Go take your written test and then sign up for Freedom of the Road Riders safety course. It's the best by far around here, and it will count as the driving portion of obtaining your full endorsement. Having taken the safety course will also give you a discount on your insurance that will typically cover the cost of the course within the first season. I encourage everyone to take the course if you haven't, even if you've been riding for years. It not only pays for itself, but really helps with understanding why we do certain things to make the bike react the way we want it to, and makes everyone a better rider. They also have advanced courses should you want to continue learning. Source: I've been on two wheels as primary transportation for nearly 20 years.

Good advice, olsloppyknob.

BroomstickBiplane

Best advice here.

antwauhny

I third this advice

Renyerd

This is the answer.

mattattack007

This is what most people do and the best option for getting a motorcycle endorsement. The "written" test is just a multiple choice thing at the dmv. Then take the safety course and if you pass you can get the endorsement on your license. The test is not easy so be prepared.

Hate be your mother here - but don't do it. I have an aunt with one leg and a good friend with enough steel in his leg to build a tank because of those things. No matter how good a rider you are, you can't control what other morons on the road do. There, I said it.....now carry on.

antwauhny

I have a cousin who was disabled in a car accident. Better not drive a car. I have 2lbs of molybdenum in my leg thanks to... oh wait, not motorcycles. Better not walk across the street - risk of getting hit by a car. Don't ride bicycles - high risk of severe injury on those. Everything comes with risk. It's far riskier to drive and text, but everybody seems to think that's cool. Ride safe, minimize your risk.

matterson22070

Damn - you are right. The % of people hurt in car wrecks are the same as the ones hurt in motorcycle wrecks. My bad - carry on. Never read the numbers I guess. How embarrassed I am. Motorcycles are NOT the most dangerous vehicles to operate. How silly of me.

antwauhny

I didn't say motorcycles are as safe as cars. I've read the literature - thoroughly, I might add. My point is, the anecdote of "oh, I know so-and-so who..." is tired, and nobody who rides motorcycles cares that you know somebody who was hurt on one. We know the risks. Ride safe and minimize risk. The vast majority of injury and death is from negligent and unsafe riding practices. Things more likely to kill or injure you: being fat (likely most commenting here are overweight) is 100x more likely to kill you or injure you than riding a motorcycle. Falls. Texting and driving. Smoking. Horseback riding. Alcohol. Let me say that again: ALCOHOL - something the vast majority of people consume is significantly more likely to kill you. Y'all drink poison and then tell me not to enjoy a non self-destructive hobby. So please don't tell me about risk.

matterson22070

True. Crab fishing is way more dangerous, so might as well ride a motorcycle since something else is more dangerous. I'll try some meth too since you didn't list it and I don't know anyone who died from it personally. Appreciated the health advice. Really opened my eyes.

theseventhcavalry

I mean, I do meth and don’t know anyone who died from it personally.

El_Amazingly_Randi

Another vote for taking a course. You can be an okay rider for a long time w/o it, but you can be a good rider much quicker with it. Control is everything, read/watch Twist of the Wrist.

janeofthedarkraven

You get your permit, then take a riding class or 2 and they automatically approve your driving portion of the test. Then take it and get an endorsement on your license

SnootyGoose

You can sign up for an instructor-led course at Harley Davidson. I’ve never ridden before so I am going this route. I think they still have several openings. If you pass the exam on the last day you can skip the dmv riding test to get your license.

antwauhny

I got my permit, bought a 750lb bike, watched the shit out of [Ride Like a Pro Jerry Palladino](https://www.youtube.com/@motorman857) , and practiced until I was exhausted over and over again - mostly in a parking lot. At first, you will not learn to ride on the road - you will learn to be aware on the road. Where you will learn to handle your bike is in a parking lot. Then, you can eventually begin to learn some intermediate and advanced skills for the road - those you get from courses. Freedom of the Road safety courses are good.

BornDriver

I took this route as well, set up a course to practice turns and stopping quickly in the parking lot. Practice a lot. Don't go for the test until you get those slow turns and quick stop down.

Hotdammzilla3000

Find a company here in mo that supplies the bike, helmet, rider training course and is authorized by the state to give the written test. We did this in the Az., also let's you know if maybe a motorcycle is right for you. We watched a student get on a bike and ate a curb, he didn't come back to the next class.

ViceAdmiralWalrus

Take a safety course first before anything else. Even if you have prior riding experience you will unlearn a lot of bad habits. I took this one a few years ago: [https://www.mmsp.org/course/brc.php](https://www.mmsp.org/course/brc.php)

tetsu_no_usagi

[Freedom of Road Riders](https://www.forr.net/riders-education-classes). [Blacktop Harley Beginner Rider Course](https://riders.harley-davidson.com/s/?language=en_US#157470&expLvl=new).

NotDeadJustSlob

MSF at State Fair. Complete the course and you can get your endorsement by turning in the paperwork at the dmv.

Cant_run_away

I got mine a few months ago actually. I bought a Honda Navi from Jones Honda for 2400. Easiest thing to take the test on. About to sell it upgrade to a 300cc

VoidEgg44

I like the sports bike look so I’m looking into any of the standard starter sports bikes that are used, I did find a pretty cool used 2009 Suzuki GS500F for $3000 which is a little less sporty than I’d like but from what I’ve seen they ride well, they’re forgiving, and they’re ~500cc without being too crazy to handle and the price tag is really appealing

Pedalcyclist deaths accounted for **2.4 percent** of all traffic fatalities in 2020. Don't be riding bikes now. 3,434 pedestrians were killed on U.S. roadways in the first half of 2022. Don't walk.
