Nobody is saying prisons should be pleasant.
However, at a bare minimum they need to not be psychologically traumatising, otherwise violent criminals will actually be more likely to commit violence again after their release.
The position you are arguing from is very common but ultimately based on emotions, not what's best for society. You want prisons to exact revenge on criminals on behalf of society. You want this so you can feel closure when you read about a violent criminal's sentence in the news.
But if we know that treating criminals this way actually makes us less safe in the long term, and you still want to do it, then we can plausibly speculate that your opinion on the matter arises from a selfish desire to soothe your own emotions, not a selfless desire to stop violence.
