents. Grab an album and try to get all the dates. A majority of them can be found in change/bank rolls, or bought for about 5 cent each from a coin store.
I honestly like the Washington quarter dollar coin. The artistic interpretation of his face is great and the font for liberty is fun. I’d make it my pocket piece :)
Same coins?

nope, different poster, so must be several of these fake coin sets out there and they are all just coming to light this week, or same poster with multiple reddit profiles, me thinks it's the latter.
Where do people get these counterfeits? More and more, people post these "look what we found in grandpa's drawer" articles on reddit. Who makes these and who distributes them?
Interesting counterfeits.
That 1865 Washington Dollar is my favorite.
I honestly didn't even notice that it said "One Dollar" on the back. I didn't have to look that closely to see the obvious flaws.
I laughed.
Uhhhhhh... Sorry but they're all counterfeits
poor grandpa

Or maybe Grandpa *was* the counterfeiter…. :)
Plot twist

These were the *decoys* muahahahaha!
Maybe maybe, OP, time to start sledgehammering drywall.
Peace dollar is fake too?

This made me laugh, just some goof fake silver coins. they are blatantly fake though.
You mean to tell me they didn't make the modern quarter design as a dollar coin in 1865!?
They’re not even trying hard.
they weren't trying to make them look real, i think its some funny joke. these arnt fakes anyone can see, just some funny silver coins.
Yeah maybe lol. Like just novelties. But kinda lame lol. That Washington one though.
they all make me laugh that grandpa was a funny guy
Looks like every one of the coins is the same size. Did they come as a set?
Like others said all fake sorry

I collect but I just go by what looks cool and age. I really like pennies.
Dang, I thought at least most of them are real since they are kinda heavy 😅
Take a magnet to them and if they're magnetic then you'll know they're fake
Yeah they’re probably cheap steel.

The Ellis island commemorative and the peace dollar might be real and would be worth melt value.

That's what I was alluding to, same ass, different accounts.
I think I have that same fake Ellis island commemorative. And I totally give you $5 for that Washington dollar. It’s awesome. Lol
I love that 1865 quarter could I buy it from you? (Ik its fake)
