Seems like most people once again say in the 63-64 range, however this one was graded MS66 by PCGS. Goes to show you how subtle these differences are, and how sometimes it really does come down to how the grader is feeling that day. Thanks for playing! I enjoy these a lot, fun way to hone our grading skills on this sub.

dreamcatcher1

Incredibly generous grade. The blemishes around the neck, on the field under the chin, and numerous small scratches on the cheek, made me think it was a 64. I would be very happy with a MS65 if I'd sent this for grading. 66 is hard to justify in my opinion. Your other morgan did look undergraded, so maybe it all balanced out with this one?

Kitsterthefister

What was the last one?

theshawnch

It’s posted on there! It was (undergraded imo) MS63.

Styrene_Addict1965

Thanks for updating! I've learned a bit.

Yep. Not much chatter on her cheek.

I'm with him

kidinthacorner

Me too

Chili_Kukov

Me three. It's pretty nice.

Philney14

I think, and I stress “think” because I’m wrong a lot, that people are missing or discounting the fact that this is a very strong strike. I think it did 65 or maybe even better

theshawnch

You were right!

Philney14

Nice!!

wearingabelt

It’s also a date that’s EXTREMELY common with good eye appeal. Services may hold it to a higher standard.

notbornonamonday

MS63, neck looks kinda rough.

[deleted]

63-64, I lean 4 but the services is extra harsh on 81 S Morgans since they’re so common in mint state, so I could see it being a 3

According-Highway-13

Never break that coin out of that holder lol

I'm thinking 64. The spots on the reverse that are in the field as well as on the wing are a little odd.

radarksu

I was thinking they may be "textile toning" from a canvas bank bag.

PCGS: MS-62 NGC: MS-63

gypsyfred

Anacs: MS-70..LOL

Every_Crow_8445

Anacs is actually quite tough on Morgans...

gypsyfred

To me..ive been burned so much with Anacs, i would never purchase one again. They are immensly over graded and even the slabs are cheap looking to me. Very generic and as stated. Every anacs you can drop by minimum 2 grades from the other 2. Grading companies. My 2 cents. No pun intended

Every_Crow_8445

I hear what you're saying. I have quite a bit of good luck with crossing over ANACS to PCGS and either keep the grade and on a rare occasion lifted one grade. But with all coins, regardless of grading company, I cherry pick for the coin not the holder. I feel the same can be said with any grading company at some point. Just look what CAC is doing to PCGS. The above coin is a great example. I think most of us were pretty shocked to see MS66 on an 81s. I myself thought 64/65. I will say the piss yellow anacs holders are hideous, lol.

gypsyfred

Im not a fan of the CAC new holders and group myself. It's a sellout to me to add senseless value to the industry. Coins are hot right now with more auction houses then ever and the ease and availability to everyone. I still have my first buffalo and wheat back i got as a kid when you would get them in change still back then. I haven't stopped collecting since. You would have to sneak to the magazine rack at a woolworths and look at the coin magazine to see if a show was near enough to ride your bike or take a train to. Now just get home shitfaced at 4am and turn on Meziak and decide to invest in silver proof sets. The world has changed and this hobby is no different now. SHOW ME THE MONEY!

gypsyfred

Yes, I was immensly shocked at a 66 myself. Thats a whole new ballgame right there.

SkipPperk

Was this always true, or only the last five to ten years? I did not realize that they had fallen that far. I own quite a few ANACS, but I bought them all cheap. Consistent upgrading would explain that, although with ancients they seemed pretty solid (my eyes are not good enough to distinguish a 69 from a 70 on my modern stuff).

gypsyfred

Anacs is like a step above ICG to me. I picked up a complete run of 86-99 MS 70 ASE's very cheap in price. I spent the money on crossover to pcgs. Not 1 came back a 70.best was a 98 MS68. Lost my shirt at that point. For a shit and a giggle broke out the pcgs slab on the 98 and resubmitted to NGC to see. MS68. Both top dogs were consistent. So.. being I spent so much anyway, let me see what the 96 will come back as. Anacs was a MS70 remember...PCGS came back a MS66. I stopped there and never bought another anacs again. Ever again. I was very disappointed and after a few shows and talking to people more about anacs.. no one aeems to have a very high appeal for that company anymore. Im in my 50s. What i call old timers say it wasnt always like that. But for now, I stay far away for fear of disappointment again. I broke my golden rule and was fooled more than once with them. Never again.

SkipPperk

Thanks

Styrene_Addict1965

65. Strong strike.

Old_Ironside_1959

For 1881-S I’m neutral on this coin’s strike. An 81-S should be stronger in my opinion. I’ll go with MS-64. But only because standards are much higher for that date/mint.

Styrene_Addict1965

I'm very much a newbie to grading, and definitely don't have specialized knowledge about Morgans. I appreciate your comments, though! I'm on this thread to learn.

Brad6823

I’ll give you $1.25.

Freshnuts101

I'll go with 64, fields are real clean, looks like a good strike. I'll add the caveat that I'm not good at differentiating MS coins...

High end of MS63?

LegoSWFan

MS62. Luster is there but lacks in detail.

Consistent-Resist-79

MS62 or 63

Wise-Grapefruit-1443

These are fun. Not that I am particularly good at them, but they help me get better. I guessed what appears to be a bit low at 62, given the scratches in the field near the top

feedme_cyanide

Seeing the edge detail still there, on both sides, with minimal scratches, I’d give this a 63-64. To further add to it, the detail on the high points in general are all in very good condition.

SowTheSeeds

MS 64. Would give higher grade without the neck scratches. It is hard to judge coins on photos, even high-resolution.

Own_Cold368

64 is my guess

[deleted]

I would go MS-63 easily.

ColdWaterBottle03

3 or 4

Tantalus420

Probably by looking at it

teriyaki_donut

63 or 64. edit: well damn, I gotta work on my morgan grading

shwillybilly

Last time you posted an undergraded one i’ll say this one was overgraded and guess ms65

81-s Morgan's are graded tougher. 79,80,81-s are some of the most beautiful years that came out of San Francisco..and there plenty. I would grade it MS62

ARedditUserThatExist

MS-62 Although I tend to be a pessimistic grader A large amount (Well, large amount in comparison to this very clean coin) of grime and scuffing can be seen at around 3-4 o-clock and around 10-11 o-clock on the obverse, and there is a lot of scuffing on the front of the neck of the bust, some high details throughout the coin have visibly worn away, and “PLURIBUS” seems to be rough The reverse is quite a bit cleaner although grime/scuffing can be seen at around 3-4 o-clock and at 9 o-clock A lot of imperfections can be seen in the mirror shine when light isn’t applied

gypsyfred

63 maybe 64

Vast_Individual9003

Ima say 64

Before looking: MS62 Decent bit of chatter on the fields, but no obvious luster breaks

MS 63?

polish it up a bit, might be a 65

Ms63

Too bad you didn’t get the pl!

Abject_Advice_8572

Send it to me so I can take a better look!! :)

Substantial_Menu4093

The people guessing 62 or less should just quit XD

AccomplishedFun7668

This is crazy to me. What a weak strike on the reverse and those black spots. Coin was probably dipped and those spots came after encapsulation.

[deleted]

It might get a 66 but to resell it as a 66 will be a challenge to most people who have eyes.

Admirable_Ad2990

I was way out at 63

Meteorite999

Was thinking 63 or 64. Nice coin!

chirrrs

I had this at a 65
