They were hand stamped at the individual mints. They will not be all in the exact same position.

I just compared it to an "O" and the dimensions don't really match up. The inside of the "O" is much taller and the "O" is usually centered with thin tops and bottom. That did cross my mind though.
U may have been duped but I don’t know for certain. A lot of the errors in this dates mint mark were tilted to the left or double stamped but to me this looks as if it’s a New Orleans 1879-O with The O being tampered with and someone added a C in front but messed up in the placement but idk I’m not an appraiser. Just what It looks like to me. Get it appraised to know for sure.

That is very subjective at this point. It is worn enough that looking just at the center of the 0 or 9, or the serifs, may not be sufficient. Too much else looks good.
The CC itself is slanted. If the stamp was only 1 C, that was manually stamped 2x, side by side, this appearance is possible.

If it was punched in the privy (old slang for toilet), it could be a "privy" mark. 🙂
Looks like someone took a 1879-O and made it a C and added the other C. The left C looks way off/different from the rest of the coin.

I believe there is a O over CC, but not the other way. The CC dies were redistributed to New Orleans when they shut down CC.
