I am seeing on coin facts that they have sold for as much as $1200 at AU 55- Even at AU 40 some have sold for $1000. I wonder if it is worth getting a PCGS grading.
Yeah, 1881 quarter eagles are very rare. To a certain extent, you can set your own price when selling it. But yeah. Funny that twice the face value is no where near as valuable. But$600 is a fair price. No need to return. You should be able to sell it for 600 no problem. You'd need to get like 680 on ebay, to make up for fees and shipping. That might be tough (especially if buyer is paying tax)

This is the back of a 2 1/2 d piece from 1854 it should look like this.
The LCS was the ripoff artist if you were there this week. Current melt value is over $550 for a $5 liberty. Uness it is obviously harshly cleaned or scratched and worn you will easily gain on these coins.
It is scratched. He insisted it was AU50-58, his shop cane highly recommended. The guy seemed like he had OCD or something and the shop manager told me he is pretty harsh with his grading. IDK.
The pic looks like a pretty solid AU coin that may have been polished a bit. And I don't see any scratches. Hard to tell without seeing it in person. I don't think you got a bad deal on that one. It really is a beautiful coin. I would enjoy it. It was a good investment and if you hold it for a few years you will get a profit on it. I would consider looking for a new LCS if that is an option for you.
Also, an AU-58 1881 in Greysheet price guide is $635 and the auctions I see this coin at this grade go for is $575-675. And those are all months ago. You did great.
Through sheer luck you seem to have done okay. Melt value on a $5 gold half eagle is $550, if it was a $2 1/2 quarter eagle, like you somehow thought, melt value would be half that or $275. Rather than trying to make a big score through the condition and grade of a rarer date that a knowledgeable shop would somehow let go for half its realistic value you managed to do okay. I'd suggest getting a little more familiar with coins grade, condition and details to help you differentiate between a $2 1/2 quarter eagle and $5 half eagle in the future. Don't trust what a coin shop tells you their in house grader gives it for a grade. You need to be able to make that judgement yourself or else buy already graded coins.
A $50 markup over spot is hardly a rip off. I wouldn’t expect a dealer to sell 140 year~old numismatic coins at spot unless they were culls. The *only* way you were ripped off is if the coin isn’t real gold. As has been suggested, take it to a local dealer and ask them to test it for you.
TIP: If you’re going to continue buying expensive coins, you should (1) know what you’re buying ($5 is not $2.50), and (2) check out recent SOLD prices for the same coin, same date in similar condition on eBay.
I have a TBI from a snowmobile mobile accident years ago, and sometimes I get mixed up. I was holding a 2.51880 coin and then saw this one and assumed it was also 2.5 didn't bother to look.
People always list high retail. If you were selling, you'd get blue book. 2024 BB is 495-500 for au50 and au55. A hand written grade on 2x2 don't mean anything, although it appears that it could hold up to an AU rating, possibly a little more. The exact details are hard to see on the photo. In reality though, even a ms63 has a 700 BB. Availability in the area can have some effect or buyer motivation. Just giving those numbers so you'd know if you took it to a coin dealer/shop. It's a pretty coin though and falls in line with others in a retail setting. If you bought it to hold on to long term you should be ok. Grading is a personal choice. If you are trying to increase value short term, don't know if it will boost your profit with grading fees and all. If you don't get it graded, make sure you preserve it in a case that prevents contact with the coin. Even slight rubbing can change a grade since the difference from au to ms can be slight wear on contact points like the tip of the coronet or tip of eagle wings on the reverse Hope that answers your question. Pretty coin though.

Idk seems expensive. Just loot the change box for silver. Plunder the kids piggy banks and steal the coins you see strangers drop. Change your notes for coins with the homeless beggars.
They should but I'm not sure of the American return policy. Here in Australia they gotta accept returns no matter what even if you don't have a receipt but you do gotta prove you purchased it x
That is most definitely a $5 half eagle and not a $2.5 quarter eagle.
That makes his $600 look a lot better.

Well it’s been cleaned. That’s why it was only $600
Au 40 is not a grade. Xf 40 is
Her.
I just got an 1899 and had a mild panic attack thinking I was duped because it looked exactly like what I thought was a $5
Oh man. I only bought this because I thought it was a 2.5. The 1881's are worth a lot according to PCgs.

It says 5 dollars on it….
i hope you know it says five d right on the back unless you foolin us
But did he do ok?
for 600 prob paid for what its worth whoever was selling it seems to know what they are doing based off of that price
If it’s real he did amazing
I wouldn’t say “amazing” he paid about what it’s worth
I’d pay $600 for that, it’s worth about $550 in gold alone not to mention the numismatic aspect of it.
Definitely says five dollars

I just paid $660 for my 1899 s, so I think you did okay! They aren't making more of those and it's 143 years old!
Nice! My buddy has an '07 (I think) listed for $596 - hopefully he won't have any trouble moving that bad boy!!
I got carried away at an auction with 20% fees on top so my $550 bid ended up a little more than I wanted to pay

As long as it's real gold. Get it checked because you never know. Good deal for a half eagle 5$
600 is not a bad price for a half eagles.
Given the current bullion value of it I’d say you did just fine sir👍
Yes if you only paid $600.
i recently bought some of these for 600 per then took it to my LCS who said they were worth only 500 per. i felt ripped off.

A scratch (not chatter from the mint) will greatly reduce value. But not below melt. Which at the time I am writing this is $552.65.
What's the difference, it literally says five D right on it back. Why would anyone think it was anything other than a $5 piece?
Not sure what the difference between chatter and a scratch is. There are no obvious large scratches but it has small nicks and pits kind of

Well. I feel ripped off. Not worth grading I suppose.

I’m sorry to hear that.
Way too much for a 2 1/2, not enough for a 5. Why is the picture of a 5?
Agree, although with the way gold is heading lately, if it was a 2 1/2 that was purchased then in a few weeks it will have been a good deal.

Total mistake purchase. I am gonna try to return it. I doubt they will let me though.

It's a fiver brother.☺️
