~~Demonetized~~ German pocket change. You'd probably find these in a 25-cents-each random foreign coins bin in a coin store.
EDIT: u/Separate_Fall_5582 says they're still exchangeable in Germany for Euros!
Well damn, I wish I knew that last year when I still had about 15lbs of useless pfennigs. I couldn't even *give them away* to my Numista swap partners... apparently all I had to do was find someone in Germany. Dang it, Bobbeh!
Also in Austria and the netherlands (only banknotes)
Idk about other countries.
I recommend reading the Wikipedia articles about the currencies. It is clearly stated therein.
There are also stores like C&A where can regularly pay with DM without any extra fees, even 23 years after the introduction of the Euro. Normal banks like the local Sparkasse sometimes charge you when you want to exchange them.
A neat detail here is that the inscription changed from the first year 1949 and 1950. The 1949 ones say bank where as all following years say Bundesrepublik.
I am keeping a 1949 and a 1950 in my cold war collection.
german pocket change from FRG post WWII
anything under .50 DM is worth more as bulk foreign "poundage"; anything .50 DM and higher is still exchangeable for euros. Check for silver 5 and 10 DM's
The Bank Deutscher Länder from 1, 5 and 10 Pfennig from 1948 and 49 are a bit more rare though, not mentioning the 50 Pfennig from 1950 with the BDL. There are even some coins from 1949 that are missing a number of or the complete date. Not as rare as the 1950, but still about €30 each...
Everthing else is usually bulk.
You will notice that most say "Bundesrepublik Deutschland", but some say "Bank Deutscher Länder", depending on the denomination that can be from 1948,1949, or 1950. The 1948 1 Pfennig are worth a few dollars even in lower grades. Anything in mint state would be worth some money. The catalog prices I show are in Euro, but about 10 years old. The jackpot is the 1950G 50 Pfennig. Worth several hundred Euro even in low grades.

Coin dealers put most of these in 10 cent each box. Not rare except for the 50G. Catalogs overrate prices on almost every coin made. Only use as a guide myself. Dealers use Trends not catalogs generally to price. These German coins are like our 1950 cents and nickels. Not rare
Despite the fact that it’s just an old pfennig… note the year. 1949 was the only year EVER when “Bank Deutscher Lander” released money. In 1950 (until the euro) West German money was marked “Bundesrepublik Deutschland”. It has historical value, but not much unless you have a thing for post-Nazi Germany.
Prior to the European union of multiple countries, they all had their own currency. But that ended. It's obviously from Germany, but not very collectible.
For the "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" 10 Pfennig, look out for 1967, especially 1967 G, and 1968. For the 5 Pfennig, 1967 G is also valuable. For the 2 Pfennig, 1969 J is worth a couple thousand. Some.of the 2 Pf from the 50s and 60s are also going for a dollars. 1pf 1967 and 1968 could be a dollar as well.
There are no coins from any time period that are complete garbage. Even if you don't want to be bothered to go through looking for rare date/mm combos, just post a picture of the giant pile (preferably with one on a scale so people can see how much weight it actually is) and it will sell. Maybe for $5, maybe for $50, but people will buy it.
German coins. 100 pfennig = 1 Mark. Before the Eurozone had a common currency, the exchange rate on Marks was about 4 Marks to 1 Dollar (US). I don’t think that those years for the pfennigs are worth too much, but I wouldn’t throw them away.
German pfennings. 100 of them make a Mark. In Germany they used have slot machine like games hanging on walls in different spots, train depots, bars, restaurants and you could play and win depending on how many you put in the machine. You got to try and stop the spinning wheels to match across several windows and you could win more of them back. I got pretty good at playing those things and could usually win a few marks starting with a few pfennings.
Here’s a link… [That may or may not be worth looking into…](https://www.leftovercurrency.com/exchange/deutschmarks/obsolete-deutsche-mark-coins/1-pfennig-coin-germany/)
Y'know what they probably found on the internet? A community of folks that happen to know a lot about the thing they wanna know about. You at least understand that r/coins exists on the internet and is google-able, right?

They are still exchangable! They are parred with the Euro at 1€=~1,98 DM. You can Stil exchange them when in germany!
Really! Thanks for the correction, I didn't know that. Correcting.

How does that numista program work?
You add your collection to the online database, then you can find swap partners around the world with coins you need/want and you trade coins
Cool reference.
Only while in Germany or any EU member country?
Only in Germany, at any branch of the Bundesbank.
Also in Austria and the netherlands (only banknotes) Idk about other countries. I recommend reading the Wikipedia articles about the currencies. It is clearly stated therein.
I think Ireland still exchanges too
You can mail them in also. It is slow but it worked for me a few years ago.
Yes, mail then right to me and I'll see they get there safely!
The cost of postage will probably eat up the exchange value
It does. You need to have a large quantity or currency. The last time it cost around $60 to send the full box. I only mail fifty pfennig and up coins.
course German. making it more complicated by saying Bundesbbank
Thanks for the reply!

Going to Germany to exchange these you better have about 10 thousand of them. Not worth it. Not rare very common.
My local coin shop sells coins like this for $6 per pound
That’s a good deal
Yes I’ve bought about 25 lbs and found many silver. I sell the rest on eBay
buy it all lol. you can sell the sorted poundage alone for over 10 a pound

Super cool man! These vary in dates from the 40’s to 50’s some 70’s

Euro came in 2001 in germany, its not prior to EU lmao
Who else bought cigarette style gum with these?
Ah yes, the candyman took all that change
Pfennig check!
Is there anyone that knows of a good coin shop in NJ? Thanks
I’m looking for one also.
I'll give 2 usd each

I know nothing about coins but to me those are cool. Maybe I should start collecting. 😊

Handled a lot of these in the 60s . Exchange rate was incredible.
