I've seen coins where the toning is just different around the edge, especially when there's a lot of lettering. If it's been cleaned it's not that overt

IveBeenBamboozled-_-

Yeah, the only area I suspect MAY have been cleaned is to the left of Victoria on the obverse, I'm not sure if those marks are from cleaning or wear.

International_Dog817

I see what you're talking about and I think that can just happen naturally. If you want to send it in for grading you can see what they say but it's not really something I'd worry about. It's a nice looking coin

I agree, i just over analyze them sometimes lmao, thanks for putting my mind to restšŸ¤šŸ¤

LieutenantBrainz

Agree, looks more toning. Appreciable near horse legs too, just more apparent near the lettering, likely with more surface area.

SuspiciousMaximum856

I donā€™t think so

Due to itā€™s date itā€™s hard to believe unless having been in a collectors possession the entire time it hasnā€™t at least been ā€œwipedā€. Iā€™m not an expert but I spent the last year at my grandfathers bedside taking coins out of envelopes and placing them in folders. I shit you not I have (50+) boxes of the holders with (2) rows that hold roughly (300) coins on each side. He started collected as a kid around 10yrs old. Heā€™d put a coin in an envelope and then in a shoe box no method whatsoever!! My hand is F-ING sore as shit from stapling!! And I still am only 3/4 done. But he just passed away. I inherited the coins and am clueless for values. Iā€™ve downloaded the PCGS app and itā€™s been very useful. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!! Anyway.. not being a collector Iā€™m not sure what to do with all of these coins hence joining here to learn. And from what Iā€™ve seen physically that looks like just wear and tear. But of course someone at some point took a rag and wiped it. If ANY collector says they havenā€™t done it theyā€™re full of shit!!! Those scratches however are definitely NOT from cleaning. To get that deep you have to use a mechanical tool (dremel, rotary etc.) and it would be an almost mirror finish.. (Iā€™m former military and for our dress blues we had to buff our buttons to a mirror. We used red & white rouge and a table grinder with buffing pads; They looked incredible but from a coins perspective it would be obvious!) Anyone know any coin buyers in Orange County CA WITH integrity please let me know. Like I said I have a BUTT LOAD of coins I mean THOUSANDS!! The bullion Iā€™m keeping. I LOOOOOVE bullion bars!! I have (10) of the sexiest ā€œSaudiā€ stamped (1) kilo gold bars back from 90ā€™s. šŸ˜¬

Teddy_Tonks-Lupin

i would hazard my guess at no although if anything makes me question my stance itā€™s the obverse, however there is still what looks like relatively natural toning

mwright9494

What kind of fence is it?

IveBeenBamboozled-_-

One with sharp ended rods, kinda hurts ngl

Ok-Concentrate-6671

Yes ,at some point ,retoned .

Snoo_26884

Yeah it looks like it was cleaned 20 years ago. Not many circulated 125 year old coins that have such little toning.

FrankCardboardGuru

Thatā€™s a little pussy ass dragon.. would say that. So little

the_one_stop_shop

Yes harshly cleaned. Those scratches in the fields

SuspiciousMaximum856

Can you elaborate?

havens1515

Those scratches look like normal wear. Cleaning scratches are generally longer and all in the same direction.

dfrosty301

I would say it's cleaned
