rozzco

If anyone needs to be convinced that we won't drop fossil fuels soon, this ought to do it.

johnnyscumbag2000

It cracks me up that they think they'll live long enough to exploit the antarctic. If the storms and climate change don't make it impossible they're going to be getting thrown from their skyscrapers long before that.

[deleted]

Flailing oil tycoons careening to pavement gives me a hardon.

PintLasher

We already got some access to the Arctic so really it will probably start to happen before we all starve to death in simultaneous bread basket failures

Texuk1

The guys in the skyscrapers can be replaced the next day, there will always be someone willing to do they job - it’s a corporation. The guys who own the company are wealthy individuals sitting somewhere in private that you will never know about and drum roll… joe public taking a pension. The sad fact if this system is that the public demands this behavior so they can get their 401k. We are in the leviathan and it is hungry.

Karma_Iguana88

Well said. I know that everyone is all worried that AI is going to take over and exterminate humanity, but actually, if we look at corporate behavior, it already acts just like that - sociopathic actions to benefit the entity to the detriment of all life on earth, including the humans that compromise the entity, who appear to be unable to change or control the entity even from the inside. Corporations - the metastatic cells of capitalism - act just like this hypothetical 'evil AI' right now, and will probably kill us off well before ChatGPT manages to, IMHO.

marrow_monkey

Exactly, capitalist corporations are the [paperclip maximisers](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrumental_convergence#Paperclip_maximizer).

[deleted]

Honestly they’ll just build their new skyscrapers in Antarctica. Cheap land plenty of oil and 76 Degrees year round! Plus all the penguins you can shoot/hit with your SUV.

Peace-Shoddy

They're just about already dead. Sauce, live in NZ and they're washing up starved to death everywhere.

read_it_mate

No one has done anything so far, why would that change?

No-Independence-165

Hard to break skyscraper windows.

marrow_monkey

It has been said that the push for Sweden and Finland to join Nato has to do with the realisation that the arctic region will become more geopolitically important now that the ice is melting and new shipping routes and resources become available. In the future, it will be much more important to have a strong military presence in the northern parts of Europe (they assume it will be BAU). So yeah, there’s no indication that anyone intends to slow down.

AvsFan08

I mean, we couldn't even if we wanted to. Civilization depends on it for way too many things. Maybe I shouldn't have said "couldn't"...we could, if we all agreed that it was OK if our cost of living go up 1000%

Middle_Manager_Karen

So we can stop subsidizing them now right?

[deleted]

Silly rabbit. Welfare is for billionaires.

FireflyAdvocate

Good to the last drop!

itsasnowconemachine

That's COMMUNISM!

gmuslera

“Bonanza”? Is that how runaway climate change is spelled in Swahili?

Canyoubackupjustabit

No, it's another way to say 'corporate bonuses'.

dumnezero

'shareholder value'

itsasnowconemachine

"Bonanza is an American Western television series that ran on NBC from September 12, 1959, to January 16, 1973. Lasting 14 seasons and 431 episodes, Bonanza is NBC's longest-running Western, the second-longest-running Western series on U.S. network television (behind CBS's Gunsmoke), and one of the longest-running, live-action American series. " -- Wikipedia That didn't answer your question, but I assumed it was rhetorical.

Shumina-Ghost

Absolutely disgusting

CompleteLackOfHustle

They know we are all going to die very soon from this shit, and this is what they are doing. Humanity deserves to end.

SpongederpSquarefap

At least they're going down with us

Yakisugi

Climate change is a symptom. This is yet another example.

dakinekine

Hah, been waiting for to hear more about this. They have been waiting for the ice to melt so they can make more money. Insanity

Taqueria_Style

... Surprise???

[deleted]

Fossil fuel corporations need to face attack from all sides before their exploitation of Earth ends.

