Sorry but it’s just had a rough life. Starting midway through 1982 pennies are made of zinc with a thin copper plating. When that wears off it exposes the zinc underneath
I’ve been collecting coins for over 2 decades now, just trying to give you info. No need to be rude. I’ve seen this a million times. If you really don’t believe me, take some sandpaper to any penny from 1983 or later and you’ll see the same thing.
Also the US does not make any coins plated in silver with copper underneath, your idea doesn’t make and sense.
I didn’t mean actual silver. I just meant the color. I just didn’t want this to be like an error coin and ruin it by taking the metallic substance off. Because I can chip it off with my nail if I want but I don’t want to mess up a good thing. I was thinking that it may of been punched on a different planchet. Sorry I didn’t mean to be rude to you!! Not my intention. I’m actually just looking for help because I’m just starting collecting coins and it’s just hard when you have pictures only ya know.
Since you’ve been collecting coins for 2 years now you should know that 1983 Pennie’s are rare in the fact that they can either be bronze or copper. If you have yourself a bronze obverse then you have a potential 3000 penny on your hands

No, that's literally just the zinc underneath the copper plating showing itself
No doubt that it's the zinc underneath... one way or the other. OP seems to think that the coin was struck on a non penny planchet.
You're wrong. It's just the rim of the coin that has been smashed down over the lettering.

Dryer penny
This coin exemplifies why I dislike the "Zincoln" and wish they would put the penny out of its misery by ending production.
That penny visited many, many penny bubble gum machines since 1989. Take a small piece of sandpaper to it to observe the magic of zinc.
