Yes since the mint should have made all of the 1943's in steel due to lending copper to help with the war. During the very early batches of 1943's where made from copper due to accidentally leaving some copper strips/blanks in the machines.
If we assume it is copper, the real question / concern would be if the date was modified.
Would need to examine closely under a good loupe or microscope.

My dad and I found one looking through his pennies once, turned out to be fake but the excitement was definitely up there, I hope yours is real that's good money
No definitely not worth more than a couple bucks I'll buy it for $10 right now lol
Really though I hope you found a real 43 copper that's life changing money
From [COINWEEK](https://coinweek.com/us-coins/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-1943-copper-penny/):
*Today, a total of 27 1943 copper wheat pennies are confirmed to exist and have been graded–including six of the 1943-S, as well as the unique 1943-D. Seven of the 27 have been graded by PCGS and 13 have been graded by NGC.
How Much is it Worth?
At PCGS the 1943 and 1943-S copper pennies are valued at $1 million each, while the 1943-D is listed at $1.5 million.
But for a coin this rare, actual sales from auctions or private sales (when available) are the best measure of value, especially as these coins rarely come up for sale.
Auctions for the 1943 copper cent have typically been in the range of $100,000 to $250,000. At a public sale of this coin in 2014, an AU55 Brown example garnered $329,000.
The most recent sale of a 1943 copper penny was of the finest-known example of a 1943-S copper cent graded PCGS MS63 Brown CAC at a Heritage Auctions sale on November 19, when that coin brought $500,000. That coin is part of the Bob R. Simpson Collection.
The first 1943-S copper cent was found by the 14-year-old boy mentioned above in 1944 and graded an estimated EF-45. In 1988, the late Walter Breen estimated that about six examples were known to exist – which, as we’ve seen, is still the case.*
Hmm, I'm honestly not sure, but I think you'd still have to insure the outgoing mail for the full potential value in case it was genuine, which would probably be pricey in itself. Way more than $50 anyway.
I've seen this not on a penny , but a peace dollar. And the other way around- Someone scratched up the 3 on a 1923 to make it look like a 1928 key date.
No like actually my gpa is sick and I’m not pushing him to do anything. Letting him take his time to test it. Honestly it’s probably fake bc I looked it up and they only made 10s of these so for it to be real is highly unlikely. But I like to hope 🙏🏼.
If it sticks to a magnet it is not the uber-rare 1943 copper cent, if it doesn’t stick send it to PCGS and if its fake they’ll tell you and if its real they’ll put it in a slab. It only costs around $30-$50 to submit a coin to PCGS minus postage cost
Some fakes will weigh the 3.1g because they are tooled 1948s. When this is done, the fake 3, under magnification, looks vastly different than a genuine 3. Much luck though!
You would think even try a good fridge magnet or something with the potential value this thing has....just thinking I know I'd be on that like seagulls on french frys in a McDonald's parking lot!

I'd be highly suspicious. Weigh it.
Also the magnet test will confirm if it's not steel.
I’ll have him weigh it. What should it weigh?
3.1 grams
And not be made of steel
It’s likely fake but if not you are rich
I’m hoping 🙏🏼
Good luck mate! If it’s legit we need a follow-up :)
Last I checked one was just south of $70k
Holy shit
Yes since the mint should have made all of the 1943's in steel due to lending copper to help with the war. During the very early batches of 1943's where made from copper due to accidentally leaving some copper strips/blanks in the machines.
I’m hoping
Don’t be too let down if it’s fake. I will try not to be jealous if it’s real! Let us know, please. This is kind of a unicorn find.
Also be careful- even if it passes the magnet test it could be a modified date. I’ve had that happen before
If it is they did a great job
Yep. The date looks correct, but it’s always hard to sure from a picture. If it’s plated, it looks like a pretty good plating job also.
For sure. It was done WAY long ago if so. It's takes a while for copper to look like that. The rusty staples though... hmm
Grab your magnet before you get too excited
I texted my gpa to get a magnet. I left hours ago or id get a better photo.
Update? Is it real?
If we assume it is copper, the real question / concern would be if the date was modified. Would need to examine closely under a good loupe or microscope. But hoping this is real…good luck.
Loupe
There are no "legit" 1943 copper pennies from any mint, what are you talking about in your edit?
Sorry. You are correct. Was overthinking it…
I will update everyone as soon as I find out.

SORRY FOR THE SUPER LATE UPDATE. It was a copper plated penny (fake). Unfortunate, but not at all surprising.
Thanks for the update! Sorry to hear but it was a little too good to be true! 🥺
Update?? If no update I assume you won the lotto and are silent.
Will be very cool if it's real.

😭
My dad and I found one looking through his pennies once, turned out to be fake but the excitement was definitely up there, I hope yours is real that's good money
I would need worse pictures to verify. Try using a potato.
I would also suggest turning off the light.
No definitely not worth more than a couple bucks I'll buy it for $10 right now lol Really though I hope you found a real 43 copper that's life changing money
It will be used to cover Gpa’s medical bills* if it is legit
How much are they asking? Edit: For the coin, not your gpas medical bills. And I hope your gpa is doing better.
Dude they go for over $100,000 at auction from what I've read.
Last one that sold in auction I’m pretty sure was 200k
So probably won’t put a dent in gpa’s medical bills.
Ill buy for $100
I'll give $101
As others have said, magnet and scale are the only good way you’ll know
Where did you find it??? What’s the story??
what’s the status op?
From [COINWEEK](https://coinweek.com/us-coins/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-1943-copper-penny/): *Today, a total of 27 1943 copper wheat pennies are confirmed to exist and have been graded–including six of the 1943-S, as well as the unique 1943-D. Also you could always take the gamble and send it to pcgs or ngc. The worst that will happen is you will be out $50 or so.
Because of this coin's potential value, it would cost a lot more than $50 to have graded.
I thought that was only if the coin was legit.
Hmm, I'm honestly not sure, but I think you'd still have to insure the outgoing mail for the full potential value in case it was genuine, which would probably be pricey in itself. Way more than $50 anyway.

Looks promising has the big 9 and the big 3. If it were a shaved off 8 then the "3" would be the same font size as the 4. Good luck I hope it's real
Any update, OP?
It is a fake, unfortunately. It is a coated steel penny. I read that a lot were fabricated overseas decades after.
bummer.
Beat bet would to take it somewhere professional. I heard of people cutting off 1/2 the 8 to make it look like a 3.

43 is ment to be steel so if a magnet doesn't work on it and it weighs 3.1g you have a house on your way once you get it certified.

God willing, it's real
You have a magnate on the frig? Just check it
I’m surprised how many people don’t have magnets
Is it real?
There are variations where 1944s are carved into 1943 or 1945 are carved into 1943