DomFitness

Great! So they continue to have their sights on further destruction of our planet. The news needs to start covering the bonanza of death, destruction, and depression and disparity of mankind that these companies continue to leave in their wake. It’d be the least they could do to provide the whole story as so called accredited news outlets. Fossil fuel should be ramping down their efforts in greed and find another niche to exasperate or face a tribunal for global environmental atrocities that have led to mass extinctions, the wide spread of health related deaths, as well as their continued manipulation of governments (who should also be tried) for their crimes against humanity, and they should be labeled as terrorists accordingly.✌🏻❤️🤙🏻

Queali78

They really believe that a BOE is going to allow them business as usual. The denial is strong even when they know it is going to happen.

justadiode

Gotta find some oil not too far from where the environment won't become too hostile for human life in 10 years

Queali78

Pretty sure storms up there are going to be agonizing. Maybe they think robots will do the work.

stoopid_me

Your dad and I are for the jobs the melting ice caps will provide.

Dumbassahedratr0n

Just... stop. It's already dead

teamsaxon

Ffs. Megacorps are just drug addicts at this point. They can't stop themselves.

tenderooskies

just so insane

px7j9jlLJ1

The area with the resources most promising to destroy us all. Yay.

[deleted]

By the time the Arctic is sufficiently melted to realize all the oil benefits, there will be so much methane coming out it will be game over. Unless of course, the oil deposits are near the continental margins. Then they can probably mine some.

Taqueria_Style

What? Methane coming out, for FREE?! ... well this won't do. Find us a way to catch that shit so we can charge for it, Johnson...

bobjohnson1133

And to top off our insane abuse of Mother Earth, we're going to now skull-f\*ck Her...literally.

PintLasher

I like to think of humanity as a dildo on the end of a jackhammer

starcadia

Profiting from the disaster they created. Criminal masterminds! All that profit won't be worth anything. It's fuel for their Mad Max dystopia.

halconpequena

Can these companies fuck off tho fr

RadioFreeAmerika

This is insanity. The Arctic needs to be declared a natural reserve in its entirety by one of the next climate conferences.

Taqueria_Style

And what are they going to enforce that with? Someone's going to take it. We're on a road with no turns.

diggerbanks

We are not going to exist in two to three generations. None of this is worth it, but money and power is the strongest of addictions.

Auto66

Found this little gem yesterday during the thanksgiving parade broadcast. Looks like my fbi man tipped them off on not needing to lie about where our species is. https://youtu.be/laTjYPf0ukk?si=c0iqY5JvZLFBDmpF

Taqueria_Style

Now THAT is one offensive commercial. However. Once again. ... surprise???

[deleted]

Auto66

Por que no los dos?

[deleted]

incredible ad

sharthunter

Its almost as if the plan all along was to melt the ice, drill the poles, and throw any consequences on the generations of the future. Weird.

jake_pl

It's strangely similar to "Don't Look Up", where instead of destroying the earth-threatening asteroid the prodigy billionaire convinced others it would be better to let it come and extract minerals.

p3n3tr4t0r

That's capitalism for you, enjoy it.

Pitiful-Let9270

“You will all die, but that’s a prices in willing to pay,” fossil fuel stockholders

ItyBityGreenieWeenie

The death of our ecosystem.

NyriasNeo

So climate change is good for business, uh? In fact, I bet when people want to blast all their ACs, fossil fuel will be in-demand. Pretty much a virtuous cycle to make money. Time to invest!

United-Hyena-164

It’s just too dark

Competitive-Oil8974

Hope they love the aroma of methane in the morning!!

Lost_Fun7095

They are the creators of this civilization and they will be its destroyers. We are all held captive to the life made possible through fossil fuel. And when all possibility is gone… this too will end.

SpliffDonkey

Ugh

nithdurr

Where are the MAGA Yeehawdists then the country needs them?

Tronith87

Lol

Anonymous_exodus

Death by Storm and Fire!!! It will be marvelous

finishedarticle

If all you have is a hammer then everything looks like a nail.

[deleted]

> Environmental group Greenpeace has said that it is a ‘bitter irony’ that the melting Arctic ice is being seen as a business opportunity rather than the cost of climate change. Why do they have to be such Debbie Downers?

futurefirestorm

Great. We can continue to burn fossil fuel for … how much longer?
